UK peeps: help oppose gov changing copyright law in favour of AI scrapers, see the guide for help in contacting your MP, the consultation group, your rep (if you have one for works you make), and how to complete the consultation form
Introduction This document is intended to be an all-encompassing guide on actions you can take to speak out against the UK’s proposed plans
Here’s to 2023, a year of as many little courageous kindnesses as possible. ♥️
To a year of kindness in 2024
Bringing this back for 2025
In all my life, no one has managed to explain to me convincingly how this economic system is supposedly the best and only viable option when:
it puts personal gain ahead of our collective well-being, teaching our children that competition is the driving force of society, leading to symptoms like selfishness, fear, mistrust, anxiety and depression
it allegedly requires billionaires as well as hand-to-mouth paupers in order to function, creating a huge and increasing disparity of personal wealth between a rich minority and a poor majority
it can only be maintained through non-stop growth, although we already produce too much of just about everything, waste a good chunk of it and even pay some sectors (e.g. agriculture) to destroy part of their yield
it damages nature beyond repair and ruins many people's lives through poor living conditions and a toxic race for material possessions
it mortgages our future by borrowing and spending money we do not even have, with every nation in the world in ever-climbing debt, and the entire planet indebted collectively (to whom?)
well said. it's a completely nonsensical situation. it's embarrassingly stupid. and i feel the only way anyone can say it's good is if they willingly ignore or are just simply ignorant of reality and the circumstances humanity is in collectively.
Tfw growing up everyone your age doesn’t relate to you because you seem “too old” but then once you’re an adult no one your age relates to you because you seem “too young”.
“Too old” and “too young” are both just people picking up on the autism.
My father is a classic layabout lazy bastard. He's the guy that people try to stereotype people on benefits as when they call them "dole bludgers". Sits in a filthy house all day whining that his wife won't clean it up, gets a great idea for a new business every few months and gives up after two weeks when it becomes clear that starting a business is hard, does everything he can to avoid doing a single scrap of work in life, uselessly drags his feet when the government forces him to actually do some.
Or at least, he was, until about three years ago, when he was sent off to do mandatory Work for the Dole at a volunteer organisation. He'd done a lot of Work for the Dole in the past, of course, and like most people who are forced to do a shitty job under the threat of starvation, was neither enthusiastic nor particularly useful. But in this particular place, he was given a job that he could do better than anyone else (he was one of 2 men working with a legion of elderly women, and the only person able to easily haul around the heavy goods that the organisation works with). He quickly found himself with a job he could understand, he could see the clear utility in, and that his coworkers greatly valued him for. He started arriving on time every day, putting in the effort, getting shit done. He started caring about the results. And when his Work for the Dole time was up, he kept volunteering.
He's one of two people paid to work in that warehouse now (the other person being the manager), and he's a lynchpin of activity there, their sole regular and reliable source of physical labour. When he takes holidays, they have to plan around it, because his consistent hard work has become such a critical asset to their work. And he's not taking nearly as many holidays as he should -- he works extra unpaid hours, lifts loads that are somewhat heavier than he should be lifting, shoulders the work of others when they need breaks, and we all have to urge him to take more days off for his health since he's not a young man any more. For my entire life this man has been a pile of old mud in the shape of a human, and the instant he found a job that fulfils his needs, he won't fucking stop. He's gonna die in that warehouse and die happy.
let's recap what we've learned about the United States in the last few days.
things that are terrorism:
allegedly shooting a healthcare CEO whose company generated more pure profit (not revenue, profit) in a year than the GDP of 94 countries, exclusively by denying coverage to people who pay for it
a 42-year-old mother of 2 using the wrong combination of 7 words during a heated conversation with a call center employee at a health insurance company who was in the process of denying her health coverage.
things that are not terrorism:
mass shooting in a Black church to incite a race war
going to a BLM protest specifically to kill protestors
a neo-nazi running over a crowd of people, killing a woman
targeting and killing 23 latinos in an el paso, texas walmart
killing 12 people in a theatre, shooting 58 others, rigging your apartment with explosives
a QAnon groyper killing 7 and shooting ~50 at a 4th of July parade
killing 3 people and shooting several others at a Planned Parenthood in defense of the unborn
stalking someone relentlessly and then killing them and their child despite months of the victim making police reports
any one of the 1,200 murders committed by US police yearly, the vast majority being minorities
tightening your border while ~100 immigrants (including children) drown every year in the Rio Grande
United Healthcare killing an unnknowable number of elderly people by using faulty AI to deny medically necessary coverage
Aetna killing a woman by refusing to cover her cancer care
Blue Cross killing a 6-year-old by denying her appendicitis surgery
Cigna killing a 17-year-old child by denying her liver transplant
the pharmaceutical industry killing half a million people with opioids in the name of producing revenues in 2023 that rivaled the GDPs of countries like Spain, Mexico, and Australia.
the United States killing 45,000 people a year because they can't access health coverage
make sure you keep this guide handy the next time you find yourself interacting with your insurance company or any other millionaire, billionaire, or an individual who is part of a protected class such as a CEO or president of a corporation.
Don’t forget mass destruction of actual government property and threatening to kill active members of government…also not terrorism apparently (but only if you’re white)
Hot take: this is the point where EVERYONE should say “deny defend depose” to ANY insurance person. Flood the justice system with absurdity so they are forced to reckon with the burden of truth. Highlight the hypocrisy of a system hell bent on “justice” when CEOs get to play judge, jury, and executioner. Make the bigots uncomfy and those complicit culpable. Call out cops for being shitty. Advocate for people in jail for addiction. Be a nuisance and a reason for change
Fuckin gottem boys
how did I guess this account was a bot? 1: didn't actually address anything in the main post 2: username is three random words stuck together & a default pfp 3: immediately asks to go to dm's
Take this as a huge fucking sign. They are paying for bots to sow "empathy" for the 1% leeches among us poors. It is IMPORTANT to them that you are not only blind to the evils they cause but would also defend them when they would kill you in the street for a dollar. Do Not Fucking Believe Them. Your anger and rage against these rich assholes is your most important weapon.
so, many of you have probably seen news about one of the first recorded severe case of HPAI (avian flu) in humans.
a lot of you who follow me are birders or inatters or adjacent. hence, a lot of you guys have birdfeeders.
from a rehab worker of almost 3 years: Disinfect your goddamn feeders. not only for HPAI but other diseases, such as avian pox, and for the safety of the birds
and of course, heres how!
the building blocks of this is off the backs of the violence against anti-pipeline protest.
This isn't the first time the state has used terrorism charges for things that do not fit. Even more ludicrous is the 23 terrorism charges put on forest protectors trying to stop cop city in Georgia last year. Apparently sitting in a forest is an act of terrorism now.
The excessively punitive, overreaching charges should be dropped and must not set a precedent.
