had a fucked up dream i had a book that turned out could never be read again the same as the first time because each reread the characters became incrementally more aware that the events of the book had happened before and they were “reliving” it and i reread enough times that they became self aware, figured out they were in a book, acknowledged me as the reader, and some lost their minds or had existential crises, became violent to other characters or themselves, some begged me to never stop reading or they ceased to exist and others begged me to end it all stop reading and keeping them trapped in the endless loop of torment, and the literal only way to get the book back to its first run was to hand it off to someone else to read for the first time and for some reason i physically couldn’t tell anyone about it so i’d have to just hope whoever i gave it to would only read it once and i could never open the book again to check if they were okay and back to normal because i was terrified of fucking them all up again :(

i'm glad people are finding this fun as a concept and making references to stuff that this reminds them of but i really gotta express how bad of a nightmare this was for me. i had fallen in love with the original story and characters (though on waking i couldn't tell you the details), unintentionally warped their story beyond recognition, and found myself an unwitting god that could not provide mercy for some without doling torment to others. one of the characters started offing themselves every time i started another reread. stress dream doesn't even begin to cover it

Even if you take away the concept of servants and the fight scenes and So As I Pray Unlimited Blade Works and defenseless derrieres and everything else that turned Fate/Stay Night into one of the biggest names in the otakusphere of all time, it would still have been a novel entry into Arthuriana just for what it says about people as swords.

See a ton of Western-style fantasy and science fiction likes calling people swords to make them badasses because if you're called Bob then you're just a guy with a sword, but if Bob is called "The King's Blade" suddenly Bob is a badass now, he's the shit, Bob isn't just a warrior; he's a true believer, and that means he's exceptional. Nothing more romantic than declaring yourself nothing but a tool for your master.

And then Fate/Stay Night said you cannot love someone as a weapon, and you cannot reach them without an open hand free of steel. A sword only does one thing to a heart.

there's a lot to be said about how farmers and ranchers are the vanguard of the colonial project that continues to rape and scar the world and how they think of their land as their own private fiefdom that they're able to do with whatever they want and "protect" in whichever way they see fit

like does anybody think about how europeans (specifically brits) turned their home into a wasteland by fucking the corpse of the land into a place filled almost entirely with empty lawns and tinderbox pastures and systematically exterminating all the "predators" and "vermin" who would dare step foot on their precious land and harm their precious livestock, and how exporting that mentality across the world to places that had learned their own bespoke sustainable ways to work with the land only exacerbates our own destruction? like there were forest gardens, rivers stuffed with fish, a land altered irrevocably by human hands but not by working against it, but with it. the project of dozens, hundreds of generations burnt to a crisp in just a handful. nobody shot the wolves and burned the forests to make room for a couple hundred livestock until the colonists came and did that. now the world is sliced up into a few hundred monoculture megafarms that produce inedible corn to feed to the cattle that live on whatever's left, and farmers burn the corpses of their diseased livestock to lure the last few starving wolves to justify shooting them

all that blood and ash for a kingdom of dogs.
