Making Isaac Night's Coat IRL!

Part 1: The Mock Up

If you didn't see this coming after I said I'd been studying him meticulously, you might need glasses 😬

As of this morning, I've finished the mock up for Isaac's coat! Now I'm just waiting for the fabric to arrive!

The coat will be made of brown polyester wool and fully lined with a velvet midnight blue "starry night" fabric, because his name is Isaac NIGHT! (get it?? I thought that would be a really cool detail 🥹) The stand up collar will also be lined with the starry velvet!

I used a pattern I've used once before, and I did everything from memory and calculations. The sleeves I drafted myself based on my own measurements and math. I did this because the sleeves from the trench coat pattern were insanely oversized, but I wanted to keep the pattern intact. The pattern was entirely much too bulky and large, but I managed to tailor it pretty well, I think!

The collar is pretty floppy in the photos because I have no clue where I put my interfacing 🥲 It will definitely be stiffer on the real thing. I also did welt pockets!

Overall, I know what I need to adjust now when I sew the final coat, including making the sleeves much longer.... I have a whole numbered list, haha!

I know you all care about Isaac in a much different way than I do (as I see myself as actually being him) but I hope you'll appreciate my attempt at recreating his super cool coat nonetheless 🥹

Like, did Pugsley just sit in the Hummers shed and gossip to Slurp about how his sister dated a Hyde?

Pugsley: I'm so jealous of Eugene he got mauled by a Hyde AND got put into a coma because of it!

Slurp/Issac: [zombie noises intensify from hearing the word Hyde]

Pugsley: And you know what the worst part is? My sister was dating Tyler- the Hyde, at the time! She couldn't have waited to expose him for being a serial killer until AFTER she introduced him to me?!

Pugsley: She's actually on her way to the asylum he's at to see him now. Thing said it's totally a date. I thought she would have gone sooner since she filled out a BUNCH Willow Hill paperwork a few weeks ago, and when I asked about it, she threw a hatchet at me

Pugsley: Wednesday says she hates Tyler, but Thing told me that Wednesday went to the Rave'n with him and that she wasn't even planning on going until Tyler showed up. Thing also said that Tyler brought Wednesday a black dahlia corsage. He's just as bad as my dad!

Pugsley: And right after the Rave'n is when Eugene got mauled by Tyler. Oh, and then at some point later Wednesday kidnapped Tyler and tortured him when she found out he was the Hyde that was killing people, then after that Tyler tried to kill Wednesday as the Hyde

Pugsley: Killing each other is disgustingly romantic like something our parents would do *gags* anyway, here's a mystery meat sandwich

Color + pose study I did today!

And I wanted to share a few tiny details I've noticed while studying Isaac that I especially love about him!

- He always has light in his eyes

After the spooky story about the skull tree in the first episode, you'd expect Isaac to be really cold and cruel. But the show always portrayed him as happy and cheerful, and they even made sure that in every single shot of him, there was always light reflecting in his eyes, as opposed to characters like Wednesday and the rest of the Addams Family, who typically have dull or dimly lit eyes. I think that's a super fascinating juxtaposition: the character who is actually dead has the most life in him out of everyone!

- He always wears his coat unbuttoned

I watched back every scene with Isaac in it so I could study his coat, and out of episodes 5-7, there was only one singular scene where his coat was buttoned up all the way, it was when he was using his machine on Francoise at the hospital. I have no clue why he wears it like that, but I think it's a wonderful detail. Maybe it's a wacky mad scientist thing?? Or a sensory thing??? Maybe he likes the weight of the coat but doesn't like to feel constricted by it? (Totally not projecting or anything)

Anyway, that's all I can think of right now! I shared these observations with a friend yesterday and she was shocked by how observant I am 🥹 I will absorb every tiny detail if it's the last thing I do....

You all are going to rip my heart out for this hot take, but I personally think Isaac is aroace 😐

No, I am not just projecting.... think about it.... every major character in the show has a pairing (no I am not talking about shipping, I mean which characters are usually seen together or have a canon dynamic/history), whether it's romantic (it's usually romantic) or platonic/familial. You could argue "Isaac isn't a major character," BUT even Francoise has a pairing, I mean, she has a biological son!!!!

The only person Isaac has ever truly loved in his life was his sister, he says it himself! Is this because he never had the chance to love? Or is it because he's naturally adverse to those sorts of romantic feelings? (I think it's up for interpretation!)

Those who are aroace usually put a lot more value on forming strong platonic and familial relationships. This can be seen in Isaac with his relationship with Francoise. Maybe he was somewhat sheltered growing up because of his chronic illness. But also, maybe he just was never interested in a relationship!

It really is all about deconstructing the social emphasis on romantic relationships. They're really not as important as you all think they are 🤕 (please god we need more characters who aren't interested in romance at all)

Totally Unserious Isaac Night Headcanons (+ a little analysis I guess)

I like to write one of these for all of my "new favorite characters" when they form, so here you go. Enjoy the brain slop!

Little Itty Bitty Character Analysis:

Isaac can be extremely facetious at times. Life is just a big bowl of fancy, assorted cashews, after all! He can also be rather tone deaf. His overly cheerful attitude can't usually read a room.

He likes to freak people out by acting like a zombie sometimes, even though he's fully human now. Nothing beats a priceless reaction!

He loves fashion... especially long coats. Some might call him a little conceited because he cares about his appearance a little too much, but really, he just likes to dress nice.

He's actually very insecure, and he makes up for it by overcompensating with his talents and his lighthearted attitude. His insecurity is part of why he's so dependent on others. (The other part is his chronic illness)

His chronic illness left him very lonely at school growing up, he really struggled to do the things other students could, thus the overcompensation....

He cares so much about his family and friends. He'd do anything to help them (or himself), even if it means putting other people at risk.

General Headcanons:

If Isaac had a phone, he would use a lot of cheery emoticons. Especially :3

He's neurodivergent (especially OCD)

I'm hitting him with the transgenderfication beam. Boy can manufacture his own T

The surgeons performed top surgery at the same time they put his clockwork heart in :3 (for all intents and purposes this one is a joke)

He can sew surprisingly well. Sometimes he sews his own clothes

He is incapable of doing household chores. He somehow always escapes them....

His handwriting is half cursive and extremely scribbly, but he goes back and fixes letters later on

He hates all sports and athletics (for Obvious reasons), and he can be pretty clumsy at times
