March 15 2007, 9pm
Nobody had noticed your exit at the wedding.
A part of you was glad people didn't see you leave with Frank, especially Gerard, who was terribly worried for you. However, it was a matter of time before someone noticed. Despite your state, you managed to get into Frank's car without his help. He was impressed by your condition, but he was always cautious at your every move in case you fell or needed a hand.
The car wasn't that old beaten sedan from the 80s, it was a new white color honda civic. It was such an odd choice in your mind, you thought he would never change that goddamn car, even less for a sports car like that. When you first started dating, that old sedan had stopped in the middle of a highway, close to nowhere in Jersey, the two of you pushed the car away from the street and into the grass, it had been the first time he looked into your eyes with care and love, the first time you paid attention his chest tattoos with and the first time you had sex with him.
Passing by that spot made you wish Frank would crash the car and recreate that scene again, to burn the tension away that was killing you and wishing it was killing him just as much. You avoided his sight like the plague, but his profile was reflected through the window pane. Everything felt like a gateway to lust, you could see the exact spot outside the highway where it all had happened back in 2003. The ghost of both your bodies kept lingering through the air, as if you could smell the sweat and feel the heat of it all. Everything angered you, the lack of care and touch right now felt unnatural, but still, you remained resilient and looked away.
Not a single word had been spoken through the whole ride up until that point. You hadn't given Frank your new address and he hadn't asked for it either. Maybe he still thought you lived in Queens with Eli. Secretly, you hoped he would take you back home, to that one shitty apartment complex in upstate New Jersey, where you still hoped he lived. You wanted to relieve it all one more time before saying goodbye again forever. To drive around his neighborhood, smoke with the windows up while listening to his mixtapes, and go home and kiss all night before driving you back to New York the next morning. That old sedan worked in your favor every time, you really love that car but it was for the better to let it rest in peace.
Frank had a generic rock station playing Foo Fighters songs one after the other. Frank wasn't singing alone as he usually did, or tapping his fingers to the beat. On your end, you were falling asleep. Frank noticed the moment you began cuddling into the sit, he saw your sleepy face through the right car mirror, something he had been doing most of the night. He hissed and his mussels relaxed to the sound of your little snores, back in the day, they were a nightmare, but now they sounded like a home. He didn't understand what he was doing right now, driving you home, maybe you would invite him into your house, show you around, get to your room, kiss, undress, stay the night, he would pay for a plane ticket to Chicago, so you the stress of flighting would disappear with every thrust. He glanced at your sleeping body and saw a fallen strap from your dress, a distraction that made him drive straight, missing the exit to New York and going upstate.
You eventually woke up cuddled into Frank's suit while Everlong playing on the radio. The car was still on despite being parked, your tiredness couldn't make up the scene quite well, but as you began to sit straight, you heard a familiar sound, Frank's garage. He was outside opening the door, a familiar sight. He had messy hair and was standing on his tip toes without his jacket, you noticed his skin through the cracks of his un untucked. As he was coming back, you pretended to be asleep and hoped he didn't see the smile on your face.
After parking his car, he tried to wake you up by shaking your arm, you cuddled into the sit even more in response. Defeated, Frank took his jacket and carried you inside. This was a first for him, as he had never been able to carry you before. You felt how he pulled you closer every time he would open and closed a door, listening to the sound of his heartbeat match his every step until he lay you off in his couch. His house still smelled like cigarettes with a faint smell of weed, but also to a lavender candle he got two christmases ago. You hadn't opened your eyes yet, either to keep with the act for a bit longer or out of fear to see his life without you. However, still, it all felt familiar rather than strange.
"You can drop the act now" Frank murmured, you picked this as condescending, you squinted your eyes out of embarrassment "I know you're awake".
The lights were dim and your vision was clear as day. The alcohol hadn't left your body, if anything it had settled in more than when you first left. With every move you made, your head felt like it would fly away on its own. Your eyes laid upon a wall with three guitars hanging, his acoustic guitar and two Les Pauls, his white Pansy guitar and the black one you gifted him back when you first toured together. The other guitars looked used while yours looked brand new, yet dustier than the other two. You wonder if it was the exact same guitar from back then, and wonder if he had stopped playing it all together, why was it still hanging and not hidden somewhere, or why didn't he smash it onstage like every other guitar he owns.
As you kept observing the place, you noticed not a thing had changed, his books were still piled by the window, the same radioactive green ashtray was still the only decoration in his coffee table, the same magnets adorned his fridge. Time has left this place as you've always known it. You were eager to keep exploring, but you couldn't leave the sofa. Frank came back from the kitchen with two mugs, his had green tea and yours had some black coffee. He had let loose of his tie and the first three buttons of his shirt were undone, You thanked him for the gesture and signaled him to leave it on the table he sat across from you on a plastic chair with a smoke on his hand, his eyes were fixated on your face, while you yourself kept looking at the gap between his belt and his shirt.
"You know" he mentioned before taking a drag from his cigarette "When we first started dating, I could never sleep because you snored so loudly" you noticed a smile forming on his face "Eventually, you would wake yourself up and lay in the right position, no more loud snores, but your breathing would still change, when you sleep, you inhale properly and look at ease, when I carried you out of my car, you breathing was normal again, quick and silent". He took another drag and kept on looking at you. "I always loved the things I see that no one ever does".
"Do you see me though" you finally spit words "I mean, do you still see in me the girl you were gonna marry?"
He didn't say a word, but rather he turned off his cigarette and sat next to you on the couch. Everything happened so fast you didn't notice his hand on your chin, begging for your attention with his eyes. You didn't feel the warmth of his hand, a phantom touch. He brushed your open lips with his thumb and grabbed your leg. As he began to move, your phone began to ring, but Frank grabbed it from your purse and turned it off.
Before he could get back to you, his phone began to ring as well. Gerard you thought. He ignored the ringing for a while, but you couldn't stand the sound. And just like that you moved from your sit and looked through the mess Frank had in his car, frustrated at how his driving manner had ruined the scene you made up in your head.
"What are you doing?" Frank exclaimed and began pushing you away with his left hand. "I thought you were asleep"
"I was until your goddamn phone woke me up dumbass" after finding it, you answered to Frank's dismay.
"Hi Gee, you're on speaker"
"I wouldn't question your decisions right now if you had just said goodbye you know" Gerard answered
"I'm taking her to Manhattan but I missed the exit" Frank screamed at his phone "She was too drunk, I'll get back there when I'm done with her" he grabbed the phone from your hands and hung up.
"Who told you I live in Manhattan now?"
"Gerard"
"When"
"Some time ago"
You hated when he acted like this, all snarky and dismissive. He only acts like this when he doesn't trust a person well "Weren't you gonna ask for my address?"
"Well I assume you live somewhere in Chelsea, because it was the only neighborhood you kinda like in Manhattan" you looked at him with annoyance at his remarks "so I was thinking of parking around Chelsea Park and then ask you" he looked at you briefly with a smile.
You rolled your eyes and answered "I live in front of the park actually"
Franks smile got bigger and he began to laugh "God, there's really things that never change, huh"
"Oh God, shut up, Gerard probably told you the address" Every small talk you had with this man has felt like a social experiment in attempts to see you break. You couldn't read him as well as he seems to read you. His words sound like he cares, but his face and body read indifference. Maybe it was all his revenge, to say things like he cares to hurt you.
"I swear he didn't" he continued to laugh "call Gerard right now and ask him"
"I don't wanna" You remained angry yet calmed as you didn't want to let him win. "Besides, he's not the type of guy that says things like that just because"
Frank kept on playing it cool "Well, maybe I care to know about you. You know, the girl I was gonna marry but hasn't spoken a word to me since May"
"Says the guy that fucked some girl as soon as the relationship ended"
"You know Natalie isn't some girl"
You didn't hesitate to say "Oh go fuck yourself actually"
"No fuck you and you avoidant snarky as-"
Before Frank could finish, he hit a car in front of him. Nothing mayor, but enough to bring you both back to earth. The two stayed in silence until a man that could not be over 30 came out of the car. While Frank spoke to him, you noticed his family had your album playing in the car.
"Wait, you're the girl from Tidal" the man said as broke your train of thought
"Yeah" you smiled awkwardly "Hi"
"Could you sign a CD for my daughter, she loves you so much"
You calmed down and smiled, shook your head and got out of the car and met his family. Frank got out of the car and called his insurance company, as he was on the phone, he watched you hug the girls, you sang for them and took a picture. Their eyes were shining and so were yours. It's the happiest he had seen you all day, not even at the wedding were you that radiant. He could only look at you from afar and hope for something sometime. He reacted to the back of the car and lit up a cigarette while listening carefully to the song you wrote about him. It was a song where you wonder if he ever dreamed about you, and how you imaged his dreams. He remembered when you first wrote that song, how scared you were on showing it to him. It was his favorite off the record, his favorite part was one where you talked about the halloween party where he first kissed you. It wasn't your first kiss, but the first one he gave you. "I hope to read your dreams on end" the song said.
After a while, you got back with him and asked him for a smoke. He lit up one himself and gave it to you.
"Let's share, it's my last one" you accepted out of necessity.
You copied his mannerisms and looked at the moon. Frank would have his hand resting closest to yours. Every time your finger met, he would feel the pit in his stomach he first felt back in 2002 when he first saw you in the crowd of that show. Only his eyes screamed the words he couldn't say, but you couldn't care to see.
"It's a shame you cannot see the stars from here" you broke the silence.
"I don't think you ever could with Manhattan so close to here" Frank said while looking at you, your eyes still looking for a star. He gave you a faint smile and stole another drag of smoke, now looking at his shoes.
The cigarette kept burning, the insurance company arrived and Frank immediately took the blame. He never left your side but gave up on trying to hold your hand. You noticed, but chose to ignore it.
Eventually, everything was sorted out, Frank's car seemed to have interacted and the other family didn't take any major damage either, just some paint and a little bump.
After finishing the cigarette, the two of you hit the road back. It was too late for Frank to go back to the wedding. You turned off the radio station and enjoyed the silence for a while. Frank was too afraid to speak and you were too busy thinking about what he said about Natalie. You knew he liked her since before you dated, but his comment echoed in your mind, she was the contrary of you yet both of you were loved by the same man. You hated how fast he move on from you, but you didn't blame him for it.
You heard Frank call your name "I want us to be friends again".
Not a single emotion could be read on your face "I'd like that too".
"Memories invade the soul through senses: smells, sounds & touch. It all comes back and lingers, until it doesn't"

AN: I think it's very obvious this was the original chapter 1 before I chose to write the story in media res. I wanted to post it yesterday in honor of Bullet's anniversary, but I was too tired to finish it. My plan is to intertwine a present day and a flashback atm. Thank you to anyone reading. Updates are gonna take longer but hopefully not too much.
Flashback 1: vampires will never hurt you
September 15 2002
The New York City skyline began to fade as the car began to drive across New Jersey.
It had been two years since you last visited the state, two years since the last time you had played a show there, an intimate one at least. The last time you came was on your seventeenth birthday, your band played its first "big show" opening for The Strokes and some other local acts; the memory was still a blur, all you recall was the X adorning your hand the roar of the crowd who first sung back the lyrics to one of your songs and the face of a red haired man side stage with his mouth wide open, a sentiment perfectly captured by your diary entry:
ears still buzzing, maybe everything will work out
... and it did.
Your band kept opening shows for The Strokes. Being around the new promising act of the new millennium allowed for big labels to come through. The crowds then got bigger and bigger until your debut album came earlier this year, Moving in Pictures: as if The Cure and Green Day had collided and created an album with lyrics only a teenage girl could write, or whatever magazines began to label the album. You wrote mostly about a breakup with your first love, a girl that had moved outer state who suddenly sent you a letter confessing her feelings for another person. It had been the greatest betrayal of your life, you felt that there was no life after for a while. Later on that heart ache transformed into fear of rejection, a sentiment that only got worst with the sudden success of your band, everything kept moving and you felt stuck in a time that no longer existed.
Between adulthood and a conservative family, that believed in things like war, live music kept your spirit flowing. After the album came out, a summer tour in Europe came about, your song Overtime, became a top 40 hit in the UK which showed in the size of festival crowds. Nothing mattered when they sung back the lyrics at you, it all transported you to that night in Jersey when you first felt the thrill of it all. Later that year, your band was asked to perform at the VMAS, back at home with 3 nominees. You performed the song for the first time in American television, it freaked out the press enough to cause conservatives to panic as your top dared to show a bit of cleavage, but your stage presence was the highlight of the show, as if you were meant for the stage while you danced around. The hate somehow made you feel secured as it came from the wrong places.
Local shows still were your favorite places to be. The New York rock scene began to take off after strokes-fever, which led to shows feeling empty yet crowded; a trend. The smell of sweat and cigarettes began to fade from them. Your bassist, Adam, was from a small town in Jersey, he was two years older than you and began his career at a local hardcore scene. He was friends with another bassist from a band that has begun to grow in the scene, My Chemical Romance. Adam wanted to check their set for a while but the tour had made it nearly impossible, but after this past weekend, your schedule was free until October, and so you went.
You did not know what to expect, their music was a mystery for everyone in that care. Adam shared stories about his days in school with one of the members and about different places to go in town. You just kept looking at the autumn leaves that were beginning to form as well as the malls, signs and houses on the road. A familiar feeling came through; the anxiety of that first show came back, but rather than stage fright, it was a fear of rejection, as if you had gone too mainstream for a local scene. You went by a stage name, Iris Stern, you did this for privacy reasons at first, but lately, it became a tool to avoid feeling alienated from your reality and to control what went out to the public. You still needed to enjoy moments like this, with just your band and live music. Today, you were just yourself wearing your hair up, lip balm, baggy cargos and a back hoodie, to blend in the crowd.
"Are you okay?" said Eli, your band's guitarist, in a worrisome tone "your eyes look bright red"
You looked at her for before sneezing in her face:
"All good. Allergies, we haven't used the car since February, maybe we should clean it"
Eli was the closest thing to a soulmate you ever had. You met her in middle school after moving to Queens. You became friends after sitting next to her in the library and realized you were reading the same book as her. Ever since then, everything you discovered, you would show it to her, whether that be music, clothes, books, even a crush. If something was wrong, she would call on your bluff.
She laid her head on your shoulder the rest of the ride, you kept looking at the window, reminiscing on your faded memory as you closed your eyes, just enjoying the music until you hit the carseat headrest.
"Okay, it's almost showtime get the hell out of here" said Tom, your drummer and designated driver for the night. You opened the door and stretched out your back and legs while the band began entering the venue; it was the same one you played back in the year 2000, a hundred people and a packed street with cars. Music was already playing, but Adam said it was not his people which was a relief.
The venue asked for IDs and marked an X on your hand as you still couldn't buy drinks. Eli washed off hers so she could buy some drinks, you still choose to wait 'till 21 and use a real ID. "Music is my drug" you told Eli in a joking matter while making a peace sign. Unamused, she rolled her eyes with a smile and grabbed your hand. The two of you began to merge with the crowd, it was mostly men from many different ages. The smell of weed became stronger by the second and you began to feel lightheaded, until the lights went off and the band began to play. A wave of people woke you up, but Eli dropped your hand, you were alone in the sea of men.
The band's frontman began to speak "We're My Chemical Romance", Adam's friends, you through, fuck just in time.
They started playing a fainted melody that kept on growing through its guitars, it was a bit gothic, and then the frontman began to sing:
And if they get me
and the sun goes down
into the ground
There was too much distortion for you to understand the words right away, but his voice drew you into the song. As it began to build up, you were moving your head and joining the crowd through the punches and the sweat. There were two guitars playing complementing each other, between the harmonies the lead guitar gave and the roughness of the rhythmic guitar. The base line was hypnotic and, although you did not understand a word being sung, you believed everything the frontman sung. It was just the first song, but you were feeling every note, every push, every sound from the band.
The concert kept going and you remained bewitched by the band, always banging your head, eventually letting loose of your hoodie. You even shared a blunt with a stranger despite your fear of a bad trip. The frontman took a break to introduce the band. His name was Gerard, a name you remembered from Adam's comments earlier in the car. His brother Mikey was on bass, Ray was the lead guitarist and Frank played rhythmic. You locked eyes with the ladder for a second before he moved his face and drank some water. Your eyes stayed on his neck, a scorpion tattoo, you couldn't look anywhere else. He looked back at your puzzled face and laughed while the lights went dim again, "This is Early Sunsets" Gerard said.
It was the first song titled you heard. The guitar began playing a melody that felt completely different to everything you had hurt so far. It was calming. Some people were singing alone, but you just stared at the band with your mouth slitty opened. On stage, every musician stayed still for the first time in the show, they had shifted their energy into trying to hit the perfect notes.Gerard's voice began to take over the guitars and became the focal point of the song:
And if I had the guts
To put this to your head
But would anything matter
If you're already dead?
You covered your mouth in a gasp as you understood what was being sung. The lyrics came clear out from the shitty amps for the first time in the night. You thought it was probably the blunt, but for the rest of the song, a few tears began to roll from your eyes, not in sadness, but in excitement, your skin felt cold to the touch as the room full of people began to feel empty. Frank noticed your face in the crowd, as the song began to end. There was a dim light in your face that highlighted those little tears. You couldn't move from the chills and his melancholic eyes lingered at yours. The song was the only moment Frank was able to take in the crowd and, in that sea of people, you were like a star in his point of view.
"There you are" a familiar voice came behind you, bringing you back to earth. It was Tom and Eli. "Now we need to find Adam"
As your bandmates were dragging you around the crowd, you kept looking at the stage as your life depended on it. Early Sunsets ended and the heavier songs kept going, every single one better than the last. Frank lost sight of you and kept going with the show as he usually did, but in every break between songs, he would search for you, failing in the process. He could only hope you hadn’t left the venue.
After finding Adam, Gerard announced that they were playing their last song. Eli bought you a hot dog to bring you back to earth after all the weed. You enjoyed the final moments of the show with your friends and just like that, it all came to an end. You applauded and shouted louder than anyone around you. "That was great" you told your friends "great band".
Other bands kept coming up and your friends wanted to stay, but you had started to feel lightheaded and went outside for some fresh air. The cold air clashed with your bare arms, so you put your disguise back. It's not as if you were trying to hide from fans or something, you just needed to feel invisible after all the new attention that came your way. There was a flickering lightball that was starting to give you a headache, the pain was your queue to go back inside and ask someone for a pill. You covered your eyes trying to fight the pain when you heard the door open, it was Frank with a blunt in his hand. He looked around and saw your face and started running your way. He needed to know your name, but the sudden burst of light in your eyes only made you see a random man coming your way. Before you could say hi, you kicked his balls before you could realize who it was.
“Fuck, you’re Frank from the band oh my God I’m so sorry. I thought you were gonna kill me I don’t see well with this stupid light”
Either he was struck by you or was a chill guy, but you managed to make him laugh while still in pain. “It’s okay, it’s like a compliment to be scary to someone when you’re 5 '5”. You smiled at him and picked up the blunt he dropped. It was an awkward scene yet the two of you couldn’t stop laughing. He eventually lit his blunt and asked for your name. The two of you began to hit it off well, he was very open about anything you asked him. He talked about his family, his love for punk and New Jersey with the most vibrant energy. You asked about his scorpion tattoo as it was the first thing you noticed in him:
“Do tattoos have meaning to you? or you just like them because they’re cool” you asked while taking a hit of a second blunt
“I mean” he quivered “I got it after I realized that music could actually be my job, cause what office job would hire a scrawny fucker with a scorpion on his neck?”
“That’s cool” you told him “I don’t know why my first thought is that maybe you were a scorpio and just really loved horoscopes and stars”
“I am a scorpio, born on October 31st”
You looked at him with shock, a little too exaggerated, but the weed was beginning to take a hit on you “God you’re so cool”
Frank eventually started talking about his music journey through the years. He eventually mentioned a show at that same venue, that he opened for The Strokes with his other band. Your mind began to deviate as you were trying to remember if you had seen him before, if both of you had opened the same show two years ago.
“Do you remember anything from that night, like any other band that played?” you asked
“Well, I got there late so I only saw The Strokes and Tidal before they sold out”
His words made you feel the cold air harder than before, you wanted to argue with him, but a part of you was enjoying the thrill of his ignorance of your art.
“What do you mean by sell out? Why just them and not The Strokes, they basically come from the same”
He laughed, unable to read your discomfort “I mean, you just have to see how the singer has changed you know. That show was the first time I heard her voice and it was as if she had casted a spell on everyone in the room. Her voice and her guitar was all she needed. I stood on the side stage unable to move. But yesterday they were at the VMAS and you look at Iris and she was a whory emo Britney” through the entire time he never looked at you until the last part “she doesn’t even play guitar anymore, its a shame”
Your face showed no sign of emotion, for the first time your stage name felt as personal as your real one. You didn’t like how he spoke about you, but you couldn’t deny most of the things he said “It’s not nice to call a girl a whore you know”
Before the moment could get any more tense, Gerard came outside with Adam, who came around your spot: “Gee, this is the girl herself, Iris Stern herself”
As you shook Gerard’s hand, Frank’s face began to go pale. You stood up and congratulated the singer on the amazing show: “I see you’ve met Frank” Gerard said.
“Yeah we were just chatting, but I want to go back inside, I’ll catch go guys inside” you helped Frank to stand up, his face read shame all over.
“You know I was just playing cool, right?” he said
“You know, for future flirting times, girls don’t like when you call them whory”
You're a famous singer that just began to gain mainstream success. Your ex who plays guitar in a famous band who is begging to hit a new high. AN: This is an idea I've had in my and I have been meaning to actually write it down because of the lack of Frank x Reader fics in AO3. Every flashback is going to be like a one shot that complements the story. I haven't written anything in forever and English isn't my first language so I'm sorry if I make any mistakes. I do hope someone finds enjoyment in this :)
Chapter 1: Cigarette Smoke
March 15 2007
“You may now kiss the bride” said the priest at your friend Ray’s wedding. Everyone was cheering for the happy couple, his groomsmen, who happened to be his bandmates, were clapping in tears from the beautiful scene.
You were part of the crowd, sitting in front of them with a fainted smile and a small tear of joy, clapping as loud as everyone else. You were happy to come, you almost didn’t. It had been six months since you last had spoken to any member of the band, and it had passed almost a year since you denied Frank Iero’s hand in marriage. To think of the awkward encounter that was bound to happen between the two of you and your gut feeling telling you “everyone in that band hates you now” made your hands shiver and aware of your breathing pattern. You threw up that same morning out of pure anxiety. After the scene, you smoked two cigarettes by your window, to calm your nerves, you were already wearing your dress without any makeup on. You were looking at the clouds waiting for a sign, Just don’t go and buy an expensive gift you thought. You lived in Manhattan and could see New Jersey from your apartment. You had just moved in and it still didn't feel like a home, which didn't mean much to you right now. It was a beautiful sunny spring day that clashed with your humor. As you finished one last drag of smoke, your phone vibrated. It was a message from Gerard that only said “hop 2 c u later :)”. The text made you smile, more than Frank, you missed your friends. Although it was a simple gesture, it was enough to drag you out of the home and drive an hour and a half to the venue.
Everyone’s eyes were fixed on the newlyweds as they walked outside the venue. Looking at Ray, how happy he was, made you forget about the man standing in front of you. As Ray fade from your view, melancholy began to take over your body as you saw him cheer on his friend. He was wearing the same suit you got him for the Grammy’s back in 2005. The same suit he wore while he kissed you on live TV after Dave Grohl announced your band, Tidal, had one best rock song. He kept the same star you once pinned on the jacket, same spot and all. Either he never washed it after that night or placed it that same spot himself. His hands revealed new tattoos, which only led you to wonder what new surprises lay under that suit. Your eyes jumped into the bare side of his neck, a place where he would ask you to leave a hickey before he went on stage. It was white, no sign left of you. Lost in thought he locked eyes with you, the same eyes that you have always loved. What was left of your smile disappeared in an instance, you closed your eyes and looked away. You stared at the door until Ray had fully left the venue. All you could do is sight out of shame.
Frank kept his eyes on you, he didn't know if it was lust or sadness taking over him. He looked at your hair, unusually long and shiny. You began wearing your natural hair color, something Frank never got to see while you were dating, he only saw the roots around the time you broke up with him. You wore a lilac sleeveless dress that showed your upper back, nothing too revealing. It was strange seeing you in anything that wasn’t black or red at a formal event. He knew you mostly wore those colors to follow your past album’s aesthetic, but lilac was a strange change. When you moved your hair to the front, he saw part of your shoulder tattoo that had begun to fade. Frank convinced you to get it after visiting your family on Christmas. It was the lyrics to a Jeff Buckley song you used to sing in karaoke to signal that the party was over. Frank could never listen to it without thinking of your voice and his skin next to yours. So much has changed for both of you in a year. He was struck by the passing of time, how the woman that saw him grow into the musician he is today is sitting in front of him today, how she cannot lock eyes with him. How she actually looked like a celebrity and not just the girl from Queens that would write poems at 3 am. He didn't recognize you and hated that.
“We have to go, it's picture time” Gerard told Frank. He nodded and walked outside. You remained in your seat, now looking at your phone, you were texting your bandmates to see if any of them had come to the wedding, which you doubted as your tour started tomorrow in Chicago, but you had hopes someone would stay behind with you. For that same reason, you weren’t planning on staying for the party, you just wanted to congratulate Ray, say hi to the Way brothers and leave, Irish goodbye. You closed your phone when you realized you wouldn't get an answer and headed outside. Ray was taking photos with his family while his groomsmen waited for their turn. You leaned on the wall while lighting up another cigarette. You didn’t know anyone at the party other than the band. You were surprised to see Gerard with jet-black hair again and Mickey without his glasses, they were laughing with Frank until the photographer called them. As they posed, memories of the last time you all hung together came rushing back in chunks. It was in England, your first time headlining a festival. My Chemical Romance was playing before your band but you were crying after seeing Frank kissing a woman, Natalie Mayer, the girl of Frank's dreams or whatever he would say back when you first met. All you saw was her slim body and her blue hair, but the scene made you spiral. Gerard was avoiding your questions about her and Ray brought you a lukewarm beer before going on stage. Everything after that was a blur. You didn't understand why you care so much, you had ended the relationship after all.
You heard Mickey call your name after the photos were taken, he ran into your arms with Gerard following behind “God you smell like an ashtray. Where’s the rest of the band”
“Oh, right now, probably around Michigan” you said in a playful tone while he pulled you out of the hug “we actually have a show tomorrow in Chicago”
“Oh shit, I didn't know that. I’m glad I can get to see you before we loose you to the music” Mickey laughed and pulled a cigarette, he wanted to smoke with u “we miss you guys every day” you made a frown and light his smoke “I miss you guys more”
Gerard watched the scene while thinking on what to say. The last time he saw you was outside a party celebrating the release of The Black Parade. You weren’t planning on going, but Gerard insisted after you called him that night. You showed up wearing sweats and a Black Flag shirt, Frank’s old shirt. You were drunk and had called Gerard out of panic after your guitarist Eli didn’t answer the phone. You stood outside the bar with your makeup undone, unable to enter the building. Ever since then, he was worried about your wellbeing, he didn’t understand how a breakup could mess someone up the way you were that night. He never reached out though, he was too scared to say the wrong thing. Today however, he was happy to see you looked okay. You were smoking a lot, but you looked sober. He wanted to make sure you were fine “Congrats on Casually Cruel by the way” He said.
That was your third album, your newest release. You began writing IT the night you realized you had feelings for Frank. It was supposed to be the band’s happy album, the last one had been thematically darker after you explored your newfound fame and the death of your mother. This new album, you wanted to capture the happiest time of your life, with new friends and a man who loved you and your music, but it slowly became a documentation on your breakup with Frank. You made last minute changes by taking some love songs out of the record and adding other tracks that talked about your insecurities in the relationships, like the final track that detailed your drive from Jersey to Manhattan after the breakup titled “water in your hand”. Despite the album being so mellow, you left the song “Patterson” in the record, a great love ballad you wrote for Frank and the first song on the record. Your record label felt it was a hit, and they were right. It currently sat at number nine in the charts, your biggest hit in your career, it had slowly climbed to the top ten since November, when you released the album. It was inescapable at that time and Frank was sick of it. “Thank you, congrats to you guys too, only Hannah Montana is above you now” you all laughed.
Ray and his wife came over with you. After a quick chat you were gonna excuse yourself, but Ray convinced you to stay for a while, you were taking a plane at 3am anyway and your bag was ready to go. During the party you stayed around Gerard most of the time, you didn’t sit at his table but he hung out with you on a balcony while enjoying free drinks. You had forgotten about Frank for a while. The music stopped as Ray and his wife got around the dance floor, their first dance was about to begin. Gerard went back to the party while you stayed outside. Something by The Beatles was the song the chose, cliche, but you always thought it would be the song you walked down the aisle at your own wedding.
The scene felt strange, the weight of time began to swallow you while Mikey and Gerard stood with the crowd. You still didn’t understand why you ghosted them for so long, how you let things get so bad between you and Frank after the breakup, one that made even less sense to you now. It felt like the perfect time to leave, but all you did was stand and watch through a glass door. You put another cigarette in your mouth. While looking for your lighter, a spark from a black zippo lit it up for you. Tattoos and black nail polish adorned the owner’s hand “Frank”.
There he was in front of you, lighting your cigarette. A habit he got you in back in 2003. It all felt too familiar yet distant. He looked thinner and more secure of himself, his hair was longer than his usual fringe, yet he was using the same zippo you once gifted him on your five month anniversary. Everything came flooding back, from late night talks on tour to the after sex smokes you would share at home. You kept staring into his eyes for a while until you finally lit your smoke.
“It's rude to ignore people, you know” he said while lighting a cigarette for himself.
“Look who’s talking” you murmured under your breath, no longer looking at him.
Both of you stood next to each other, with Frank leaning on the balcony’s railing and you standing still, your left arm holding your waist and your right arm holding your smoke. Standing next to him sickened you, two strangers yet you know what brand of cigarettes he is smoking right now by the smell alone, Marlboro Golds, they’re light and leave the least smell in your clothes, but if you stand close enough, the smell kicks in, it melts with his cologne. It was the same brand he smoked when he first started making a profit from music, it’s the smell of your best dates and nights. The memories creeped in and so did the coldness of night.
“I thought you wouldn’t come” Frank broke the silence.
“Why? Because I hate you so much?” you responded, finally looking at him, he was staring at the faded sunset behind you.
“Because I saw your tour dates” he said while taking a drag of his smoke, locking eyes with you
You were never good at hiding your emotions, your body shifted as you gave all your attention to his face, a crumbled mouth and furrowed brows that melted into you. His answer struck what was left of your confidence, you didn’t know how to answer. Either he cared for you or was watching too much TV. It didn’t matter as he at least noticed things. His eyes looked greener than you remembered, except that his tender look shifted into ones of indifference as soon as he met with your eyes. You wanted to understand what was going on in his head and maybe see why he suddenly cared so much to talk to you, something he hadn’t done for a year, but you chose your peace and watched Ray, his smile and his wife’s dress helped you calm yourself down. Frank could read you like a book. Your grin showed frustration and sadness, but you brushed it up by taking a deep breath, something you did that face when you wanted to cry, but didn’t feel safe enough to do so. Usually after you scrunch your mouth, you would hide in his chest and cry for three minutes exactly, he would hug you and draw circles in your back until you made a joke, but not today. For all he knew, you now saw him as a stranger. All he did was take the hit and watch Ray as well.
“What are you doing?” you spoke while gathering your thoughts.
“I’m just being polite unlike other girls” that was supposed to be a joke, you didn’t laugh, you rolled your eyes and looked back at him “Don’t you have a date to bother? Aren’t you dating Natalie anyway or whatever her name was?”
He stayed in silence, thinking if he should speak or leave you alone but you kept looking at him with hope, or something like that: “No” he put out his cigarette and flicked it out, your eyes opened wide “Not right now”.
You opened your eyes in shock, you didn’t expect that after what happened in England. “You’re fucking with me”
“Why would I?” he said right after you finished speaking.
Once again, he left you without a word in mind. When you asked for Natalie, you weren’t hoping for this, you wanted to feel the heartbreak one more time to prove it was gone. The thought of kissing him left you static and forcing you to live through it all again, yet you didn’t. Your cigarette disappeared and you tried to flee the scene, but Frank grabbed your arm, his grip wasn’t strong, but you didn’t fight it. The song had finished and the crowd inside cheered. His hand felt softer than you remembered, and his eyes gave hints of caring once again: “Please. I'm sorry. Let's start over. Please”.
You pushed his arm away with indifference and signaled him to follow you to the bar. You asked for a drink for Frank and yourself, his favorite one. He noticed the gesture but was hesitant to take a sip. He didn’t drink that whole night out of fear of saying too much, you on the other hand had drunk four drinks with this one and you were starting to feel the buzz. All you did was small talk about work. He asked you about how it felt to be the most successful singer in the world to which you said “God no, we’re one hit wonders if anything” a comment that eased the tension between the two of you. Frank was fixated on your smile, how your lipstick stood in place despite the drinking, how you still hadn’t fixed a crooked tooth and how your laugh came out deeper, probably from all of the smoking. All night he had been tense, thinking about what he was going to tell you. The familiarity made him drop his tough guy act. You broke his trance as you asked if he would have his drink, he gave it to you unknowingly of the courage you gained:
“Did it hurt when I left?” you spit out after finishing the drink in two sips. It was the question you were eager to asked but never dared to. That night in London destroyed the memories you shared with him. You knew he’d move on with Natalie soon, but not two months soon. It shattered whatever feeling you had for him left and created a void that made you feel out of your body. “Did my absence mean anything to you?”
Frank chuckled at your comments, which didn’t amuse you at all. He never understood why you broke up with him so suddenly, he was dumped while standing on one knee in front of the woman he loved. He smiled and looked into your eyes “I never felt your absence. How can I when I hear your voice everywhere I go? Every radio station plays your song, every restaurant, every venue, God, even outside my building a girl plays it on guitar and sings every day about how you feel me when I’m gone and how I hold your face like water. On New Years day I had to see you sing it in fucking Times Square and I had to pretend it meant nothing to me, because maybe it didn’t, but that day it felt as if the world was falling on my shoulders and I had to remember every single mistake I’ve made. And you know at day I hate you so much for writing that Goddamn song and for having your stupid voice and how I can hear a slip of a Jersey accent in it” There was desperation in his voice, but no hesitation in his body. It was like looking through a mirror, showing the opposite of who you were. You stood in shame listening to the answer you wanted to hear with a smile on your face. “... but at night I see us both living together in Jersey as you promised that day, and I see you in my bed with your stupid black bra playing guitar and I miss you. That’s why I broke up with Natalie”
He remained calmed after his confession and your smile got bigger: “I’m sorry it didn’t work out between the two” You said getting closer to his face, but Franks poker face broke by your indifference, punching the bar’s counter out of spite yet nobody cared for the scene he started as the music kept getting louder: “Is that all you say after I opened my heart to your stupid question? What about you, dumbass, did you ever care? Or is it all an act for your lame songs? Gerard is worried about your drinking and he is always nagging me about my mistreatment to you, but you’re out there singing our songs like it’s nothing”
You began to sober up after his comment, your eyes got watery but not a single tear came out. With a soft tone, you answered his questions: I care, oh I care. I haven’t kissed anyone else's lips since I left, and I don’t know why I care for you anyways. I didn’t what to put out Patterson, but the label insisted, you know, and now every night for the rest of the year I need to get on stage and sing the number one song in the world without a single passion or else I would break in front of everyone, you know. And sometime I wonder if I sing it in hopes you’d listen and come fight for me, or to make your life as miserable as possible, and I can’t name a selfless reason to hate you”
Frank grabbed your shivering body in a hug, you melted right back and began to cry. When he felt your tears through his shirt, he pulled you out and grabbed your face tenderly, he held you like water as if you were going to escape from him, trying to stop time just for a second.
