mills wants to be a historian, with a focus on cultural anthropology. to him, there's something magical about studying a culture that's no longer there and gathering all the clues to find out what they were like. bringing something back from the brink, preserving every bit of information, trying to get a full picture and only sometimes succeeding? it's the way he can make his mark without making it his mark.

maybe part of it is that he is technically part of a culture that's disappearing. demigods are necessarily a shrinking population with traditions that are only preserved thanks to chiron. so there's a want to study how greek demigod culture has changed from the days of yore. and a need to demonstrate how change isn't a bad thing.

thinking about hades au aeron. he's the second son of hades, but doesn't have his brother's mother. he's the second son of hades, but he's a demigod, not as divine as his siblings.

he is the son of a princess from the northlands, raised by her and her family. aeron has been a norseman his whole life. so it is a shock upon his death when hades plucked him from the line of shades, revealed himself aeron's father, & gave aeron physical form.

he has a whole new family—a decades (centuries? how old is zagreus)-older brother, a sister, a stepmother, and a father. aeron spends his time in the caves of the underworld, finding a home among the gems in their walls.

thinking about hades au rhis. growing up in the underworld, never knowing she's half mortal, thinking her parents are erebus and nyx. zagreus never knowing nyx isn't his mother. as such, they believe themselves to be half-siblings through nyx.

when zagreus finds out his heritage & confronts nyx, she comes clean to both her children. she is neither of their mothers—both of those women are mortals, though only one still lives.

while zagreus is going on his journey to discover his mother & convince her to come back, rhis is on her own journey attempting to find her mother's shade. she does eventually find rhianon iii (represented by a dark purple blob in the region of erebus)—unlike most shades, she never moved into the rest of the underworld.

the two relish in their respective journeys, but mourn the loss of each other. they have been siblings their entire immortal lives, what are they to each other now? the sibling feelings are still there... but can she still call him "brother" when he never was?
