Review of ‘Map of the Soul: 7′
So, 7 took just a little bit longer to grow on me than the previous Persona, and I think that’s because I didn’t listen to it as intended. Just listening to the new songs, it seemed super mellow in comparison to their previous stuff. But once I listened to it all the way through, I realized that they released most of their harder songs on Persona, while they released their more relaxed meaningful stuff with 7.
Honestly, if there was one word I could use to describe this whole thing it would be: an offering. This album is, as RM stated, a tribute to their career and a gift to ARMY. Listen to this album and tell me it doesn’t sound like a fucking goodbye. Everyone knows things are about to change (we just don’t know the scope of it yet), and BTS literally offered us a souvenir to remember them by. ‘We are 7 now, with you’. ‘Tell us why you’re still here, why you’re still with us’. ‘We are bulletproof’. ‘Louder than bombs, I’ll sing’. ‘You’re my soulmate!’ ‘Bring on the pain, I’m ready’. Like, omg, how much clearer can they be? If they all fucking retired right now I’d say it was a perfect ending. I sincerely hope they don’t but maybe Suga wants to take a 3-year long nap. Let the kitty sleep for god’s sake.
Who was the standout of this album? Jimin, for fucking sure. I’ll admit it, he’s my wrecker, but he stole the fucking show. I mean, ‘Filter’? I didn’t need him whispering, ‘yes’ into my ear, but now I have it and IDK WHAT TO DO WITH IT.
Now, what was my favorite song? Listen, it shocked even me, okay? But it’s Jin’s single, ‘Moon’, (followed very closely by V’s ‘Inner Child’). Jin is a necessary part of BTS and it wouldn’t be the same without him. That being said, he’s never been my favorite member, in fact, he’s kinda always been the last on the list, you know? There’s always one member you forget in a group. In EXO, it was Kai. In BTS, it’s Jin. But his song on 7 is so fucking great. It’s a huge shift from ‘Epiphany’ which was just...made me want to bury my head in the sand with how emotional it was supposed to be. ‘Moon’ is just 1000x better, okay?
As for ‘ON’, I really liked it (the Sia version is fucking stupid, but whatever). I really liked the Kinetic Manifesto more than the actual MV, mainly because at least it made sense? Plus those drumline formations were on fire. The drone shots were so cool, and the choreo is awesome. It’s what really cemented Jimin as the hero of this comeback because you can just tell--you can see it in every line of his body that this kind of dancing was what he was made for, especially in the dance break. He’s out of this world phenomenal. Also, he ripped his pants in that mv, did you see it, XD?
As for the MV, idk wtf was going on, but I know I liked them not hiding Jungkoo’s tattoos anymore, and I would very much like to join the Cult of Suga, thanks. RM turned into Doctor Dolittle and Jimin kidnapped a small person? Who fucking knows, okay?
