If I could give myself in 2019 some advice about love, here's what I would say:⁣ ⁣ 1. When you were in a toxic relationship, everything else was going well. You left, and now everything is falling apart. It's an illusion, babe. Feeling unsafe makes you distort reality, repress trauma, and suppress growth. You're just dealing with everything you had to put aside in order to survive him.⁣ ⁣ 2. Self-love is hardest when no one is watching, but that's when it matters most.⁣ ⁣ 3. Missing people who hurt you is a trauma response. Don't judge yourself, but don't run back to those people either.⁣ ⁣ 4. It's not that you've been chasing the wrong people, it's that you've been chasing anyone at all. It's not that you have poor choice in partners, it's that you don't even know what a good partner could be like.⁣ ⁣ 5. Soon, you'll meet someone who's perfect for you. You'll call him a friend. You'll leave town. Something real will hit you and you won't even know it.⁣ ⁣ 6. One day, you'll know it. I wish I could tell you when and how, but that would ruin the magic. Trust me, babe. Until then, make time for your soulfire. Love your reflection. Take care of your body. Be patient. Something is coming—not on your schedule, but it's coming. Trust.⁣ ⁣ 7. When you get what you deserve, you won't feel like you deserve it. Find the parts of you that believe love has to hurt. Find them and hold them down. Heal them. Don't believe them. ⁣ ⁣ 8. When safety isn't just a story you're telling yourself in order to justify having sex with someone, all your fears will come to the surface. You have more healing to do. He will help you. Let him. You hear me? Let him in.⁣ ⁣ 9. You've always been good at opening your heart after it's been shattered, sharing after you've been robbed, and trying again after you've failed. Stay that way. Trauma will call you foolish. Fear will call you weak. But the strongest thing you can do is love. Love, babe. Not just the spiritual kind. I'm talking heart open, arms open, can't live a day without you love. It's not dirty. It's not dumb. Babe, it's the most poetic thing. The future called. It said we're not going back to normal. That place was a dump. We're not stopping until we get to the other side.⁣ ⁣ Until nobody is getting lynched in the streets.⁣ ⁣ Until nobody dismisses a lynching as a suicide.⁣ ⁣ Until nobody is being shot in bed, thrown out of a window, or suffocated under a knee.⁣ ⁣ Until nobody is being shot jogging, shot shopping, shot playing video games, shot asking for help, shot running away.⁣ ⁣ Until nobody is being told to quiet down, calm down, change their tone when they are screaming from the soul about crimes against humanity.⁣ ⁣ Until nobody has to explain to their kids why the world is going to be more dangerous for them.⁣ ⁣ Until nobody is being denied access to food, water, safety, education, or dignity.⁣ ⁣ Until nobody is being stolen, sold, raped, murdered, or forgotten after they go missing.⁣ ⁣ Until nobody is locked away in prison for small crimes that other people can perform freely on their front porches.⁣ ⁣ Until nobody ignores systemic theft by the rich while pointing their fingers at petty theft by the poor.⁣ ⁣ Until nobody is afraid to point out inequalities in resource allocation and until nobody has to point them out because they don't exist.⁣ ⁣ Until nobody wonders why they had to be born into a body that isn't worth keeping safe and until every body is worth keeping safe.⁣ ⁣ Until nobody tolerates bigotry and until prejudice becomes as taboo as public defecation.⁣ ⁣ Until nobody is immune to being held responsible for their actions.⁣ ⁣ Until nobody has to prove why they should be treated equally.⁣ ⁣ Until nobody argues with anybody who asks to be treated equally.⁣ ⁣ Until nobody is afraid to love who they love.⁣ ⁣ Until nobody values capitalism more than humanity.⁣ ⁣ Until nobody values comfort more than justice.⁣ ⁣ Until then, we're just going to keep on going forward.
