to understand the aggregate difference in quality between fan fiction and a book you can buy in the store all you need to do is look at the number of people thanked in the acknowledgements section of nearly any novel. people posting on ao3 are less likely to produce carmen maria machado’s especially heinous or xiaolu guo’s call me ishmaelle not because there’s something intrinsically different from fan fiction about these works but because they were produced with significant time and support. if fan fiction were written by people expected to devote a job’s worth of hours to it who always did multiple drafts incorporating feedback from a range of peers before submitting for publication and the bottom 90% were filtered out before it even became available then it. would simply on the whole be better. that’s literally it we don’t need to invent other reasons
