Nuwara Eliya

                     At the heart of the southern hill country is Nuwara-Eliya, Sri Lanka's highest town and a favorite hill station during British colonial times.The town is still touted as "little England",an illusion maintained by the presence of an 18-hole golf course, a racecourse , the Victoria park and excellent trout fishing in nearby lakes and revers.The temperature can drop to close to freezing at nights and it is common to see smoke rising from the chimneys of the many Tudor-style manors. Adding the town's atmosphere is the spectacle of its townsfolk wrapped up n winter jackets and wooly hats,carting great bundles of turnips,leeks,marrows and cabbages to and from the markets.

      Nuwara-eliya is a great base to explore the surrounding countryside and there are many walks on offer ,  including hiking around the lowers slopes of the thickly forested Mount Pidurutalagala, at 2,555m the island's highest peak.A visit to the Hakgala Botanical Garden, a short distance from Nuwara-Eliya, is also recomended.

Sri Pada (Adam's Peak) -The Sacred Mountain

              Soaring above the surrounding hills in the southwest of the hill country is Sri Pada due to the curious footprint-shaped indentation at its summit, the mountain is considered sacred to adherents of all of Sri Lanka's main faiths- Buddhist, Hindus, Muslims and Christians -and attracts many pilgrims between December and May each year. The ascent requires stamina rather than mountaineering skills and consist of over 4,800 steps to the summit. The best time to make the ascent is during the night, when the twinkling lights of the illuminated pathway appear to rise like a stairway to heaven. Tea stalls line the path and the distant tolling of the bell at the summit provides encouragement to weary climbers. Dawn at the summit is an intensely spiritual experience. Pilgrims whisper reverently to each other as the sun rises and casts a perfect triangular shadow on the clouds below, one of the island's more unusual natural phenomena.

Knuckles Mountain Range

Further east of Kandy, the Knuckles Mountain Range as UNESCO world heritage site provides intrepid travelers with the opportunity to experience Sri Lanka at its most primal. A regged area of pristine wilderness -including rare dwarf cloud forest- the Knuckles has 27 peaks over 1000m , with the highest rising nearly 2,000 m. It is also home to an exceptional array of endemic animal and plant species. Though largely uninhabited , the region contains some of the most isolated hamlets in the island, where it is still possible to witness a way of life largely untouched by modernity.

Royal City of Kandy

Nestled in lush green hills and built around a scenic lake, the Royal City of Kandy, at 500m above sea level, is the hub of any visit to the hill country . Kandy, as a UNESCO world heritage site, was the bastion of resistance to colonial rule. Even today , Kandians pride them selves on their distinctive architecture, music,dance and art. The showpiece of the city is the Dalada Maligawa or Temple of the Tooth, which host the Lord Buddha's tooth relic, an item of veneration to all Buddhist. Strolling around the lake or exploring the numerous temples that dot the hills nearby is a great way to get the feel of this historic city. Each year , in July or August, the city holds the Esala Perahera, a spectacular display of medieval pageantry replete with caparisoned elephants, whirling fire dancers ,and pulsating drummers.

          The journey from Colombo to Kandy is a treat with fine views of the scenery afforded from the road or railway. Not to be missed en-route is the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, where visitors can get up close and personal with over 60 pachyderms ,ranging from cute babies and mischievous adolescents to majestic tuskers. Just outside Kandy at Peradeniya , the Royal Botanical Garden contains a bewildering array of local and foreign species set in a tranquil site adjacent to the mighty Mahaweli Ganga, Sri Lanka's most important river.

For many centuries, traders have been drawn to the island by the allure of its spices. Numerous spice gardens to the north of Kandy allow you to see how cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, pepper, and cardamom all continue to flourish in the island's fertile soil. Golfing enthusiasts should not miss the stunning Victoria Golf Course, set on the edge of a vast reservoir 20 km east of Kandy.

Word Spice Food Festival 2011

"World spice food festival-2011" is steering up for the sixth successful year incorporating a "Global Spice Food Village" to enhance an event that will showcase the culinary expertise from around the world.

                                This year a total of 18 signature chefs flown in from various parts of the world such as , Italy, Vietnam, Egypt, USA, South Africa, Thailand, Taiwan, Germany, Pakistan, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Spain will be working out their magic reveling in their culinary skills.

                      The participating five star city hotels and 5 specialty restaurants will showcase 18 different cuisines in this veritable jamboree of unique culinary experiences ensuring that visitors to the event witness a gourmet experience like no other at a very affordable price.

                  Since 2005 the World Spice Food Festival has brought together chefs from around the world who have worked together with local Sri Lankan chefs to produce a variety of ethnic dishes using typical spices and seasoning prominent in their ethnic kitchens. This has given the Sri Lankan chefs the opportunity to understand and learn about other global cuisines , and the role that spice play in creating mouth watering specialties.
