Today starts another round of severe weather across much of the central plains states. Severe weather, including large hail, damaging winds, and a few tornadoes can be expected. Make sure your notifications are up to date.

Chicago area under a High Risk of severe storms this afternoon.  The primary threat will be very strong winds but tornadoes will also be possible with some of the stronger storms. 

Residents should be paying close attention to the weather this afternoon.

A major severe weather outbreak is looking likely from Saturday through at least Monday across the plains states into the mid-Mississippi valley.  Currently it looks like the Sunday and Monday will be the days with the main tornado risk but all modes of severe weather will be possible each of these days.

SPC Day 1 Outlook

Severe weather, tornado, thunderstorm, fire weather, storm report, tornado watch, severe thunderstorm watch, mesoscale discussion, convective outlook products from the Storm Prediction Center.

There is a moderate risk of severe weather including tornadoes across the plains today. The greatest risk for tornadoes appears to be across Oklahoma into southeast Kansas.

A severe weather outbreak including tornadoes is looking likely from Monday through Wednesday of next week.  Please stay tuned as we will be updating this situation over the next couple days.

The advanced snowfall prediction models currently give a 60% chance of at least 8 inches of snow across a large chunk of Kansas.  This is the same area that received between 8 and 14 inches just 3 days ago.

The next winter storm is moving on to the west coast currently and there are already winter storm and blizzard watches up for areas of the plains. Stay tuned as the track of this system evolves.

Significant Winter Storm

I very strong winter storm will affect the central and southern plains over the next couple days.  Very heavy snow will be possible across Kansas into Iowa and severe weather will be possible along the the gulf coast states.

Amazing video from the Hattiesburg, MS tornado over the weekend.  There were 63 injuries and around 300 homes damaged or destroyed. Our thoughts are with those affected by this strong tornado.

The first bands of heavy precipitation are starting to move into the NYC metro area. Over a foot of snow possible in New York with up to 3 feet in Boston.

Severe weather including tornadoes are possible today across the lower Mississippi valley. Make sure your notification settings are up to date and follow media outlets as the day progresses.

There is a moderate risk of severe weather today across the northern gulf coast.  Tornadoes will be likely including some that may be strong and long-tracked.  

In addition to the severe weather threat, heavy snow will be possible across Oklahoma and into Arkansas.

There is a chance of severe weather across the southern Mississippi valley today.  The primary threats will be high winds and isolated tornadoes.  Please make sure your weather alert settings are up to date.

In addition, blizzard like conditions are possible across the central plains from Kansas through Iowa through tonight.  Please use caution when traveling in this area.

An isolated tornado threat will continue across central Florida today. There were 10 confirmed tornadoes across the south yesterday with minimal damage and no injuries.

Another Noreaster is currently ravaging the areas hit hard by super storm Sandy a little over a week ago.  Just as people are getting back to normal there have already been power outages reported on Long Island and some flooding of low lying areas in New York and New Jersey.

The Weather Channel has named this storm Athena which is the first time they've used their new naming convention for winter storms. Their goal in this is to more easily identify and discuss winter storms.  The effectiveness of this will likely be measured as this winter progresses.

The Noreaster is projected to slowly move up the coast over the next 24 hours and will dump rain, sleet, and snow along the coast with up to 6-10 inches of snow possible in the interior sections.  Winds will be gusting to 60+ mph along the coast causing additional flooding and beach erosion of the areas just hit by Sandy

Sandy Transforming Into Frankenstorm

Hurricane Sandy is maintaining a path which will bring it on shore in New Jersey sometime late Monday night.  The hurricane will rapidly become extratropical as it combines wil a powerful winter cold front.

Sandy's central pressure is currently at 951MB which puts it in line with the strength of many category 4 storms even though it's winds are that of a category 1 storm.  Sandy is a massive storm and will slow down as it moves on shore.

The primary threats currently appear to be:

Storm Surge

Flooding

Wind

Storm surge will be the worst on the north side of the storm including northern New Jersey, Long Island, and the New York metro area.  

With the amount of energy available to Sandy and its slow movement, many areas will likely see upwards of 10 inches of rain causing both flash flooding and river flooding concerns.  

Finally, wind damage will be a possibility with Sandy as she initially comes on shore.  There could be a full 24 hours of winds gusting to 85 mph in the New York and Philadelphia metro areas.  

People in low lying and coastal areas should really be considering moving inland and to higher elevations to ride out this storm.
