he only means it as a joke,    the sort of wry comment he is famous for.    her reaction  —  easy to miss, sure, but colin has always had a sharp eye  —  surprises him.    what can penelope possibly be up to in her spare time that she ought to feel sheepish over?   surely it’s no different than any other lady.   embroidery …   she’s a fine hand at the piano …  and reading, penelope does read a lot …    he hasn’t enough time to contemplate just what she might want to hide when her smile washes all those concerns away, like a storm after draught.      he chuckles, staring down at her   ;   there is something horribly endearing about the way she draws him in, so serious and earnest, before spitting him back of again with a flutter of her eyes.     colin can’t help grinning back.        ❝  well, i knew that already!   it was only a matter of having it confirmed from your own lips  — ❞       don’t think about penelope featherington’s lips.           ❝  and now i’ve got you. ❞       he declares it with pride, taking a seat on the couch across from her.           ❝  i never knew spies were so interested in the london social circuit.   you must tell me, now  —  who are you obtaining information for?   who on earth could find the goings of the ton of any interest whatsoever?  ❞

she is even less calm once the grin appears , making her heart beat faster than if she were actually caught . she never tires of it , the feeling she gets when colin looks her & she can pretend that he really sees her . that he wants to . still , it’s these moments of friendship that she cherishes , keeps them close to her heart , until the next time that she is able to see him . it has become vexingly apparent that she very well might only be comfortably herself with colin & eloise - and one of them is absent most of the time .   ❛   well , i am not saying that the colonies would be very interested in that information but i am not saying that they would not be interested in what a spinster such as myself could find out . perhaps , if you are still in town , i will bring you along on a pursuit to extract vital information , if you promise that you can keep a secret . otherwise , i shall continue to have all of the fun myself . until i am caught by the crown that is . there is , quite possibly , only one way for my spy days to end and it is not exactly happy .   ❜

honestly one thing i think is so funny about colin getting so mad about pen publishing her last article after he stopped her the first time is that she’s literally just been doing whatever tf she wanted for 10 years maybe not completely with her life in public ( but still really doing whatever she wanted within her boundries ) but with her writing , her dealings with her employer , with her money all alone with no one to tell her no or stop her lmao

DEAR READER, this is how it happened . it’s was perfectly boring day , in her perfectly boring life , in her perfectly boring house & cressida cowper had made her cry . again . it’s not that it was anything new , the second she’d seen her at the modiste on the verge of tears as she was fitted for a dress she didn’t even want ( an awful yellow dress that made her look & feel decidedly unhappy ) miss cowper known that her target would be easy & she’d been right . it had been easy to get penelope alone and even easier to crush whatever confidence she’d had walking into the modiste . she’d begged , more than once , for her mama to let her wait to make her debut . maybe , if she’d debuted with eloise she’d have had a bit more confidence knowing that someone , just one person , was on her side . mrs. featherington had not agreed . absolutely refusing to cry , she’d written down every single hurtful thought she’d had . in retrospect , leaving it out where her mother & her sisters could find it had been an oversight - especially since some of those hurtful things were about them . it’s not her mother or her sisters who find it though , it’s her father’s solicitor & despite her total mortification , he’s laughing at her words . calls her smart & witty when she wasn’t even trying to be & when he offers her a job - a chance to write , a chance she’d never ever get again . a chance to do something she loved without anyone being able to stop her . somehow , she knows she’ll never get the chance again . she’s seventeen when lady whistledown starts & it simultaneously gives her all of the freedom that she does not have in her real life & puts her in a box . every ball , every luncheon , every outing she is half there and half collecting information for her column . it almost keeps her busy enough to forget that it’s all she’ll ever have . her writing . this column . not a family , as she’s supposed to . not as if she’s trying so very hard for the first few years she’s out , hopelessly in love with a man who declares he will never marry her in the middle of the street to his brothers ( she loves him after that too ) . she’s comforted in the fact that she gets to do what she loves , she gets to make her own money , even her own freedoms ( to an extent ) , and that’s more than most ladies get in a lifetime .

the be honest meme. 14. do you think rp has had a positive or negative affect on your life or you as a person? i think it’s had both ! i think if i hadn’t started rp-ing i wouldn’t have met some of the people that i am honestly the closest to today ! it’s the reason i have a lot of the people i love in my life and that can only be positive . i think it’s made me a lot more insecure tho so .... here we are lmao. 15. how has rp changed you personally? again , i think it’s more about the people i’ve met but it’s definitely given me a lot of perspective on the things i love which is weird bc i have a love/hate relationship with it.
