5 years. On this day 5 years ago I underwent a prophylactic double mastectomy to reduce my risk of breast cancer from 90% to <5%. I am BRCA1 positive. I inherited a gene mutation that puts me at high risk for breast cancer. My mother was first diagnosed with breast cancer at the same age I am today.
1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. 55-65% of women with the BRCA1 mutation will develop breast cancer before the age of 70.
Men are also at risk for breast cancer. Did you know that men also carry the BRCA gene? Men who carry the BRCA gene developed 8x as many cancers than the general population.
The BRCA mutation is also linked to an increased risk in other types of cancer, like ovarian and pancreatic. 44% of women with the BRCA1 mutation will develop ovarian cancer by 80. My ovarians will be removed by the time I am 35.
Talk to your doctor about your family history and possible genetic risk. Early detection is key. 40% of women discover cancer through self-exams. Join the trend- #Feelitonthefirst and do your self-exams every month on the first.
5 years ago I decided that I wasn’t going to wait for breast cancer. The journey has brought a lot of struggles, mentally and physically. And while this year has presented many new challenges, this memory today reminds me that I 𝐂𝐀𝐍 do hard things and that I 𝗪𝐈𝐋𝐋 make it through them.

I have spent the last two weeks stressed and saddened by the current economic situation. I tell you, my mom currently works two jobs to support me who travel every week to a different city to study (biochemical engineering), and now with the coronavirus situation I don't study and she does not work (quarantine), It is very sad because the money saved is running out and we could not pay the rent for our house, so a friend of hers offered to lend us her own.
It is too sad to live with things that are not yours, all because of the terrible pandemic (covid-19) that does not allow us to go out and work and be able to pay our bills.

i have been having an anxiety crisis for the last few hours because of my situation, guys this is not something to attract attention, if I really publish this and ask for your help in messages, I am very embarrassed, but it is something that is in my hands to do because I do not I can go out and work (plus they won't give me a job) and earn money to pay my rent and my support bills. I know there is little chance that Taylor will see this, but i am so stressed and sad that I do not lose hope.

Haven’t been on here in ages.
I’ve spent so much time studying and trying to get ready for all my dental hygiene board exams. I know there are worse things going on in the world and others are struggling but I just have to vent. I’ve wanted to be a dental hygienist for SO long. I’ve put all my blood, sweat and tears into school. Every waking moment is spent studying, prepping for exams, seeing patients. I was so excited to literally be WEEKS away from graduating. And now it’s gone. With no new dates or possibilities in sight. I’ve spent most days being positive and reminding myself this is to keep us ALL healthy and it is out of my control but sometimes I just want to cry.

I am so thankful to read these diary entries. 13 years ago I was a freshman in high school struggling with life when I stumbled upon taylor’s music. She’s changed my life ever since.
