PSA that wild elephants are extremely dangerous.

Yes they're amazing and intelligent and cute and no, they won't attack unless threatened usually, but you have no idea whether or not they see you as a threat. Elephants will see humans as an automatic threat especially in areas of high Human Elephant Conflict (HEC). This is usually when settlements border and encroach upon elephant habitats.

The "lone elephant" is especially feared. Herds are usually matriarchal and female, and coming across trios of a daughter, mother and grandmother is pretty common, (they'll usually feel safe in numbers and ignore you if you keep your distance and you leave them alone, unless the baby is very young). Which means lone elephants are usually adult males. Bull elephants go into "musth", when their testosterone levels spike up to 60 times greater than average and mating urges go into overdrive, making them a dangerous asshole to everyone including other elephants. This can also be because the temporal glands swell and give them splitting headaches, making them rampage. Even the friendliest, tamest bull is violent as hell during musth, and this is why the lone elephant is an almost mythologically terrifying figure in Asian cultures.

Asolutely don't go any nearer to a wild elephant than you can help or your guide says is safe, do nothing to draw their attention when you do encounter them, and if you do get too close and they notice you, hit the gas and pray to your gods.

Bottomline: respect wild animals, do not feed them and keep your distance. Especially when they're big enough to flip a car and can run up to 15 mph/ 25km/h*.

*Asian elephants. African elephants are much faster.
