there’s a reason people talk about elliot page coming out more than they talk about the latest transphobic hate group in britain. there’s a reason people talk about how to spot and avoid antisemitic memes more than they talk about your list of hate crimes committed on hannukah. its not because they don’t care about those issues, it’s because humans literally aren’t equipped to handle the sheer amount of horror we’re subjected to every day. don’t guilt people for that.

I was going to just put a meme here and go about my evening but not before i address this phrasing here. i won’t call you names or anything. that would be immature of me. so ,,, here it goes

first of all: katara is not a prize to be won. katara shouldn’t be portrayed as someone’s reward for “saving the world” and it’s sad you have that same mentality bryke did. second of all: aang didn’t save the world by himself—it took the accumulated efforts of the entire gaang to put an end to the 100 year war, not just aang. this idea that aang did it all by himself is ,, not it. third of all: if the idea of zutara makes you think of aang’s feelings getting hurt, and his feelings alone, that’s also not it. a relationship is supposed to be about two (2) people, and the fact that so many people only seem to care how aang will feel rubs me the wrong way. fourth thing: i prefer zutara over kataang for a number of reasons. narratively speaking, zutara is leagues above kataang. from parallels (painted lady/blue spirit, sun and moon, water and fire, lost mothers, etc), the mutual exchanges of support they give each other, the tension, the beautiful development they have just in general. there’s a lot of reasons, basically. last thing: i like aang. i just wish his development wasn’t stunted in season three (or, rather, the season two finale where him getting rid of his attachment to katara in order to master the avatar state is dropped). I see so much more potential for both katara and aang. not just katara.

This is a "plein air" painting which means I set up my easel right across the street of this Chase bank in my city and painted it like it had caught fire. The police questioned me on the spot. Three weeks later Homeland Security was knocking on the door to my home. The question they kept asking me was "Do you hate these banks?" I can honestly say yes.

And I just think this is the greatest artist statement I’ve ever read.

10 to 12 year olds are great because they mostly have adult patterns of thinking and speaking but they're still children and haven't hit puberty yet so they'll say things like "Spinach doesn't quite suit my palate." in a very high voice while they're wearing a Spongebob backpack.

I think that's why a lot of fantasy adventure stories are about 10 to 12 year olds, quite frankly. They're still children and think like children but they're right on the edge of taking the dive into puberty and are just figuring out what to do with all this knowledge and experience that they've acquired over the last decade. They might be getting crushes for the first time. They might not but still be aware that their peers are getting crushes.

When an 11 year old gets thrown headfirst into a fantasy world they have the ability to take care of themself but don't have quite enough experience to do it well per se. They can talk like an adult, and to some extent think like an adult, but they're not quite there yet. By now they probably have experience with death in one way or another. They know what high stakes are but can't accurately figure out what's really important in the grand scheme of things.

That's why a 12 year old is a good subject for a fantasy story. Not because a real 12 year old should be put in such a horrible situation, but because real 10 to 12 year olds need some reassurance. They're about to get plunged into a world of unknown that they've been told about. Puberty, high school or secondary school, heartbreak, more people in their life changing or leaving or dying. Adult responsibilities looming in the distance that might be feeling real for the first time.

Can they do it? Well, yes. Every human that has lived to adulthood has done it before them. But if they have a character to grow up and face this new complicated and fantastical world with them then sometimes it might be a little bit easier.

Do you remember being 11 or 12 years old? Reading to survive? Not everyone did but if you did then maybe you remember all of this. It was kind of scary and confusing even if you'd never admit it to yourself. Even a couple of years after the fact at the start of high school the worries of 10 to 12 year olds start to feel trivial, but they aren't.

White people can't have internalized racism, that's just being racist. Straight people can't have internalized homophobia, that's just being homophobic. Etc etc etc. The entire point of these terms is to describe when oppressed people hate themselves I swear to god words mean things sometimes
