Writeup for Blutrippe’s secretive project!:
@blutrippe
Name: Cutter Where are they from? - The Citadel How did they become a war boy/war girl/mother? They were one of the first people taken up as a child to be a war boy, one of the first people who were not part of Joe's original war band, that joined his cult. Position - Teacher. An older war boy who can no longer fight, but still has his mind intact. He teaches tactics and lancing to the war pups. Rough description of their character - Cutter is tall and has slightly darker skin. He is missing his left arm, that side of his face (along with the eye and ear), and his left foot is gone, for which he wears a heavy prosthetic. Most of the skin on his left side is burnt and scarred, with a smooth patch where his arm had protected the skin under it. he carries a worn old machete cut from scrap metal, and a cattle prod, which he routinely uses on the pups. Cutter is a nasty piece of work, but he is surprisingly a decent teacher, albeit one who is loathe to let any pups pass and become a war boy, given the chance to go to Valhalla when he himself was denied the chance. Rough background information (childhood is most important) Cutter was a child when his parents arrived at the Citadel, just after Joe took over, but he was healthy. Strong. Therefore he was one of the first to be brought up to join the War Boys, to be exalted and join Immortan Joe's ranks. Cutter's career went amazingly: he was a full-life, powerful, strong, skilled at both fighting and driving. There were more than whispers, everybody knew he was going to be an Imperator. And then suddenly, his driver veered right when he should have veered left, and Cutter ended up in a crash. One that he survived, crippled and weakened. Even though he was eventually brought back to something like health, all his chances of being an Imperator, of ever going out on the Fury Road again, were crushed. This left him bitter and angry, and he slowly turned from a charming warrior to a vile recluse. If in a relationship with who? - Mostly too grumpy for relationships Possible cause of death - Old age or sickness, but most likely they'll one day be murdered by a war pup or a young war boy who has grown tired of Cutter's constant abuse and foul mood, and stabs him in the back one late night.

Who Lets Her Up?
It’s been repeatedly claimed that, at the end of MMFR, it’s the War Pups who pull the lever to lower the lift for Furiosa, allowing her to ascend as the (implied) new leader of the Citadel. And it makes for an appealing story: the youngest generation of a social class previously trained to make war and regard people as things, now expressing their preference for a leader who defies the rule of a patriarch and brings with her the healing power of a more egalitarian society.
But that’s not the whole story.
The War Pups, cute as they are, are not the leaders of this internal revolutionary action. The War Pups are not the first to push the lever that makes the lift descend.
Here’s the platform, with the lever in question, before the lift is lowered:
I’ve circled in red one of the treadmill workers, because he is important. This shot is VERY short, so it’s easy to miss, but this guy is moving. By his stance and movement it’s clear that he’s sneaking out from the treadmill, likely disobeying orders by leaving his post.
After this there are a few quick shots of everyone–Corpus on another platform, Max & Furiosa on the Gigahorse, the lift control guy–looking around, waiting to see what’s going to happen. When the camera jumps back to the lift platform, we see this:
The treadmill worker has now grasped the lever and begins to push it forward, before the Pups reach the lever. It’s very, VERY hard to tell at regular speed, but slow it down and you can see the worker begin to push the lever down. Go ahead and take a look, I’ll wait.
Then, the Pups reach the lever and begin assisting, but this guy is still pushing.
Who lets her up? The invisible Wretched.
I only noticed this on my seventh theater screening of the film, because it’s very, very hard to notice. But I think that speaks to the way in which the Wretched are almost entirely invisible to the audience throughout the film, even when they’re on screen.
I’m sure there’s a critical Marxist commentary to be made here about the underclass being invisible in any revolution, and I hope someone will take on that challenge. For now, though, I hope we can begin to acknowledge that while the Pups are an important part of Furiosa’s takeover, they were not the only, nor even the first, to act.
This is like the perfect image of revolution, though: a starving worker and a bunch of kids literally taking the lever of power out of the hands of a muscle-bound representative of the old order, who’s paralyzed by the sudden change in the balance of forces. (The Milking Mothers turning on the water is another literal oppressed-putting-their-hands-on-the-levers-of-power moment.)
Joe uses different methods to rule different sections of the Citadel population. The Wretched are ruled by coercion–they have nothing and must sell their labor, bodies or children to get anything. The Treadmill Guy clearly has nothing to lose here. Look at him–you can see his ribs. I think it’s implied that the treadmill workers are worked to death, maybe in exchange for some meager supplies for their families. They aren’t fed enough to keep them physically fit enough to work the treadmill indefinitely; they seem to be burned through and replaced from the Wretched below. This guy, like the Wretched who pounce on Joe’s body, doesn’t need much prodding to throw in his lot with the prospect of change. Anything must be better than the present conditions.
But one dude with a bit more courage than his co-workers is easily overpowered. That’s why the backup from the pups–the people who were supposed to be Joe’s future soldiers–is important. The War Boys are primarily ruled by ideology–convinced that this is not only the natural order of things, but that dying for Joe is a privilege and an honor. But the hold of ideology can be shaken when reality contradicts it strongly enough. We see this happen to Nux, and we see that some of the pups haven’t been completely indoctrinated into the cult of Joe. People’s ideas can change. In revolutionary moments, many people’s ideas change quite dramatically.
The last piece of this tableau is the hulking Brakeman. He’s easily the biggest and strongest person on the platform, probably armed, and the person who’s invested with official authority. He represents the thin layer of people around Joe who are tied to his rule by enough privilege/status to feel some investment in keeping him in power. I’d say this includes Joe’s sons, Organic, and the other Imperators.
One of the common characteristics of many real-life revolutionary moments is that this layer, often represented by the higher ranks of the armed forces, hesitates and is paralyzed, when they formerly seemed impossibly strong. The balance of power has shifted enough that these people are no longer sure they have the impunity they enjoyed under the old tyrant, so they’re not sure what to do, and therefore do nothing. This is exactly what’s happening to this guy, and to his comrade on the lift (who is armed but does nothing once Furiosa, the Wives, the Vuvalini and the Wretched surround him), and to Corpus.
The Brakeman and his compatriot could have refused to raise the lift or shot at our already pretty ragged group of protagonists on the ground. But they’re overwhelmed by a collective, mostly unarmed surge of people who have nothing to lose from trying out a new order. Which is exactly what happens in a real revolution.
It’s a brilliantly-composed scene.
Basically this.
Oh George why couldn’t you have made it just a little more obvious that that guy wasn’t already at the lever? Then I could have enjoyed this knowledge a lot sooner
Am i the only one who thinks The Dag would become sort of Druid like in her new position of Keeper of The Seeds? Like full on shaman? I imagine her preforming some sort of ceremony to insure a good harvest, and tattooing her body with plants and stuff.
antiemetic and I have discussed The Dag becoming a full-on witch very quickly and naturally.
She’d live in a hut at the top of one of the towers, surrounded by green and the open sky.
In a few years, the small white-haired child she bore would become a constant fixture in the Citadel, her familiar, ever watching, carrying news of the happenings of the day.
“What did you see today, my pet?”
“The lizards sun on the highest rocks, but one lizard hides in the dark when he hurts.”
“He is a lonely lizard, beloved, who gnaws at his own tail when there is no one else to bite.”
War Boys would learn to respect and fear the Dag-witch, who knows the power of words and growing things. They would go to her for spells, for magic. Protect me in battle. Give me a chrome death. Make me strong. Make my lumps hurt less. Strike down my enemies. Find me love.
And she would help them, but always, always at a price. She does not want their blood or their chrome or their aqua-cola. For the magic of words, she accepts only the gift of their secrets. I will take the words you will not give to anyone else.
And so they tell her their secrets, they tell her their stories, and in return she paints words on their skin, giving them the power of the things they seek. Sometimes they cannot read, but they trust in the power of the Dag-witch’s incantations, sitting on the floor of her dark hut, breathing the smoke of burning leaves.
(Patience, she writes on the arm of one furious lizard, when the Pup he held as a baby is now a broad-shouldered Lancer who will not bend to reason, who is foolish and irascible, so unknowingly like the one who carried him for three hundred days.)
so I did a thing: Imperator Furiosa, taking selfies in a dingy tenement bathroom.
This is as finished as it’s going to get for Baltimore Comic Con. I may remake the forearm and hand for Katsu, depending on how masochistic I am feeling. Very steep learning curve on this, but I’m pretty pleased with it.

I love this detail so much. When Max gives Furiosa his blood, one of the Vuvalini holds the needle in Max’s arm, while the Dag holds the other needle to Furiosa’s arm. It’s such a powerful symbolic moment.
Her whole life, Furiosa’s been driven by the need to return to the Green Place, to find the Vuvalini, to be with her people again. She slowly worked her way up through the ranks at the Citadel until she was able to escape, and she took the wives with her as a fuck you to Immortan Joe, with any concerns about their welfare coming second.
But when she finally makes it back, she discovers her home is gone. Her people have been all but wiped out. The Green Place doesn’t exist. Home doesn’t exist. Everything she’d pined for, struggled for, fought for, is gone.
And all she can do is scream.
Then the ragged stranger offers her hope. He makes her a map from his own blood and tells her, ‘This is your way home.’ Maybe the Green Place from her past doesn’t exist anymore, but in the future lies the possibility of a new Green Place, one that she can build together with the wives.
She leads the charge, with everyone and everything relying on her. During the battle, she’s stabbed. And it just makes her angry. ‘I’m gonna need you to drive,’ she says to Nux. ‘I’ll get him out of our way.’
She’s badly injured. She’s bleeding out. She knows taking on Immortan Joe will mean her death, but she doesn’t care. Because it’s not about her need to get to the Green Place anymore, and it’s not about her own revenge on Joe. It’s about killing Joe for them. It’s about finding the Green Place for them. It’s about protecting the people she loves.
And if Cheedo the Fragile hadn’t confronted her fears by running into the arms of her enemy so she could pull Furiosa into the Gigahorse, if Toast hadn’t braved a loaded gun to throw off Immortan Joe’s equilibrium, if Max hadn’t fought an entire army so he could be there to catch her as she fell - if they hadn’t all loved her just as much as she loved them - she would have died killing Joe.
And finally we come to this beautiful scene as she lies dying, surrounded by her new family. The wives touch her and whisper to her. Max gives her his name and his heart’s blood. The last of the Vuvalini presses the needle to his arm and Dag holds the other end to Furiosa’s veins. We watch as the blood, emblematic of the love they all have for her, passes from the hands of her old family and through the hands of her new family, filling her with life once more.
Her whole life she’s been fixated on the past, pining to return to something that no longer exists. Now, at last, she has a future. By loving Max and the wives and by being loved in return, she is restored to life, and she’s able to make it home.
This is why Ace is called “The Ace”
I just want to picture Ace screaming like a drill sergeant :D
I find it interesting how Capable is the only one of the Five Wives who does not possess a qualifier to her name. Like, Angharad is “The Splendid,” Toast is “The Knowing,” and Cheedo is “The Fragile.” Even the Dag is indicative of the fact that she is ~the only~ Dag of the Wasteland. I wonder what would have been Capable’s qualifier if she had been given one by Joe.
Or do you think maybe Capable IS the qualifier? And there was another name, but she’s dropped it?
Perhaps it was a name given to her by a family that basically sold her to Joe, and she no longer wanted anything to do with that name.
Is it canon that Immortan Joe gave them the qualifiers? I thought it was just part of the weird world they live in, or maybe they’d given each other the names.
I don’t think it is. Joe seems to be using the name “Splendid” as well as “Angharad” for instance, so I’m not sure that one of them is a name she had before and one he gave her.
I do think that maybe the qualifiers is names they’ve given each other, which would make it make a lot of sense that she has discarded the old one and only calls herself the new.
But I don’t honestly know, it’s quite possible that the qualifiers ARE names given by Joe. Anyone?
