Draft Motion Language for Unions and Orgs Who Want to Support Overdose Prevention Ottawa
You know this already but it’s worth repeating: Overdose Prevention Ottawa is fantastic. And they need our support, so they can go on saving lives and pushing the state to actually respond to the opioid crisis. To that end, I’ve put together some sample motion language you can use to get your union or org to lend some financial and political support to this amazing, essential, community-led project. Feel free to edit as needed. Link to a Google Doc version below.
Draft Motion to Support Overdose Prevention Ottawa
Whereas there were 865 opioid-related deaths in Ontario in 2016, a 19% increase over the previous year(1),
Whereas more than 2 people die each day in Ontario due to opioid overdose(2),
Whereas more than 700 Ontario health care workers have signed a letter calling on the Provincial Government to declare a health emergency in response to the opioid crisis(3),
Whereas a supervised injection site operating out of Sandy Hill Community Health Centre has been approved for Ottawa but has not yet begun operating,
Whereas emergency overdose prevention sites in Toronto and Vancouver have been successful in both providing harm reduction services to drug consumers and pressuring provincial and federal governments to respond to the crisis(4),
Whereas the pop-up sites in Vancouver alone have reversed over 770 potentially fatal overdoses,
Whereas a group of local health care workers, nurses, harm reduction workers, and volunteers called Overdose Prevention Ottawa (OPO) have set up an emergency overdose prevention site in the City(5),
And whereas OPO has a number of ongoing operating costs, including food and water for volunteers and clients, gas for vehicles, storage for supplies, and the purchase and repair of equipment needed to operate the site,
therefore, be it resolved that Organization Name shall:
1. Make a donation of $NUMBER to Overdose Prevention Ottawa(6),
2. Prepare and send a letter of support to Mayor Jim Watson, Councillor Mathieu Fleury, Police Chief Charles Bordeleau, and Ottawa City Council(7),
3. Distribute information to members on how they can support Overdose Prevention Ottawa(8),
4. Share information about Overdose Prevention Ottawa, including our letter of support, via social media;
5. Aquire a naloxone kit to be kept in the office, and ensure staff are trained in its use.
