✃ – WITH THE SETTING sun the forbidding evening hours befell the glittering cityscape. Things that went bump in the night were no childish myth in the lands she once resided in. The enticement of magic was shrouded by beings unmatched in the living world. Not once had the origin of such creatures been questioned till now. Displacement was a harbinger of mental strain leaving many questions unanswered.
Saccharine chords died at their peak falling mute on the tip of her tongue when echoed in the nearing shadows. Terror rode rampant at the Garden’s edge just over the wall, a king crowned with bone and ash presiding over the departed. The Beast, a name befitting of the task one would find themselves burdened with not soon after encountering the damned being. If one was fortunate enough the heinous fiend only lived in ominous warnings rather than in the flesh.
Fortune evaded those cursed.
❝You can’t be here…You can’t!❞ Foolish protests of blind indignation were aimed at the horned silhouette. Such childishness was unbecoming but in the face of crippling fear the motherly warnings that frequently plagued her thoughts fell silent.
Denial was such a petty, mortal thing. Whether be it imminent doom, or a simple misfortune so much as looking to spoil their comfort, acceptance of the reality did not come so quickly to them. In the face of a harm well-known among her brethren, the people, and even the things dwelling in the muck and leaves, she too fell back upon this disbelief, not wanting of the reality.
Hell awaited her here.
The myth and the murmurs breathed. They were alive. He was the reality.
❝Yet, here I am.❞ he canted his head, ❝This troubles you.❞
And he was well aware.
She was as privy to his wiles as anyone else, but he didn’t need ignorance to bend one to his favour. Fear was key, and malleable to the right touch. His being there was enough to inspire the quake in her stance, and this was enough. Let her relay her warnings, let her preach the danger to her friends and strangers-- he cared not, for they all succumbed to the wanting of truth, to see with their own eyes.
This looming embodiment of the darkness that swelled in the heart, the lies like poison on a man’s tongue, moved soundlessly aside, rounding his visitor to all the better examine her.
❝You must be of the Unknown-- I don’t believe we’ve met.❞ at least, not formally, ❝How unfortunate you should find yourself here, and so far from home.❞
Misfortune favoured residents of the Unknown.

Though the answer doesn’t give way to much of even the slightest idea of what he’s encountered, it at least tells him that he’s not alone, and at most tells him that he should be afraid. He had been afraid of what had lurked in shadows barely unseen, but maybe knowing was no better.
The boy replies, a shroud of nervous hesitation hinted in his tone despite the attitude in his words. “That… that doesn’t answer my question. Who are you?”
“And what’s it to you what I’m doing out here?”
Upon closer inspection did those tolling bells draw some victory. He knew this face, this particular mold of flesh and blood as it had once before tread his woods, crossed his path. Though, a mind of far different persuasion commandeered its functions. So this was the poor creature whom his acquaintance donned their first meeting, having forced the former to relinquish their form.
Curiosity abounds, and the Beast did not react to the boy’s rebuke, only shying aside to start a circle about him.
❝There’s no need for such caution-- I can do you no harm.❞
He purposely skirted the inquiries, leaving only assumption to answer.
{ spectrator }
The echo of his name in the guise of a stranger ran a shiver down the boy’s spine– one which had little to do with the distinct chill which rolled in along the back of the light mist to shroud their surroundings. Between silhouettes of gnarled limbs and lengthy and bark-less trunks the miasma bled, as relentless in its assault as a heavy rainfall.
“I-it’s just me.” The thought to lie did come to mind, de-railed in the next instant by thought paid to the stutter which now rendered the boy’s tone meek and withdrawn. Lies spoke on a tongue too weak in the will to cleave neither shape nor form from frosty mistruths had no right to feign competence for the task. The creature would have no doubt seen through it with all the ease of pierced cellophane. And, although Norman was not yet convinced of the confidence others had in “honesty” as being “the best policy”, the mere thought of the truth turned his tongue to lead before it could ever manage to anoint his lips.
So briefly did silence become him, light eyes strayed down to regard the hand extended in anticipation. This wordless request he acquiesced with a foreseeable trace of reluctance as he passed off the handle, grown hot in his palm, to the custody of this towering stranger.
“I…I-I heard music coming from the woods.” Norman spoke again to fill the lull which had fallen between them. The relinquishing of the lantern accompanied the release of a breath he hadn’t known he had been holding, heart pounding in his ears as he made to further their conversation. “I wanted to know if what they were saying was true…” He ventured further to utter in a rush of great nerve.
“That…that something new had appeared in the forest– a creature no one had ever come by before. Th–…they’re calling you “The Beast”…?”
And now here, tales of him slither through the grapevine; word of mouth and whispers based on glances. It was gratifying to know he needn’t expend much effort to announce himself, as the gossip-mongering were more than happy to do so in his stead. A whiff of the strange and off went the talk like wildfire, spilling beyond the Sector’s borders and to the thick of the population, raking in the curious. And intelligence suffers to the thirst for knowing, as the Beast has found in his previous dealings with humankind.
The boy surrendered the Lantern without a fuss, and he curled his fingers about the handle, allowing it to roll and rest in his palm. This silhouette moved with a graceful linger-- every twist of a wrist, reach of the arm, an art. He set it down near and easing its glare upon the boy, the glow scantly kissing his features. There was little need of light to the darkness, after all. A twist of his great, antlered crown, and his heed was fixated on his little guest once more.
❝It seems word travels quickly in this realm.❞ the shadow remarked, a cant of his head marking the head of its furtherance.
❝So you planned to seek me out. Most would exercise more caution upon the rumour of an unknown lurking their woods.❞ he expected a party, three or more, but the long young man was more welcomed, ❝Tell me, Norman: Now that you have discovered the truth-- are you afraid?❞

✃ – A SONGBIRD’S MELODY, a pleasant linking of notes carried by the passing breeze. A defense mechanism against what lay beyond the shadows of the lamplight. Bustling roadways had grown sleepy, eerily quiet. With only her voice to accompany her through the darkness, each proceeding note grew fainter as more distance was crossed. The writhing of inky tendrils could be see out of the corner of her gaze but soon vanished once her attention had been guided towards the sight.
❝Cheese and crackers–❞ Jumping at the movement only to find nothing but the outline of her own small frame casted beside her, a sigh of relief fell from pink lips. Much too soon was composure regained as the haunting refrain of an operatic baritone could be heard as an answer call to the hymn sung earlier. Music to accompany a lawless being, far further from pure divinity than the charge of his presence led those uninformed believe.
Defiance fought its way onto petrified features. ❝St-Stay back!❞ A step was taken backward but luminous eyes shone like moons in the impending gloom, approaching in a slow menacing stride. The Beast was upon her.
It would appear a guest had fluttered her way into his midst; just another fly to decorate the proverbial web. This place flourished with naiveté just ripe for the picking, wandering to and fro about the Sector. The forest clearly had a pull, calling to those in want of a solace that listened, and daren’t talk back-- they were fish in a sea of leaves, but not all were privy to this ocean. The twists and turns could lead them astray if they weren’t sharp of wit.
Yes-- like moths to a flame.
And to this young stranger’s sweet little chirps, he would answer in contrast; a deep and woeful ballad to shame the most bereaved of operas. Its touch to the ear was velveteen, but all the while, whispering caution to your innermost fears. But of course, whether one acknowledged the warnings or not was another thing entirely. Few paid heed to their doubts for the sake of curiosity, and discovery. He knew human nature to be unwise, to most often follow their wants than needs, their desires than what would truly be best.
Such simple, trifling creatures.
Now then-- he knew that voice. He knew all who resided in the Unknown. And when he closed on her, after circling his prey through the darkened green, his song at last came to an end.
❝Come now, little bird. You needn’t be so guarded.❞ he held ground a few strides short of her, his shadow combating her radiance.

Without fail, his song seeped into the forest air at dusk; of silken tone and enticing the ear. He was content to glide his fingers o’er the brush, without so much as loosing a petal or leaf.

When he eventually came to consciousness, it was not in the place he’d been left– nor the body he had then occupied. Rather, it appeared yet another shift had overcome him on account of the oddity which swept relentlessly through the city. And yet, for all the care Bill paid…a body was but a body– a means to an end. Although he was shortly discovering that without the efforts intended to take care of it, like all tools…it began to rust.
“What the–” An arm lifted where he lay with intent to shield his eyes from the sun, cheek cushioned by a pleasantly verdant plot of grass. Only, tender and harmless pastures were not the only force of nature to pervade his immediate surroundings– a truth he became privy to mere moments to come.
Any efforts made to rise were stayed, golden hues falling to regard a devilish snare of branches winding their way about his form. So upon sight was his reaction immediate; limbs forgoing their weariness in attempts to free himself from trappings of roughly chiseled brambles and roots. And, in accompanying the sight, an inkling seated itself upon the edge of the inter-dimensional being’s subconscious which did reinforce the theory blossoming in his mind’s eye.
“M̦̮͖̏̕ᴏ̎̐̓ɴ́ͨͮ͆s̲̿ᴛ̭̩̺̿ͥ͑ᴇ̎̈ͨ̽ʀ̎̒̓ͣ̀ . How ᴅᴀʀ̶ᴇ you think you can do this to me.” Waspish with the weakness his human body did beget, the struggle to free himself to stand was by no means a meager effort. However, once he had it was with all the prior arrogance which applied to him; sheer stubbornness the only force which kept the demon from his knees.
“Show yourself!” This demand he issued to the dark, unwilling to abide such ill treatment without dispute. “I know you’re watching!”

❝Ahahahahaha--!❞
Whips of wind kicked up the ghosts of summer, lapping at the grass and off into the dark did ride the dead leaves-- and with it, carried a laughter; deep and basso, brimming with gusto. It would be heard long before he did acquiesce such discourtesies. No, he would remain melded with the night, one of its children, the shadows, circling the one-eyed demon now caged in this fleshy bag of mortality. Well now, that was his mistake, wasn’t it? He poked, he prodded for results, and, according to his felled confidence contained in such a vulnerable thing, he received more than he had bargained for.
His creations had begun their work to lace their grasp about his form, hungry for his exhaustion. Bravado hadn’t a part to play when its foundations were toppling. Had it been what he expected? Had it been all he wanted? With humanity came its weaknesses, and there were enough with which to scribe a novel. Every seam to wear thin, to tear, it was known, and susceptible to the slightest nick.
What fun, to see the lowest of his like-minded acquaintance! Where, oh where, was his bluster now?
❝What’s the matter?❞ he paused at the young man’s back, looming with a glare to shame the moonlight, ❝And here I thought you were looking forward to the experience.❞
Before his voice could be sourced, he moved again. In the cover of black he remained, where the advantage was his, and his alone.
❝I’m merely entertaining your desire.❞

When the Beast finally did speak, Norman found his gaze yet again drawn from the wash of the lantern across his bedding. Knees drew up to his chest to hearken that which the Beast came to admit with not even the scantest trace of reluctance. He was indeed alone, and with no sorrows to be attributed to this sobering knowledge. Norman had to wonder if it was at all a lonely existence, though thought better than to pry without relinquishing some knowledge of a similar strain in turn. After all, in the Beast’s own words one had to give sometimes in order to receive.
“I was on my own too.” The youth began, arms linked pensively about his knees as he spoke of the memory fresh in his mind. “No one really wants anything to do with a–” With a fr̕eak̴ like him.
“…S-sometimes I even thought I was better off that way. If no one alive wanted anything to do with me then…” He trailed off, a short breath punctuating this discouraging thought before on again he pursued.
“The dead always had something to say though. Even if no one else could hear them. I’m…not even sure they could hear one another.” This epiphany he reflected upon in reserved awe, before again to his company Norman’s gaze strayed. And, this time, subtly concealed was the inquiry the medium meant to imply, owing to the likeness they shared not in appearance– but in aura.
“People kept their distance…because they were afraid.” He voiced softly. “Because we’re different…”
So much woe for one little human, and he spilled it all unto the shadows blanketing his room.
Only this time, they answered.
He caged words yet to meet Norman’s own within a respectful silence, allowing for his worries to fill the lull enclosing the two. This was the promise accompanying ownership of the lantern he gifted to the boy-- an ear to listen, perhaps even a voice to aid and contend the doubt so obviously ruling his life. An outcast from whence he was stolen, the dead his sole familiar and ostracised from the living as a result; precisely the personality he sought to carry his Lantern. But in order to maintain this facade, he must offer consolation, and play the part.
The Beast, in a seamless glide through the dark, moved to his Lantern bearer’s side. Parting his cloak, a hand came to rest at the child’s shoulder to garnish the comfort soon to follow, slanting his posture to better level with the other.
❝Is that not the nature of human beings? They fear what they do not understand. Most... cannot fathom an idea that transcends what society has deemed normality.❞ and his hand lifted away with his retreat to a corner.
❝We are alike, you and I.❞

Norman wasn’t entirely sure what he had expected– certainly not for the Beast to break his oath. Yet even so, his appearance did manage to strip the boy of breath as he adjusted to sit cross-legged atop the sheets. Light eyes drifted upwards to regard the towering figure wrought of a darkness so black, his silhouette stood out ever slightly against the ebony backdrop of a shadowy scene. So upon taking in the sight did cerulean eyes drift from those a variant pastel in hue, his words arising slow and uncertain.
“I-I uh, I just…” From silence and again to it Norman’s words wavered. For in truth he had no motive behind the call he had put forth short of the pleasure of company– the likes of which he had yet to acclimate to the loss of. Nor, did he think, would he ever.
“You know a bit about me…but you haven’t told me much about yourself.” Again he spoke, the observation lain delicately as he continued to scrutinize the faint texture to the layer of sheets strewn beneath him. “I wanted to ask about the place you come from… A-are there others? Like you, I mean…”
‘Or are you alone too?’ The inquiry stood to be implied in the din which awaited the Beast to fill it.
An ounce of surprise scarcely disrupted the light in his gaze. If ever he were to be disarmed by something as trivial as words tuned to question, this would be the instance. Never before had any inquired of him beyond what they saw with their own two eyes, and in so doing, set into motion a different line of thought he hadn’t yet exercised. He was what he was, and he had been for years upon years-- there were no chapters to his story, nothing but what the tales haunting his forest and yonder wrote. That is to say: even the creature itself wasn’t certain of roots.
Alas, silence was wasted on this introspection, and the silhouette inclined its head toward the youth yet again.
❝None but me.❞ he said at last, and quite simply.
There’s only ever been one in memory; himself. He could grant honesty on this front without concern. And with that uttered, he attempted to balm the child’s concerns with a gentle reassurance.
❝But it does not matter.❞
Yes, he was alone. But he always had been better suited to the solitude.

Slumped on his stomach across the length of his bed, it was in silence that the boy regarded the bright glow of the lantern over which he had not-so-recently taken custody. Prior to the strange events the scientists had set in motion, he had come by the task of keeping it lit– a feat which had thus far given him little trouble. That said, the Beast’s end of the bargain Norman had yet to purpose; though for how much longer was a question which soon no longer need be applicable.
Given a sharp intake of breath to steady his resolve, the boy lifted his head from behind arms crossed over the sheets before him. Chin placed atop his forearms to enable speech, blue eyes drifted shut whilst he spoke to the name which haunted the distant woods of Sector oo6. “Beast…?” He spoke in spite of the feeling of stupidity which ran in tandem with hope. However, another breath he took in tentatively at first, pending the slow opening of blue eyes. “A-…are you here?”
waywardlit
The Dark Lantern.
It beckoned to him no matter the plane, or distance. He was bound to follow wherever it may travel, never far shot of its gleam. Its significance measured beyond appearances, for within its chambers was guarded something precious-- something far more important than any truly knew. Certainly, the Unknown carried whispers of he and his Lantern, that only he who bore it could be the Beast of their fears. Oh, what life it gave him! To skew their beliefs in whatever slight a way...
He’d entrusted his precious Lantern in the care of a boy racked with doubt. A kindly young man, but burdened with far too many worries. A vulnerability suited for moulding to his intended purpose--- and, as expected, the perfect lure. And that shadow, while the child posed his yearning to the glare of the Lantern, drifted by the hut’s window, breaching the door in complete silence. In a show of decency, he did pull it shut following entry, and tread a mute approach to the foot of the bed, not even a creak to announce his presence.
“A-…are you here?”
The need imbuing his tone was almost touching, and the Beast at last graced Norman’s plea in a voice like velvet.
❝Of course--
I said I would be, didn’t I?❞

“What the heck…” Most adults would probably advise against a walk through the woods at night. Though, Dipper was never one to heed one of those warnings, anyway. The boy muses to himself as he kneels over a broken branch laying at the foot of a twisted tree that bled a thick and grimy oil.
But it’s then that he hears something, louder than a rush of wind but quieter than footfalls. Someone– something is very close.
“Who’s there?”
❝Me.❞ a chill rode these words through the dark, seeking whom next to discomfort.
As luck should have it, another had wandered their merry, witless way into his clutches. A pair of eyes, hued in a cold glow, would accompany the creature’s answer, boring into his young guest from the shroud of shadow within which he was embedded. A mite more focus would grant one a towering silhouette, a crown of twisted branch reaching from its skull, but nothing more.
