@porpomuses liked for a starter!
Black feathers make a breadcrumb trail to the 'demon' fishers have been gossiping about.
without the source, there's nothing to tether her.
Mortal air now tickles and burns at her lungs. There's a weight to her body and cloak that wasn't there before. Far from human, but like the wind vanishing from sails, there's something...less about the dishevelled figure crammed in the cave near the water.
her mast is restored, but the crack runs jagged down the middle. A clean split, she'd have taken. This feels like salt in the wound.
She hears little feet carefully crunching over pebbles and sand, and bows her head. The hat obscures.
"So. Was the story's end all you wished?"
//queued everything here, gonna throw up a plotting/starter call!
The Grinch is seen performing actual magic during Grinch Night, and I think it's the season and the gathered fear of all the Whos that feeds into this boost of power. It's not something he can often do, otherwise stealing Christmas later would've been a breeze. Unfortunately this means the more evil version of the character is the more 'powerful' one. Something something, he's willing to abuse what little 'reality-bending' powers he has that doesn't come from his machinery.
it's no accusation , but the cat deflates still ; from the tip of his tail to the droop in his hat . his grip tightens , as does the entrails of his stomach & the furrow of his brow .
he doesn't give an answer to that . he can't . ( if there's any lesson to obtain from this disgrace , it's that grief & sorrow should be given their place .)
& so the cat doesn't say anything for a time . he just stands there silently with the disheartened grinch , mind the purring .
“ ... when faith is lost & the soul weigh a ton , ” he begins after a hush . “ it helps to remember the good that was done . ”
the littlest amount , like gossamer thneedle . as thin as resolve . as strong as steel . the cat recalls that funny darkhaired lad in the brown hat & chuckles thinly .
“ that young man you met . ” he emphasizes . “ you saved his life . in more ways than one . ”
in more ways than he ever could . the grinch has his eternal gratitude for that .
"...he saved himself, honestly." But there's no real argument, there. But he can't help but feel his own feelings can't compare. Not his friend, strapped to a table, not his parents, lost to greed. The Grinch does not even remember his family, if he ever had one. Better that way, he'd thought, as he'd watched the boy fret in his friend's dormitory room, clutching the letters and journal pages like they were all that mattered.
It's only hen the Grinch comes out of his fuzzy green head a touch; to see how the jubilant feline wilts like a poor house plant, left without water.
"It's not your failing, silly old cat. I was wrong to...say something like that. If glimpsing the cosmos told anything to me, then acting upon that fancy was...meant to be."
His hand, like a glove with all it's fur and fuzz, hovers over where the cat's paw stays on his shoulder. Like he doesn't know how to return the gesture, like he's puzzled by it still being there.
"He was like me when I was young, in some respect. I thought I'd seen everything life had for me to expect. But at the end, when he'd saved the day, with his eyes all a twinkle I would almost say..."
with his dark hair crammed under that silly little hat - he could almost say, well, how about that.
"Wonderful observation," he drawls, making a show of tilting his head. With his eyes being the way they are - it wouldn't do to let his eye-roll go unnoticed. Every expression is exaggerated, to gruesome amounts.
His arms fold; when he moves, there's a kind of dull, ghostly droning. He's still unhurried, far from impressed.
And yet, he caught a whiff of it again; like a taste in the air. Plucking whenever the girl stammered.
"If you'd told me that lackwit boy would be the only reference to my visage in the modern era, I'd have laughed in your face, and turned you to ash."
All his hard work, to be erased. He'd give the KND that - their methods were delightfully brutal. What better thing to target than memory?
"And is your home still standing, girl? Or are you going to stop wasting my time and spit out the truth?"
the weather: is slightly windy
the grinch: it's a wonderful night for eyebrows.
literally everybody: oh no
so it's fun when a character changes from appearance to appearance, to the point a fandom treats them as separate characters. When I first made this blog over five years ago, I joked about it too. I did eventually smoosh the Grinch into one character, cherry-picking what I think worked, keeping mostly to the book and cartoons and leaving out what I think doesn't gel with the point of the character.
But as I've rambled before - Grinch Night is an odd one! And I've explored this side of him in some threads. This is the Grinch at his most threatening, his least silly. Not just for the audience. For context, the Grinch in other appearances is forgiven easily, welcomed by neighbours, and while he's accepted as a menace, in the end the Whos are gracious towards him. In Vs Cat in the Hat, he even lives among them, and they come together to calm him own once he goes on one of his spirals.
The two instances where this is not the case - Grinch Night and the Live Action adaptation. The Grinch terrifies people in these versions and not just as an urban myth. There are protocols, technologies, and laws about keeping him at bay. While in the live-action version we get the sense he's all bark, no bite, and the Whos are treating him unfairly to some extent, Grinch Night pulls no punches that he IS dangerous.
I wrote in his bio that the Grinch is not above physically hurting people, though lately I've been embracing his softer side. Muses can be fickle like that! But the Grinch Night incarnation is so singular in his cruelty, and his refusal to learn anything, that he's hard to reconcile with the softie the Grinch ends up becoming. So while it may not last, I'm whipping up a verse tag for this cretin. A Grinch who has yet - or may never - get that epiphany.
Made a The Santa Clause AU because why not 🤷♀️
Someone else knows about Mel. Fuck. Fuck fuck fuck-- This was all just going down the drain, now. If someone else already knew she was the human, then what was the point of Mud, and Jack, going off and telling others?
Mud was mid drag on his cigarette whenever Jack kept talking; 'one of the machine guys.' He inhaled so fast, he sucked the whole cig right down his throat and began coughing profusely. "A fuckin' VIRTUE?!"
Oh, great. JUST GREAT! They all really were fucked.
He hacked the cigarette back up and caught it between his teeth, a groan escaping him as he rubbed at the back of his bony neck. "If the virtues get their hands on her, then we're... We're all..." Dead. Everything they knew would be over.
aw, black hand, we really in it now.
Jack is poking his fingers together, feet shuffled, like a kid that's confessed to scarfing the last cookie or kickin' a ball through a window. And not a literal wash-up undead criminal letting his old bud know they were screwed.
"That's why - I thought, if we get ahead of the curve and cut all the ties, make sure they don't think we were in on it..."
Saying that out loud, it may not even matter in the end.
"And...well...if they figured it out, Mud, they'd be stormin' the Whale Belly now. Worst is, he's on the trail. S-sides...Virtues are all bark nowadays. They ain't d-done much but smack us around lately."
