BABY OH NO
I FOUND IT OMG
can anyone help? i have a bone that was buried for months and has been macerating for another 2 days now, the water is perfectly clear but there is still dirt stuck to it, is there a bone safe way to get the dirt off? i want to make sure it’s completely clean before i whiten it
first two: these are th puppy bones we found and they’re doing really well, going to change out the water around 1pm
3rd: my rat’s bone is looking really good, going to add some hydrogen peroxide later, anyone knows a safe way to get the rest of that dirt off?
4th: looking hella good can’t wait to piece it all back together with the feathers
also it started raining and i ran so quickly outside to take the jars into a dry area oop
High contrast skull floating menacingly in the night.
my dog killed a groundhog? (nuisance animals here in the us, totally legal) and it's heart was in GREAT condition on the ground, is it weird that I preserved it in alcohol and kept it? I already collect bones and my friends are fine with that but everyone seems to draw the line at wet specimens???
Its no different than bones really. Just a bit more dangerous chemicals to watch out for. Maybe people are more put off by seeing actual flesh. Not as normalized. I’d be careful using just alcohol though, it may not preserve fully. And you have to make sure it gets in every crevice inside the heart and all the chambers. I think formalin is what people soak things in for a month and THEN transfer them to a bottle with alcohol. But idk, I’ve never done wets.
Hello!! Any tips on where to look for dead things in the Forest? For example do animals tend to die close to trees or in plains or water bodies? Do you think i could find something just before winter season? Would you say the bodies/bones and such are pretty noticeable or you have to dig around the ground or decomposing leaves? This is long i know, but I’m just so so curious! Thank you for this awesome blog too!!
Hi! Thank you for the compliment on my blog and no worries about it being too long!
In the forest you could really find them anywhere. I haven’t found much in the woods to be completely honest, just a partial rabbit skull and a few odd bones but I’ve read/researched where to find them and I’ve found a few things. I found my partial rabbit skull in a small hole underneath a tree. I hadn’t noticed it on the way in but I just happened to spot the white-ish colour against the brown tree and it just so happend to be bones. The other odd lives of bones were sticking out of the ground under leaves that we were cleaning up.
From what I’ve gathered, small animals will looks for hidden places when they are going to die and predators can also drag their meal and hide it in places like bushes. You’ll also more than likely find some sort of remains near dens but unless it is abandoned I would not recommend looking around those for obvious safety reasons.
Bigger animals will often go downhill/the path of least resistance wether being chased by a predator or just looking for a place to rest. I’m not sure about bodies of water but it is possible that something could make it’s way to water and pass there. If it’s fall you will have to kind of dig around because you will have leaves all over the place. Just be careful of ticks or anything else that may be in your area.
I wish I could help you with more but I myself haven’t really been able to go into the woods and look for things since we’ve moved and it’s already snowing here for quite a bit now. If you need more information that I couldn’t provide I’ll point you in the direction of a few good blogs who could probably help more: @blackbackedjackal @flannelfoxen @vultureculturecoyote @flesh-n-bonesss @roadkillandcrows
Also, anyone feel free to correct me or add on if I’ve missed/gotten anything wrong!
I live in the desert so I don’t have much to offer. I have seen a lot of roadkill when I went up to the forest though. Don’t have the opportunity to walk around unfortunately.
Oh I have good tips since I'm mostly a forest person!
Forest undergrowth makes spotting bones hard. Best forests to look in ar forests with less undergrowth. Like pine forests for example. If you can see the ground easily you can see bones. It also helps to search forests in early spring when the plants haven't started to regrow yet.
Also avoid "novelty" forests. Forests with high human foot traffic like nature parks and dog walking areas. There are very few animals there in the first place. Ive had my best luck in random forests beside highways. Just make sure they aren't private property.
