Jenna asked me how I felt about Katara, and there was so much that goes into my answer that I had to make my own separate post with an accompanying half-assed graphic. You’re welcome!
How do I feel about Katara?
Katara means a great deal to me. When I started watching the show, I was the exact same age as Katara was. I identified with her a great deal. Sure, I’ll probably never have to stop a war or save the world, but that doesn’t mean the challenges she faced weren’t relatable.
Seeing both acknowledged sexism, and a girl calling out that sexism in Avatar was amazing. Basically, seeing Katara call out people’s bullshit regarding her gender made me feel less alone and gave me courage to fight the same fight. Her fight with Pakku still gives me chills. Her strength and her unwillingness to just take her society’s nonsense about her gender was very inspiring.Â
Her compassion also spoke to me a lot. She was willing to throw away a lot of her life for a kid she barely knew, and while she wouldn’t and didn’t do the same for every person that crossed her back, she was always eager and willing to do whatever she could to help those she encountered in her life. Even if her attempts didn’t always work quite like she wanted, she still tried to make things better for others. She even offered to heal Iroh, who was still essentially her enemy at the time, when Azula shot him. And she forgave Zuko, for god’s sake! You know, the guy who tracked her and her friends all across the globe, captured and interrogated her, attacked her villiage, and contributed to the (brief) death of the person she was in love with? If that’s not compassion I don’t know what is.Â
And oh god I can’t talk about Katara without talking about Kataang. Her relationship with Aang is so beautiful I almost can’t handle it. They rely on each other, they draw strength from one another, and it’s glorious. They are the respective heart and soul of the show. That’s how close they are! Even if Aang is the main character, you just wouldn’t have ATLA without Katara.Â
The hate the fandom gives her just infuriates me. Although I’m sure they exist, I have yet to hear a legitimate reason for people to hate Katara. It’s all misogynistic bullshit with no sense or purpose. I might go into the absurdities of the reasons why people hate her another time, but not on this post.Â
Fuck you, she’s awesome.
