I really hate the moralistic myths surrounding the Prohibition and the motivations behind it. It is a precautionary tale on why letting Evangelical moral outrage win is bad for everyone.

I think it's also relevant that there were genuine reasons for those complaints. "Alcohol makes people violent" was big in early feminist/suffragette circles because "dude gets drunk and beats his wife" was shockingly common then, and we don't need to get started on the health issues. BUT crucially, the police/govt were a terrible way to address those problems, and led only to further suffering.

I think the fundamental problem with that argument was that it was more convenient to blame the alcohol than the man. The logic was so beyond flawed that caused great harm. Of course a deeply misogynistic society latched on to blaming alcohol (and even spicy foods) for misbehavior and things they considered immoral. Prohibition did not stop men from abusing women, it didn’t even stop them from getting drunk. Many places had no specific laws against domestic violence during Prohibition and long after Prohibition ended.

Feminists were also concerned that women and children also suffered financially because male breadwinners would either lose their jobs due to drinking, or spend the household money on alcohol. And within the legal, cultural, and economic constraints of the time, that was a valid concern! Women and children are financially dependent on, and subject to the brutal whims of, the family patriarch, so at least if you ban alcohol, he'll be forced to be a responsible head of household... so the thinking goes.

Because women and children having a right to escape abusive men, or have resources to survive above poverty without a male provider, was less attainable than banning alcohol.

Which is why today, people will say things like "We need drug testing for welfare because drug using parents will spend money on drugs instead of feeding their kids!" but consider it Absolute Crazy Talk if you say "Regardless of drug use or lack thereof, why is children's ability to eat dependent on their parents' choices in the first place? "
