He wasn’t any stranger to bluntness, his his harshly honest nature had gotten him into enough trouble for being insensitive, but even he thought that the woman’s words were a bit much.

Cassie had been one of Lizzie’s best friends and losing her was hard on her, but she knew that Dalton needed someone to blame in that moment so she had to be the strong one and take it. At the end of the day, he was the one who lost his wife and the mother of his children, and even without Cassie, Lizzie had Daniel who was there with her every night helping her whenever Dalton pushed a little too hard. Since then, he’d mellowed a lot with her to the point of them actually being friends over the past couple of months which Lizzie was relieved about, but not as relieved as she was to see that he was still in one piece and looked like he was fine for the most part. “Dalton, do you think I’d be this panicky coming down here if I knew the person’s name wasn’t Dalton Bashford?” she asked, hand on hip as she stared him down. “Okay I understand not wanting to lose the phone and all those pictures, but can you please get a basic new one that is functioning and just hold on to both so that I don’t panic when situations like this happen?” she asked, sighing as she sat on the foot of his hospital bed. “We just heard there was a plane crash with a group of our surgeons on board… one of them was my brother, Derek… He’s missing.” 

‘ well, i guess not, but that’s still one of my own, can you try and find out if they’re okay? please, for me. ’ he nodded in agreement about the phone, he would sort something to avoid situations like this one. dalton’s face fell as the next words came from her mouth, plane crash, brother, missing. he fought the urge to get up and wrap his arms around his friend, she would have a fit if he got up right now. instead he held his arms out for her to come down to his level so he could envelope her in a tight hug. ‘ everything will be okay, lizzie. i promise. ’

Franklin had been heading up to the office whenever he heard the board member speaking. Generally, he had a lot of respect for people on the hospital board, but this woman? She was speaking so terribly of the doctors that were missing. “Are you fucking serious?” He asked, eyebrows lifted, mouth agape. “You’re serious? You don’t care about the doctors that we might be losing in a plane crash because of the money and paperwork?” He couldn’t believe someone could be so terribly vile. Even his father would have feigned caring. “Go tell that to the reporters outside, to the family members of the victims of this crash. Or you could absolutely go fuck yourself with a spiked dildo and hope it makes you feel something”

talia almost laughed as the man spoke, people in this hospital were so uptight. she was very much allowed to access her right to freedom of speech and clearly so was he as the creative insults flew from him. ‘ wow, can’t say i’ve heard that one before, a spiked dildo huh? sounds fun. you can fuck me with it if you want, looks like you’d be happy to cause me some pain. ’

“Oh really, you don’t care?” Lucy said, feigning surprise as she tilted her head. “I couldn’t tell from the everything about you.” She really didn’t know why she felt the need to waste her time. It wouldn’t get anywhere. It was like arguing with a brick wall, except she generally had less of a deserve to hit a brick wall with her fist. “Honestly, reputation-wise, I would be more worried about a hospital that’s board members have an indifference to human life. Not to mention the kind of impact that could have on the staff, knowing that their lives seem to mean to people at the top. That would be a pretty big concern of mine, if I wasn’t looking for an uprising.” Lucy folded her arms across her chest. “And, by the way, it’s generally not a great sign to follow ‘I hope everyone’s alive’ with a but.” 

‘ and how about surgeons who have no respect when talking to people? i’m not so sure you’re much better than me with the way that you’re talking to me right now. ’ talia shrugged with a smile, she was honestly just humouring the woman at this point, she didn’t really have time for all this. ‘ you know i’m sure you’ve got a job to do but instead you’re here acting as a spokesperson for those doctors, would they even appreciate you speaking on their behalf? ’

Gianna knew that was definitely a fact. She worried about him when he went into those buildings. They were just friends but it always felt like they had a special connection. She just worried and it was more or less for the fact of his kids. “Okay, stay safe in there. Love you.” Gi blew him a kiss a thing she tried to do in this sort of situation. 

he acted as if he were catching her kiss before blowing one back with a smile. ‘ you know it, princess. i’m always safe don’t you worry. love you right back. i’ll see you later, you’d better bring some wine, i think we’ll need the best. ’ he blew another kiss before walking away towards the building.

“Are you for real?” Benjamin asked, a deep frown setting on his face as he listened to the other woman. He didn’t know who she was - and frankly didn’t really care - but to speak of the doctors like that was something he wouldn’t stand for. “These doctors might lose their lives. Has your pile of paperwork got a price for that? For the loss those families will feel? Because until you know just how much money you’re crying over, I suggest you show some damned respect.”

‘ they might and still they may be perfectly okay. it’s all the same to me. i’m allowed to have an opinion on a matter and speaking of respect i don’t think that you’re showing me very much right now so aren’t you just as bad? ’ she raised an eyebrow in his directly and mockingly matched his frown.

when addison had found out about the plane crash she had been in the emergency room, helping with a pregnant patient who had been brought in from the building collapse. as soon as she heard and her patient was stable enough, she decided to make her way up to find john and see if he had any news since he was a lawyer and figured they’d be the first person to get this type of news other than charlotte or the chief. “you know- i’d watch your tone with me.” addison said looking at the younger member of the board, who seemed to have no empathy for the people on the plane or their families. “it’s going to cost you a lot more money if you keep talking like that and pretending that the amount of paperwork is more inconvenient for you, than the lives of the 10 people who could be extremely hurt right now.” 

talia rolled her eyes with a slight shake of her head. ‘ watch my tone? lady, i think you’re the one who’s tone needs watching, the amount of paperwork is more inconvenient to me. i don’t know these people, i have no feelings towards any of them so i really am not bothered either way if they make it back home or not. ’

“then you’re lucky the money isn’t coming out straight from your pocket.” john spat out, already annoyed at the woman. he wasn’t exactly the most empathetic person, probably the least one in the legal department but there were limits. “not to mention, as a member of the board, you should give a shit about your own people. if only for your reputation. the last thing we need is word getting out that the board of the hospital doesn’t care. and you can rest assure when push comes to shove, i will not care about throwing you under the bus.”

talia loved to see people who she had annoyed, they all acted in the same way, like she was some kind of monster but really how much did they care themselves? ‘ i don’t think you have the right to tell me how i should be feeling because honestly you don’t look or seem like a trained psychologist, i can tell in fact that you’re the worst of the worst, a lawyer. you’re dripping in confidence, it’s disgusting. ’

“I’m an OBGYN, so I have to come in at weird hours… just so happened that I was still here when the building collapsed, so I figured another few hours couldn’t hurt, right? It hasn’t been too bad so far… except for this one guy who keeps trying to be sent back out there and doesn’t show any signs of quitting it” She smiled at him as she kapt bandaging up his hands, doing it so that he could still move them if he had to but it would keep any germs or bacteria away from his healing wounds. She didn’t know what to say when he talked about his family, and his wife. “I’m so sorry Dalton,” she said, knowing that what he’d been through was not only complicated but completely painful, and she wished that there was something that she could do, but all she could do in that moment was to be there and show him that she wasn’t running away from him because of the story about losing the mother of his children. Arianna understood why the flirting would have been difficult for him given it had only happened two years ago, and she just shook her head as she thought about it, giving him a friendly smile as she updated his chart. Once the chart was done, she geared up for commenting on what he was saying about going back. “I know that it still hurts… thank you for sharing all of that with me.” she meant it, Arianna was sure that particular conversation didn’t come easy to Dalton so it meant even more that he felt like he could share that with her. “For what it’s worth… and I didn’t know her so feel free to ignore what I’m saying if you want to– but the way you talk about her now? You may not have gotten to get married but I’m sure she knew how much you loved her… that’s the most important thing. She was lucky to have you,” she didn’t know how they went from flirting to this but it was so easy to talk to Dalton, Arianna felt herself leaning further into the conversation until she was in completely.  

dalton was feeling things that he was sure he hadn’t for a long time. he barely opened up to anyone and yet here he was telling her everything about the only woman he had ever loved. he reached out with his good hand and touched the soft skin of her face with a smile. ‘ you know for what it’s worth i think she would’ve really liked you. you’re the exact kind of person that she would’ve wanted to be around, you and her would have got on beautifully. ’ he paused with a soft sigh. ‘ and i think that she would be happy if i were to move on with someone who has a heart like yours. despite barely knowing you for an hour, i know that you’re the exact kind of person that she would want in mine and our children’s lives and life is too damn short to really stop yourself from doing exactly what you want. ’ he wanted to kiss her but he was stopping himself from doing it, he didn’t want to push it too far when he wasn’t sure himself what he wanted to happen, he just knew that he had the overwhelming urge to be close to her, and to fall completely and utterly in love with her.

She didn’t know anyone on the plane but everyone in the hospital knew each other on some level. They were friends, husbands, wives, brothers etc. Even if they weren’t they were likely in danger and deserved far more than being dismissed because of paperwork. “I’d really suggest changing your attitude before you talk to someone else.”

‘ hm...probably just a bitch to be honest. but you don’t get the job done by being nice. ’ talia shrugged her shoulders as she pulled out her phone to see if there was any update on any situation, nothing. ‘ well, i’d really suggest not talking to a member of the board like that... ’

Put it out there and not just in your head.” Gianna loved his kids and she would always try to her best to be there if they needed her. She couldn’t imagine what it was like to go through what they had. She pointed back at him as in a you be safe. “It’s always a yes. I’m sure this is going to be a long day though.” 

‘ oh it’s going to be the longest day. ’ dalton agreed with a frown, he loved his job but events like this made him seriously reconsider his life choices. why had he decided to come into a job that was so dangerous? why was he putting his life at risk every day when he had two kids at home that had already lost one parent? he didn’t have the answers but he couldn’t see himself doing anything else. ‘ i’ll text you okay? ’

Get over it. Lucy couldn’t remember when she last felt this angry. Everything that had been building up over the last few weeks with Garrett leaving, now a disaster and missing plane…she felt like taking her smug attitude and tossing it through a window. “I’m sure you could, but, would probably require too much paperwork.” Lucy retorted. “About my job, I do actually care. I, just like all of the doctors on the plane you have no problem blowing off, took an oath. To do no harm. And that’s…no harm to people, by the way. Not bank accounts. It also says to stand with your colleagues, so you’ll excuse me if I get a little tense listening to anyone who would so cavalierly brush off a few lives. But this, right here, this is my job.” 

‘ you know i don’t care, right? i don’t care about your friends, i don’t care about the oath that you took, right now all i care about is how bad this plane crash is making this hospital look. i care about the reputation of this place. who is really going to want to go to a hospital that allowed their doctors on a plane for that plane to crash? the answer to that is no one. ’ talia couldn’t even begin to imagine the lawsuits that were going to come from this which was just more stress for her and her team. ‘ the hospital would be in ruins financially. ‘ i sincerely hope everyone is alive and well but there are more important things to think about here. ’

Lucy was standing nearby, practically ready to break off an edge of the counter she was standing at. She wished it was the exhaustion. The overwhelming emotion of the last few days finally getting to her. But, alas, her ears were not playing tricks on her. She tried not to turn around, but some other force was taking control. She tossed down the files in her hand with force, spinning around to walk up to the other woman. “A little insensitive, don’t you think? Considering nine doctors, nine of our doctors from this hospital are currently missing, god knows where. But, hell!” She said, raising her shoulders. “Who cares about that when your bank account is concerned.” Her eyes narrowed. “There’s one thing disgusting here, and it isn’t the stack of paperwork.” Lucy said with a huff. 

talia didn’t even stop her eyes from rolling as the other woman spoke. she folded her arms and raised an eyebrow at the other woman. maybe it was insensitive but she wasn’t overly fussed about that. she wasn’t here to be liked, she was here to do her job whether people liked that or not. ‘ oh please, get over it. ’ talia shook her head with a scoff. ‘ you know i could have you fired, right? so if you don’t care about your job, please do continue. ’

“Sweet until they set their minds to something… then there’s no stopping them.” she said, laughing a little and looking down as she put her phone back in her lab coat, “– so I guess in that way they really are like me.” she said, proud of Elena and Kenna for being as headstrong as they were, even if it meant owning up to the fact that they probably got it from her. “Look, Dalton. I understand that. The people here are like family too so I’m sure that if something was going on that needed us all, I’d be fighting to be there for them all. But if I let you go and there’s something else going on that we weren’t sure about or didn’t see, its going to be too late and you’re going to be risking yourself going into an already precarious situation. I don’t want that for you, and I definitely don’t want that for the two kids that love you and are waiting for you to come home tonight,” She wasn’t about to let it happen, and the way she looked him straight in the eye as she said all of that was her attempt at showing that. Grateful that he seemed to be cooling down from insisting that she should let him go, she looked at the selfie of them on his phone and smiled in approval, “it’s actually a very good picture– burnt hands and all.” she said, before he mentioned his kids’ mom. She didn’t know the whole story but all he needed to mention was that it was complicated for her to just smile at him kindly and nod. “You don’t have to explain– at the very least your flirting made me feel a little better about my Hospital Hour 7 hair,” she started, handing him back his phone. “But really I think that I’ve added another reason why you’re not going anywhere until I’m sure you’re okay. I doubt the mother of your children would be very happy about me letting you go and risk your welfare so that you can save others. There are people who need you to come home tonight so since your kids’ mom isn’t here to insist on you staying put, I’m here doing just that.” she said, not caring that she was taking full responsibility of whatever happened to this particular fireman from here on out. “And if things get… less complicated, you have my number. And the world’s greatest contact picture.” she said softly, squeezing further up his arm as a kind gesture to show him she was there for him. 

dalton felt bad when he watched her face, he was glad at least that she had felt good when he was flirting with her. ‘ you’ve been here seven hours? well i honestly wouldn’t have been able to tell, you really are beautiful, arianna and i have to say your bedside manner is impeccable but i sort of hope you don’t treat everyone like this. ’ he smiled a sort of sad smile as she spoke again. he would love to use her number, to ask her on a date, to see her under different circumstances but the pure guilt he felt just from flirting with her was holding him back. ‘ my...girlfriend i guess you would call her, the mother of my children, died after giving birth to my son two years ago. she was the love of my life, i had a ring but the timing had never been right and then she got pregnant with dalton jr and i vowed to myself that i would propose when she got out of the hospital, only she never got to come home. i didn’t get to ask her to be my wife. i wasted so much time. almost twenty years we spent together and to begin with marriage was just a bit of paper, it wasn’t important to either of us...but if i could go back knowing what i know now i’d have married her straight away. ’
