to be fair, there IS something to be said about how no one cares about how entire civilizations and pieces of artwork have been stolen and destroyed due to colonialization, and yet as soon as notre dame burns everyone mourns
no one is saying ur not allowed to be upset. im incredibly upset about this happening because art history is such a huge interest of mine, but it’s kind of transparent when people only care about art made by white ppl getting destroyed
notre dame is burning.
this is ok.
it has happened before. it will happen again. it has been lost before. it will be lost again. and again. and again. and again. art and architecture are transient, and temporary, and 850 years may seem like a lot to the individual, who will live maybe 100 if they are very lucky and very healthy, but even the pyramids at saqqara have only existed for about 6000 years and that’s still not all that much, if you consider the grand scheme of things.
yes, this is terrible. as someone who is deeply religious and literally a professional historian with a focus on art and architecture, this is terrible. im mourning. im gutted. im horrified and upset and miserable. but.
it’s not over.
victor hugo wrote hunchback because notre dame du paris was in the process of collapsing and falling apart, and revitalized the entire world’s focus and love for this church, and that was not even 200 years ago. it led to it being renovated.
the roof has fallen in. the scars of fires are on its buttresses. the rose window has fallen out. the beams and piers have collapsed. the spire has toppled. the stones have suffered, and will suffer again, but it is not gone.
renovation work is essential. sometimes things collapse and burn and break and have to come back. it’s not a terrorist attack, it’s renovation, an accident, but we have so much evidence, history, carefully documented everything on one of the most studied places in the world.
it’s not the end.
Hey so, French person here. And also an ex History student. I’m here to say: Please listen to o.p. above.
Obviously everyone is shocked but here’s a few important key facts:
The roof is completely gone. Part of it dated back from the 13th century but the rest was from the 19th. The stone arch roof under the top roof is fine.
One of the three main stained glass rose windows has fallen out. Most of the other stained glass windows are okay.
The spire has fallen down and that’s the saddest part. BUT! It was in the process of being restored and the 16 statues that were there were removed just four days ago! So they’re fine.
The main structure is still here and nothing has “burned down” unlike what some people have been saying.
The “treasure” (sacred objects) is safe.
Notre Dame is still there. It’s just damaged. Almost nothing was lost today, and nobody was wounded either. It’s scary, but it’s gonna be okay.
Send help I’ve been laughing for 15 minutes the internet killed my sense of humor
I was expecting exactly that and was not disappointed
Just saw Before the Flood on Nat Geo and it was a great depiction of the reality of the climate situation today. But sometimes it can get really overwhelming seeing films and articles like this, and many feel they just don’t have the capacity to do anything. So here’s a list of some small changes you can make to help:
Become a vegeatarian. Agriculture contributes a lot to carbon and methane emissions between raising the cattle and providing cattle feed. If you can’t see cutting out meat entirely, try just cutting out red meat or cutting your meat consumption down slowly.
Use less energy in your home. Unplug appliances, chargers, lamps that aren’t in use. If possible, significantly cut back on what power is being used when away from your home for long periods of time. You may not directly control your energy source, but you can cut energy consumption.
Buy used clothes. In modern society, it’s extremely difficult to expect people to limit their closets to a few outfits. If you buy used clothing from a local thrift shop or secondhand store, you cut down on energy and resources used to produce an entirely new garment. Plus something old for one person can be something new and exciting for you.
Walk, use public transportation or carpool when possible. I know you can’t walk everywhere, especially when you don’t live in a walkable city with propoer infrastrucutre. But less private transportation means less cars on the roads, and thus less emissions.
VOTE FOR COMMUNITY LEADERS, MAYORS, SENATORS, CONGRESSMEN/WOMEN, PRESIDENTS OR LITERALLY ANY AUTHORITY FIGURE WHO UNDERSTANDS THE IMPORTANCE OF CLIMATE CHANGE EFFORTS AND DISCOVERING REAL AND VIABLE SOLUTIONS.
Promote a sustainable lifestyle. Let all your friends know what your doing. Your parents, grandparents, teachers, community leaders, pen pals. If it becomes normalized, it doesn’t seem like that big of a change right?
THESE ARE NOT SOLUTIONS TO CLIMATE CHANGE. These are just the simple ways that each person individually can adpot sustainable practices in their lives. It’s also important to realize that due to other factors, some people may not have the capacity to do these things, and that’s okay. Do what you can. And if this becomes normal, if more people decide, hey, this is an issue worth fixing, than we can work together to create a real solution.
to this day i am flat-out stunned by the way the pirates of the caribbean theme PERFECTLY evokes a jaunty swashbuckler riding atop the bowsprit of a magnificent—yet foreboding!—18th century galleon, from whose mainmast the jolly roger flaps spectacularly in a high wind. like? how’d you do it? some cellos? how.
Her self-reflection was no reflection at all. It was a shattered mirror. Something she had to piece together, over and over again. Memory by memory. Loss by loss. Wolf by wolf.
This was why, every night before she fell asleep, she peeled back her sleeve, traced the wolves, and said their names. Because somewhere in there—in those fragments of gone souls and memories—was Yael. Not chemicals, but essence. The real Yael.
