Just because one of your chicken eggs hatched a fire breathing dragon people think you’re evil. But you’re still just a regular farmer trying to make a living while dealing with an overprotective dragon, heroes that want to kill you and fanatics who want to worship you as the new Demon Lord.
The thing you need to know about all of this, the thing that got me into all this trouble in the first place, is that chickens will sit on anything when they get broody enough. Anything. Duck eggs, goose eggs, turkey eggs, lizard eggs, egg shaped rocks, anything. Chickens aren’t smart. If it looks vaguely like an egg, they’ll plant their feathery arses on it and wait.
I noticed that there was a bigger egg under one of the broody chickens, when I checked. Of course I noticed, it was twice the size of the others. But I have geese. I figured it was a goose egg she’d found and stolen. It was about the right size, and I didn’t take it out to check the colour because that particular chicken gets very protective of her eggs. I’ve already got a scar on one hand from trying to get eggs away from her. I didn’t want a matched set.
That was a decision I regretted the moment I went out to feed the chickens and found a little blue-and-silver dragonet’s head poking out from under a very confused-looking chicken. The poor thing kept shifting around and looking under herself in a bewildered way, like she didn’t know what to do next. This particular chicken is a good mother, and she’s raised clutches of ducks and geese without any trouble – she’s even resigned to some of her children swimming – but this was too much. She didn’t object when I carefully reached in and fished out the little dragon.
It was so tiny, then. It fitted in my hand, with its little head peeking out one side and its tail looping around my wrist. Cute, too, with its big eyes and little snout turned up towards me.
That was when I made my second mistake. I decided to feed it before releasing it. Dragons are innately wild creatures, everyone knows that. They can’t be tamed. People have tried. The eggs are abandoned as soon as they are laid, and the dragonets hatch able to hunt, so they don’t even bond with their mothers. So just feeding it a little shouldn’t have been a big deal. It should have gobbled the meat and fled as soon as I loosened my grip on it and it saw the open sky.
It didn’t. As soon as I’d fed it, it fluttered up to a sunny window ledge and went to sleep. I went about my work, figuring that it’d leave in its own time.
By noon, it was sitting on my boot, squeaking pathetically. I wondered if maybe it was confused by the farmyard – they usually hatch in mountains, if the stories are right – so I took it back to the farmhouse with me and fed it again when I ate, then took some time away from the fences I should have been mending to walk it up to the hills. I found it some nice rocks, with plenty of lizards and beetles and suitable prey for something that size. It pounced on a beetle almost as soon as I put it down, and when I left it was crunching happily.
I hadn’t walked a quarter of the way back before something hit the back of my boot. The little dragon was holding on with all four claws, and when I looked down it squeaked pathetically. If possible, its eyes got even rounder.
Listen, you don’t make it as a farmer if you just let orphaned baby animals die. We hand-raise calves and lambs and ponies, set chickens to sit on abandoned eggs, or put them under the kitchen stove or by a fireplace. You don’t make a success of farming if you don’t value every animal. A good shepherd will spend all night looking for one lost sheep. So despite what was said later, it wasn’t just sentiment that made me sigh and pick up the little thing and carry it back to the farm. I am a good farmer. I don’t let orphaned babies die just because they’re a little work.

This is WONDERFUL, and I absolutely love it. That puzzled chicken face, and the tiny dragon!

This time... ... I will never let you go
Hi! I was just curious if you have heard about the Cara art platform? I kinda stumbled upon it in a desperate google excavation when looking for websites that incorporate anti-ai measures for art, and it turns out this one does...? If I understand it correctly, they can apply Glaze automatically to your art posts, and they use an ai detection software that rejects ai generated art. It looks reeeally tempting, but I have never heard of it before, but maybe you or your followers have any experience with it...?
never heard of it, anyone else? would be interested if it's cool!
Ok, ok, okokok...
I've spent the last 24 hours checking out the Cara art platform and I've gone from "this sounds way too good to be true" to "WE FOUND THE HOLY GRAIL WHY IS NO ONE TALKING ABOUT THIS??"
To be clear; I don't want to overhype this. Because I believe it would be a huge disservice to these people who are taking the first steps to create a sanctuary for artists and art-lovers, and they're still figuring things out.
But from what I can see, there are many things I'm excited about.
Like. Here's their website: cara.app
It's got some DeviantArt nostalgia, while the interractions with posts is reminiscent of Twitter.
Then you type whatever you fancy into the search bar (I typed DnD) and BOOM!
Endless scrolling of beautiful human art~🌸
Their pinned thread on Twitter gives a simple yet VERY enticing menu of what they offer, so here are some of them:
AI-DETECTOR!
The ai detector is a nice touch for everyone in general, not just artists. I don't like how my brain is slowly being wired to check the number of fingers on every picture I see online. Having a place where you can just admire and take in gorgeous art without having to worry how it was created is sorely sought after, and I know I'm not alone in that.
GLAZE YOUR ART!
They have Glaze (a software that protects art from ai mimicry) integrated in their website so that you can chose to add it to any art you post. They will also add Nightshade into the mix, which actively poisons ai scraping. 🥰
CUSTOMIZE YOUR FEED!
A social feed that doesn't hide posts from the people you follow and where you can also CHOSE WHAT PERCENTAGE of the site's wide content you want! I can actually still get some art recommendations in my feed without losing content from the ones I follow. Yes? Why is this not a thing everywhere…???
CUSTOM CROP FOR THUMBNAILS
I can chose to focus the thumbnail on the face instead of their crotch. It's so simple. And we deserve nice things.
THEY ARE SURVIVING ON VOLUNTEERS AND COFFEE.
SUMMARIZATION
Cara's art platform gives artists: -ai image detector -Custome home feed where posts won't be hidden -Feed AND portfolio -Easy portfolio upload -Custom crop for thumbnails -1200 character limit -Post editing -Animated GIF covers -Community discussions (like in the early 2000!) -Phone app
IS THIS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE?
Almost.
First of all, they are still in beta. It seems like they launched in early 2023, so the site has only been up and running for about a year. So there are bound to be some bugs lying around if you sign up. They encourage people to join their Discord server and report any iffiness you find.
Secondly, they can't host N*S*F*W art yet. They say that they hope to be able to in the future, though (and asks for legal support in the matter).
But other than that...? I'd say, it's worth checking out.
I joined yesterday, and I'm gonna keep exploring. I'll update this post if I find anything else, good or bad.
They say that this is supposed to be a platform by artists, for artist. And by the looks of things so far, I believe them.
ur first and last recent emojis are ur gender now. mine is 🅱👨❤💋👨
this can't be true can it
Apparently yes and I cannot wrap my head around this. You're telling me most of these teens and early 20 something's dominating social media do not even have a laptop full of organized directories of favorite images? They aren't downloading and playing with creative SOFTWARE rather than stupid little "apps??" They already can't navigate what was supposed to be the new standard level of technological familiarity!?
what the fuck
oh so this is why no one pirates media anymore
As a college instructor, this is something I've found has really hurt my students in a number of ways. Like, for instance:
We tell them to look for things in the syllabus before asking us.
The syllabus+course calendar is a 20+ page info packet.
They can never find anything in it.
Why? Because they can't use control+f to search. They don't even know what that is. Every time these students try to look something up in the syllabus, they're trying to scroll through the whole thing on their phone. No wonder they can't find anything!
We've tried to get around this by creating a syllabus FAQ page in the LMS- basically a version of it with the important dates and assignments that leaves out the course policy, university policy, and other mandated material- but it's really quite jarring to see that these kids are on the same level of "can't computer" as my parents.
We tell them to look
for things in the syllabus
before asking us.
Beep boop! I look for accidental haiku posts. Sometimes I mess up.
