aghast at such horror

violence and cruelty

displayed right before her

eyes can't believe

the destruction they witness

cruelty, starvation

fills her with sickness

the weight of the world

substantial these days

folks carry on

they are set in their ways

don't talk about it

they'll call you political

but we have too much

and they have too little

are we not all humans,

deserving of empathy?

bombs are exploding

while you exchange pleasantries

you all ignore,

fueled by hate turned to fear

perhaps it is time to look

hard in the mirror

and try to envision

attacks from above

targeting someone

who you deeply love

how does it feel?

not well, I am guessing

frightening, disturbing

and deeply unsettling

The one, single, difference

between "us" and "them":

geographic location.

buds appear

this time of year

as it's a time of growth

they frame compassion

that is their grand plan

if you might wonder

their vocabulary

lacks sophistication

to pack lethal punches

the artists, you see

musicians and painters

reflect history

we see it all coming

words are our passion

but we'll have the last one

there's one thing I fear

our souls are too fragile

to ready for combat

or prepare for battle

here's a call to the people:

we recognize patterns

this one is fearsome

time to take action

rise up against them
