After all the commotion with the CP9 Paulie helped take care of the company with Iceburg. Dumb almost-boyfriends who were both still recovering from injuries but constantly overworked themselves.

Despite what he told Zoro to tell his ex coworkers, Paulie was deeply affected by CP9's backstabbing. People he considered his family, lying for years. He didn't even know them in reality. Iceburg sure did an amazing job at comforting Paulie after the betrayal. It was likely the first step for Paulie to realize what he felt for Iceburg, except now he had a very hard time believing and being trusting so it was a work in progress.

Extra, but Iceburg loves kissing Paulie all over and leaving the blue lipstick print on him (without Paulie realizing). Also, Paulie absolutely uses those ropes for more than just his work as a shipwright.
