Casting a spell on you that makes you happy, by the way. Your day tomorrow will be pretty good. Something nice will happen, maybe.
the generations to come will grow up using computers that resemble the touchscreens you order food at a deli from, no root access, not owned by them, only accessible via a few rigorously controlled and selected pathways allowed by the manufacturer, logging in will require a user profile with mandatory valid payment details which will be routinely used to access already extent functionality, their operations will be preempted while advertisements play, they will be taken to court if the electronic anti-tampering hardware is tripped. this will happen
they got us first with the phones, that they were eventually able to mostly lock us out of, or at least design the hardware and firmware in such a goofy fucked up incredibly secret way that there isn’t much you can do without 5 lifetimes of effort reasonably. they took root away, that has happened already, next will be the merging of your user with some network account with microsoft or whatever no longer being optional (google phones already do this), then no boot without network, then no boot without network and TLS connection with host “allowing” you to use it
windows 11 won’t boot on hardware lacking a “trusted security module” which is the fake name for a sealed chip that facilitates end-to-end DRM encryption a la HDCP, and that is when the concept of “local media” (mp3, mp4) will die, it will only come to you after payment, over the air, encrypted, or stored locally for a period of time with built in expiration a la video rental
i tell people this and it slowly happens and they’re all “i bet you’re soooooo proud of yourself for getting this right, must feel good” — it absolutely does not feel good, this was never an ego thing, they didn’t listen and when faced with reality they will won’t listen
i saw a kid writing code on his phone for a school assignment, man, what does that mean?
Prev, you're right, i reblogged this as-is, and OP isn't exploring the question of "so what do we do" (which is fine).
But i feel up to addressing that a little so I'll try. I see the same question on posts about other social ills, and honestly I think the answer is the same. Yes, revolution would be ideal.
But the term "revolution" is poorly-defined and distorted by narratives from pop culture, which both fail to understand the nature of revolutionary action and are ultimately funded by organizations that have an interest in maintaining the status quo.
"Revolution" isn't an event like an asteroid impact. It's more like an avalanche. Even an edict from a dictator is only imposed through the willing acquiescence of all their underlings.
A post like this one points out the problem, it shows us the tragedy of the moment. And then you read it and you think...huh, yeah, that does suck, I wish it were otherwise. And then maybe the next time you have a choice, you do something differently. You share the sentiment with the other people you know. Maybe they choose to do something differently.
Working with your neighborhood to organize small forms of mutual aid is the foundation for change. Opting out of digital walled gardens when you can, opting in to decentralized networks when you can is the foundation for change.
I can't stop Microsoft from trying to lock me in to their company store. The systems of global power are too big. What I can do - am doing - is to stay alert to where they're building walls. I can put sugar in the cement at the base of the wall in the place where the cameras can't see. Maybe someone else will be able to take a sledgehammer to that weak point next year. Maybe the year after that a whole crew will have sledgehammers and we can take out that part of the wall entirely.
That's still a pretty metaphorical answer to the question of "so what can we do", so let me say specifically the ways I try to resist the digital walled gardens.
Trying not to let my phone be my whole world - i have some physical notebooks where I take notes about stuff, i could switch to a physical calendar if it came down to it
For #reasons, I wanted to measure the temp and humidity at different points in my house every day for a few years. I bought *analog* gauges, not digital, and i record the values in a paper diary. This is both so I'm not dependent on something that requires a digital company to exist in five years and so I'm not dependent on batteries. It's also so i have a reason to walk into different parts of my house each day and actually view and acknowledge the changing seasonal environment, to start getting closer to my local ecology
I installed linux on one of my computers, both out of spite at Windows not allowing me to opt out of updates and also as a way to encourage myself to build my digital literacy - the laptop can dual boot into either windows or linux, if i must use windows for something, but it defaults to linux
This is probably the most pointless thing ive done, but when windows solicited my feedback on a thing, i actually sent it. I wrote out some huge paragraphs about how frustrating and paternalistic it is that they have removed my ability to manage certain features and settings. It's basically just me standing on a rock shaking my fist at the ocean, but I won't go silent into the night, as it were
There are other little things in my life. The specifics *aren't* important. My life is different from others'. But we *can* do things. Let's do things! Together!
I told my gf that I was having an episode earlier and she replied "is it the beach episode" and it shocked me so much that it grounded me immediately
in this terrifying world you continuously have the power to offer someone else a little relief . why would you withhold that. do you remember what a little relief feels like? it feels like a lot
excuse me? are you suggesting i frolic directly into someone's emotional space and assume what brings them relief, potentially causing more stress? are you encouraging people to reach past their own boundaries to help, increasing net suffering if it costs more than the other gains? surely not; that would be advocating for emotional self-harm.
this is a post about the woman who waived my late fee at the bank .
Just in case you aren't clear on how things work, overturning Roe Vs. Wade will not make abortion illegal federally. Instead, it will give states the legal right to ban abortion, if they so choose, and many red states will attempt this if overturned. But, as of right now, the evening of May 2nd, no such decision has been made, there are no official proceedings, and nothing is set in stone. Now is the time to be loud.
Another consequence of overturning Roe: charging mothers who don’t provide the absolute ‘best’ environments for their babies.
In 2019, a pregnant woman gets into an argument, and the other person shoots her in the stomach 5 times - obviously the baby is lost. The pregnant woman (who got shot) was charge with negligent homicide for ‘bringing her baby to the fight.’ It took 7 months of protest for her charges to be overturned.
Now that Roe is overturned? Can a mother be sued if she doesn’t take folic acid pills and her baby is born with spina bifida? What about the mom who doesn’t realize she was pregant until the 2nd trimester, drank in the 1st, and decides to keep the child? If her baby is born with fetal alcohol syndrome, is she charged with negligence for not keeping her body in tiptop shape, even though she didn’t know she was pregnant?
These are not hypotheticals. If a woman’s body is no longer her body, but *always* either a potential or future baby carrier, then we’re in for a whole host of crimes against pregnant people.
timeline cleanse 🥺💕
i've had several retail and food service jobs and they were all so much harder than whatever i'm doing in this office right now. it honestly feels like cheating. service industry workers should be paid $100 per hour with full benefits including the right to kill one customer per year
3500 years ago a bunch of people decided to build a tower to the sky and now I have to worry about keeping up my Duolingo streak
just pirated my ethics textbook. was this wrong of me? who’s to say. i’ll find out soon enough
What's the trope name for when someone finds out they're the Chosen One(tm) and is like "No, thank you" and goes and does something else
Refusal Of The Call is the actual trope name. Usually followed by the tropes of The Call Knows Where You Live and You Can’t Fight Fate.
The Call is Trying to Contact you about your Destiny's Extended Warranty.
