AU where maybe May isn’t actually a very good guardian for Peter after Ben dies. She loves him, but she’s wrecked with grief, and she’s sad and angry and needs someone to blame. That someone is Peter, even though rationally she knows it’s not really Peter’s fault.
She becomes neglectful at most. She doesn’t actually hurt him. But it makes it very easy for Peter to be Spider-Man without her ever finding out.
Things get worse when she starts dating again. Her new boyfriend doesn’t like Peter, that becomes abundantly clear right off the bat. It’s just little things at first. Telling Peter to scram when they want to have a night in together. Not getting anything for Peter when he brings takeout for himself and May. Being quick to raise his voice if Peter does something that irritates him.
But the longer this guy is around, the worse he gets. The yelling gets louder and more frequent. The arguments start. May hesitates a bit at first, but then she starts taking her boyfriend’s side in every argument against Peter.
Then he kicks Peter out one night, but it’s fine, Spider-Man will just have a long patrol.
(Rest is under the cut bc this got a little out of hand lol oopsie)
Spider-Man has been recruited by Tony at this point, but Tony doesn’t know who he is under the mask yet. He, and all the other Avengers, assume he must be a young college kid.
May’s boyfriend just keeps getting worse and worse, though. Peter is getting kicked out of the apartment at least three nights a week. Then, the guy moves in with them.
Then, during a particularly loud, angry argument, the man hits him. Hard. But because of how quickly Peter heals, no one will ever believe him if he tries to tell anyone.
Peter has had enough. He doesn’t want to live here anymore. He can’t live here anymore. So he comes up with a better solution.
“Hey, Mr. Stark,” Spider-Man calls, swinging up to where they agreed to meet when Spider-Man called him earlier. He’s laughing nervously, and if he wasn’t wearing a mask, he’d be running his fingers through his hair. He doesn’t know why his heart is pounding so hard against his chest. He has several other backup plans if this doesn’t work.
He just really wants this to work.
“Just cut to the chase, kid,” Tony says, stepping out of the suit.
“It’s just, well, I’m sort of an Avenger now, right?”
“Key words being sort of,” Tony stresses.
“And the Avengers live in your tower, right?”
“Where are you going with this?”
“Well, it’s just, I’m sort of between places at the moment,” Peter says, waving his hand around, trying to sound casual. “And I was just wondering if–”
“Sure, kid, you can have a room at the Tower,” Tony says, scoffing. “Was that all? What happened, get kicked out of the dorms or something?”
“Or something,” Peter says, letting out a strained laugh. This was way too easy. Why was this so easy?
Tony tosses him a card and tells him to use it to get into the Tower, what floor to go to, and to look for the room with a blue and red spider on the door.
“You’re kidding,” Peter scoffs. “What am I, five?”
Tony just smirks at him, then twiddles his fingers in a wave and gets back in the suit to take off. Peter just huffs, watching him fly away.
“What a dick,” he mumbles, turning the access card over in his hands, running his fingers over the edges.
He doesn’t really mean that. Tony is being super nice, letting him crash in his tower without even knowing who he really is. Except, he thinks Tony has some idea as to what his secret identity is. Otherwise he wouldn’t be so trusting, right? He wouldn’t have just given Peter a card to access Avengers Tower if he didn’t do at least the most basic of background checks, right?
Tony probably knows hes just some dumb kid. It will be fine. This is fine. His plan is going swimmingly.
He shows up in the middle of the night with his backpack and a gym bag both stuffed to the brim, still in his Spider-Man costume. He grabbed everything he needed, everything that was sentimental, and he left. He’s really doing this. He’s really running away.
He wonders if May will miss him. She probably won’t. He doesn’t think about it much longer, instead hurrying out of the elevator in the Avengers floor and looking around for the spider-themed door.
And sure enough, there is a door with a blue and red spider emblem. The room itself is pretty spartan; there’s a bed, a desk, a walk in closet, and an en suite bathroom. It’s nice. The sheets on the bed are clean, if not a bit stale-smelling. He wonders how long this room has been ready for him.
He leaves again early the next morning, but he feels safe enough to leave his things behind while he goes to school.
For several days, Peter doesn’t run into anyone as he comes and goes from the building. It’s almost like no one else even lives on this floor. He’s had time to explore the common area, the kitchen, the gym on the floor below. It’s awesome. It’s incredible. After a couple weeks, he finally feels comfortable enough to walk around with his mask. Mr. Stark must know who he is by now. He’s been living in this tower for almost a month. There’s no way he doesn’t know.
So naturally, it’s when he’s chewing on a Twizzler as he gets off from the elevator one day after school that he comes face to face with the Avengers for the first time without his mask. They’re staring at him. Half of them look confused. The other half look annoyed.
So he holds out his left hand and offers, “Twizzler?” as he gives the bag a little shake.
No one laughs. No one takes him up on his offer.
“What are you doing here?” Tony asks, moving forward. “How did you get onto this floor?”
“Uh,” Peter stammers. “You gave me a key?”
“Why would I give a 12 year old a key to my tower?”
Peter bristles, frowning before he snaps back, “Fuck you, I’m fourteen!”
That does help the situation.
After nearly getting manhandled by several different Avengers, he’s clinging to the ceiling, now staring despondently at the bag of Twizzlers spilled across the floor.
“No way,” someone huffs. “You’re not actually the spider kid?”
“Spider-Man!” Peter emphasizes, frowning.
“Did you recruit a 12 year old?” Steve asks, turning to Tony.
“Oh crap, I recruited a 12 year old,” Tony mutters to himself.
“I’m fourteen!” Peter shouts at them.
No one is listening to him, and they’re now all bickering amongst themselves over what to do with him. Still annoyed, he takes the chance to skitter away and go hide out in his room. He also starts packing up his stuff again, and he closes off all his emotions as he stuffs a pair of shoes in his gym bag. He has his Spider-Man suit back on, a jacket over it, his mask ready to pull down over his head once he’s done.
“What do you think you’re doing?” Tony’s voice sounds throughout the room as the door slams open, and Peter doesn’t bother turning towards him.
“Packing,” he huffs.
“Why?”
“I’m clearly not wanted here either, so I’ll just get out of your hair,” he snaps, zipping up his bag with probably too much aggression. At least the zipper didn’t break.
“Let’s slow down, kid,” Tony starts, trying to move towards him to take the bag.
“Thanks for letting me stay here,” Peter says, shoving him away and tossing the card back at him.
They try to stop him, but he’s already rushing towards the open window, pulling his mask down, and diving out the window to swing away.
He crashes in an abandoned building a few blocks from school for a few nights, until he’s walking down the steps after the dismissal bell rings and sees a too-fancy car being swarmed by other teenagers with their phones out, taking photos, recording videos.
“Peter Parker!” Tony’s voice calls, and he can see him getting out of the car with a smirk on his face. “I’ve been looking for you!”
“Ned, kill me,” Peter begs.
“Why does Tony Stark know your name?”
“I don’t wanna talk about it.”
“Kid, hurry up!” Tony calls again. “I don’t have all day!”
“Do you think I could just walk the other direction?”
“I don’t think so, dude.”
Peter groans, throwing his head back, and then he drags his feet towards Tony.
“Mr. Stark–”
“Get in the car, kid,” Tony says, his voice pleasant. “Happy’s gonna drive us back to the tower.”
Peter feels like he’s gonna be sick as he ducks into the car and is followed by Iron Man himself. There’s really no escaping. He’s fucked.
“Twizzler?”
Peter snaps his head towards Tony, staring at the hand outstretched in front of him holding a bag of Twizzlers.
“Since you dropped yours the other day,” Tony teases him.
Peter frowns, but he snatches the whole bag and holds them close to his chest as he takes a bite.
He’s fucked. He’s so fucked. But at least he got his candy back.
AU where Peter isn’t biologically the son of Richard Parker at all. Mary Fitzgerald had just had a bad, sudden breakup with a long term boyfriend. Then she found out she was pregnant, and her friend/coworker Richard Parker told her he’d help her raise the baby if she wanted him to.
And she did. She didn’t know what to do otherwise. So Richard Parker is the name on her baby’s birth certificate, because she’d since lost contact with her previous boyfriend. He’d just taken a new job, and it required a lot of travel, and long hours, and they’d had a big fight about it that lead to the breakup. She hasn’t been able to get ahold of him. She hasn’t been able to tell him he has a baby.
Then Richard and Mary die, and Ben and May never knew that Peter wasn’t biologically Richard’s son. They would have taken him in regardless, but they had no idea about a biological father to contact and see if he wanted anything to do with his son.
They raise Peter like their own. They love him, they adore him. And everything else happens as per usual.
He becomes Spider-Man, and Tony takes an interest in him and makes him his personal intern. And Tony’s head of security, Happy Hogan, essentially becomes Peter’s chauffeur.
Happy hates being around Peter. This kid reminds him far too much of himself when he was younger, and he looks kind of like him, and he has the same laugh as his ex-girlfriend. It’s unnerving. Happy can’t stand it.
He gets voicemails from Peter, rambling about things Happy doesn’t care about, and it reminds him so much about how his ex-girlfriend used to call him and talk about anything and everything until she fell asleep, still on the phone with him. It’s Peter’s voice in his ear, but it’s Mary’s face in his mind’s eye.
Then something happens. Maybe May dies, or gets sick, and she can’t take care of Peter anymore. He’s 15 and he has no family left to care for him. He’s terrified. He’s panicking. He shows up one night in a panic, begging Tony for help, threatening to run away if he has to go into foster care.
Tony offers to adopt him, he barely even thinks about it. But something prompts Tony to do a DNA test, maybe just as a precaution, maybe to find out if Peter has any other family that could possibly come knocking down Tony’s door to claim he kidnapped him or something.
And then one morning when Peter is at school, Tony is shoving papers in Happy’s face, his voice heavy with sarcasm, asking Happy when he was going to tell Tony about his new addition to the family.
Happy can’t breathe. Because yes, Peter reminds Happy of himself as a kid. Because yes, Peter does have his nose and his hair and his eyes and his fingernails. Because yes, Peter sounds just like his ex-girlfriend, Mary Fitzpatrick, when he laughs.
AU where Peter is actually Tony’s biological son, but he was kidnapped by Hydra when he was very young, like 2ish.
It turns out Mary and Richard Parker were SHIELD agents, and they’d found Peter after busting a Hydra operation or something. The plane crash that killed them wasn’t an accident, and Hydra planned it so they could kidnap Peter back.
May and Ben aren’t related to him at all. They weren’t even related to Richard and Mary Parker. They’re Hydra agents who were sent to snatch him back.
Maybe Ben and May have been experimenting on him in secret. Maybe their experimentation is the only reason he actually survived the spider bite that gave him his powers.
Peter knows he was kidnapped. He knows May and Ben aren’t related to him at all. But he doesn’t remember his real name and he doesn’t remember his who real parents are bc he was so young. But he knows Mary and Richard were trying to get him back to his real parents. He knows May and Ben aren’t good people.
He has one vague memory of his dad, of sitting at a table and building Legos together. His dad’s face is fuzzy, and he can’t remember his voice, but he remembers feeling happy and feeling his dad’s fingers carding through his hair.
When he’s young, he tries a couple times to tell people he’s been kidnapped, that May and Ben aren’t really his aunt and uncle. No one ever believes him, because May and Ben wave it away as Peter’s grief for his parents making him say ridiculous things.
He’s always punished afterwards. He learns after the second time not to tell anyone. No one will ever believe him, anyway.
When he gets his spider powers, he keeps Spider-Man a secret from everyone. Ben never knows before he dies, and May never knows either.
Then he’s recruited by Tony, and he occasionally works with the other Avengers, too. He hears about how they’ve taken down Hydra agents. He hears about how they’ve taken down tons and tons of bad guys. And he knows all this, he does, but it’s different seeing it on the news than it is hearing it from the people who were actually there.
And so eventually, after Peter realizes he can trust Tony and the Avengers and SHIELD, he tells them he thinks he was kidnapped when he was little but he doesn’t know who he really is. And he knows May is a bad guy but he doesn’t know who she works for or why he was so important to kidnap.
“If I tell you something,” Peter whispers one evening when he’s working with Tony in his lab, “will you promise to believe me?”
“Of course, kid,” Tony says without hesitation.
“It’s gonna sound crazy,” Peter whispers. “It’s gonna sound made up. But you have to believe me.”
“I’ll believe you, Pete,” Tony says, putting down whatever he was working on to give Peter his full attention.
“You can’t tell May,” his voice cracks.
“Just tell me what’s going on.”
Peter has never heard Tony’s voice so soft before. It reminds him of something, but Peter can’t remember what it is.
When Peter says, “I think I was kidnapped. May isn’t really my aunt, and Ben wasn’t really my uncle,” Tony’s heart nearly stops.
He’s quiet for a long moment, and Peter starts to panic. He thinks Tony doesn’t believe him.
“What’s your real name?”
It startles Peter a little, hearing how serious Tony has become.
“I-I don’t know,” he admits.
“How old were you when you were kidnapped?”
“I don’t know,” he stammers. “Little? Really little.”
“Do you know who your parents are?”
“I know we played with Legos,” Peter says, his voice breaking. “I’m sorry, Mr. Stark, I don’t remember a lot.”
“That’s okay,” Tony says quickly, moving to hold onto Peter’s shoulders, one hand running through his hair. “It’ll be okay. We’ll figure it out.”
Peter feels lightheaded, because not only does someone finally believe him, but the way Tony is carding his fingers through his hair reminds him of the one fuzzy memory he has of his real dad.
It’s not long before they figure out May is a Hydra agent, and it’s sooner than that when the DNA test Tony runs confirms his suspicions that Peter is his missing son.
Homeless Peter Parker AU. May dies a few months after Ben, and after getting a bad placement in foster care (Skip), Peter decides to just leave. Run away. He hacks into his file with CPS so it shows him living with a fake foster family in Queens. Keeps tabs on it and puts in the occasional update to avoid any visits or any questions.
He lives in an abandoned building not too far from where he lived with May and Ben. Still goes to Midtown Tech. Sure, he’s not exactly happy, but he’s better than being with Skip.
Then the Civil War shit happens, but Tony never figured out who he was under the mask, he just cornered Spider-Man one night and convinced him to go to Germany with him.
He thinks Spider-Man must be a young college student, especially when he says he has homework lmao. He’s probably 18-21, give or take.
He offers Spider-Man an internship of sorts, and so Spider-Man ends up working with Tony in his workshop most days after school. He’s always in the Spider-Man suit, he never takes his mask off, never even lets Tony get a fingerprint. But he has fun. And Tony buys takeout for dinner most of the time, so he’s getting steady meals again. It’s nice. Peter starts to get comfortable.
And that was his first mistake. Because now he’s too comfortable, and he’s too attached, and he just knows it’s all going to go to shit sooner or later. It always does. He’s a curse to be around.
So also let’s make this a biological son au, and Tony eventually gets a sample of Spider-Man’s DNA when he leaves behind a straw from his drink. When he tests it, it’s a very close, slightly corrupted match to his missing son. Tony goes ballistic. He’s freaking out. His son has been right here, right under his nose this whole time! How could he have not realized Spider-Man was his son?
Peter Stark was kidnapped when he was just a toddler, when Tony was in Afghanistan. He always thought Obie killed his son, that’s what he insinuated when Tony confronted him about everything.
Turns out, Peter Stark had been handed over to Hydra. Richard and Mary Parker were Hydra agents. Maybe Peter was in the plane with them when it crashed, and it was actually a blessing in disguise that it crashed. They were going to take him to Russia.
Ben and May had no idea about any of the Hydra stuff. Ben and Richard weren’t actually that close, so he wasn’t surprised to learn he had a young nephew he had never been told about. He and May took Peter in without question, but they had no idea he wasn’t actually Ben’s nephew.
Anyway then Tony tracks down Spider-Man again and finds him living in an abandoned building, sleeping in an old camping bed.
AU where Peter is actually a Hydra experiment, raised to be a new form of super soldier. He’s Winter Spider 013, the first and only hybrid of the Winter Soldier and Black Widow DNA that made it past infancy. He is quite literally a test tube baby, created with genetic material taken from Bucky and Yelena.
He’s raised and experimented on by Hydra until he’s 10 years old, when Yelena escapes and takes him with her. She found out they used eggs harvested from her to make a child, and she went ballistic. She takes him to New York, setting up a fake identity for him as Peter Parker (she likes to think his real name would be Petrov Belova, but he can’t use that name if she wants to keep him away from Hydra), and setting up fake identities of May and Ben Parker so CPS doesn’t breathe down his neck. May and Ben Parker don’t exist, they never did, and now Peter can really be free.
She leaves him there after telling him about how she and the Winter Solider are his biological parents, after explaining the identities she set up to help him out. She doesn’t want to stay, afraid that they’d track her down and then take her baby to torture again. She loves him, but she has no idea how to actually take care of a child. She thinks this is what’s best for him.
Peter knows the Winter Soldier is his father, and Yelena told him he defected from Hydra. Peter thinks his father abandoned him and his mother, left them both to rot in Hydra. He doesn’t know that Bucky doesn’t know about him; he figures if Yelena knew, the Winter Soldier must have known, too.
He knew basic English thanks to Hydra, but he spends the next year perfecting a New York accent to blend in. Then he decides he wants to go to school, he wants to try to be normal. He’s 11 now, and he knows he could test out of school if he really wanted to, but he doesn’t want to stick out too much. He tests into 7th grade. A year later, he’s on a field trip when he gets bitten by a radioactive spider.
If he didn’t have super soldier DNA, it would have killed him. Instead, he develops spider powers. He finds it funny, if not a bit ironic.
He decides he wants to use his powers to be good, to be a hero. He calls himself Spider-Man, and thinks it’s genius that he’s hiding in plain sight. Winter Spider has super soldier strength, but he doesn’t have spider powers. Hydra will never know it’s him.
Yelena checks in on him once a year, never at any set time. She has no idea he’s Spider-Man. Peter loves her, and he’s thankful she saved him, but he doesn’t really know how parents are supposed to act, either. He doesn’t know how much he can trust her, and he doesn’t want her to try to stop him from being a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.
Spider-Man quickly gains the attention of SHIELD, who tasks the Avengers with bringing him in. They assume he’s a college kid, young. Maybe 19-21. Any older, and he probably wouldn’t be as quippy as Spider-Man has been noticed to be. Any younger, and they don’t think he’d have the maturity to use his powers to help other people so much. They’re curious about him. They’re cautious about him. They want to find out everything they can about him.
They can’t catch him. He’s a slippery little bugger, and a giant pain in the ass. Captain America has rammed him with the shield in more than one occasion, frustrated with how easily Spider-Man evades them.
He’s broken few of Peter’s ribs more than once, not that any of them know that. Peter thinks he’s lucky he hasn’t punctured a lung; he’s not sure how quickly he could heal from that, if at all.
After several months, they finally manage to bring him in, but only because they fumbled an encounter with a bad guy and it got a building dropped on Spider-Man. Peter had been so close to calming the guy down, to getting him to stop whatever bullshit he’d been up to, then the Avengers showed up and ruined all of Peter’s progress!
So now Spider-Man is injured, crumpled on a bed in the medbay, breathing so ragged it’s making everyone in the room anxious. They need to take off his mask. They need to put an oxygen mask on him, and finish assessing the head injury that’s still sluggishly bleeding from his head.
But this feels so wrong now, taking it off when he’s out cold. Not giving him a choice.
Steve finally takes the mask off, but then his feels like his breath is caught in his throat, squeezing his fingers around the fabric as he stares at the boy underneath the mask.
He looks just like Bucky when they were kids. He feels sick to his stomach, seeing Bucky’s face black and blue and covered in blood.
When he finally wakes up, he snappy and sassy fights back. He yells at them. He tries to escape, but he’s still very injured, and he gets wrestled back onto the bed.
Basically, Tony can’t stand this kid. He thinks he’s a pain in the ass, and he looks like Bucky. He has no reason to like him, even if he did originally think Spider-Man was a little endearing in an annoying puppy kind of way.
They think Spider-Man is a clone, sent by Hydra.
“So what’s your name, kid?” Tony asks.
Peter narrows his eyes at him.
“My fake name, my real name, or my made up name?”
“Is there a difference between a fake name and a made up name?”
“Yes.”
“Well, what’s your real name?”
“Wouldn’t you like to know, metal boy.”
Tony hates this kid. Here he is, an actual child, calling Iron Man metal boy to his face. What a little shit.
But then Bucky shows up, shocked, and Peter is pissed off.
“You are what the Americans call a deadbeat,” he tells Bucky, seething.
Tony barks out a laugh, then moves over to sit next to Peter. Peter just absolutely fucking despising Bucky is what makes Tony just turn around and go, “Okay actually I like this kid. I take back everything I said about him being a little shit, he’s perfect.”
Au where tony survives, but the events of no way home still happen
Due to idk some Iron Man shit with how he fortifies his buildings, only Tony, Morgan, and Pepper remember Peter. The spell took effect so they do initially forget him, but after a while, it starts fading and they start remembering him. Maybe Morgan remembers first, very early on, but because she’s only like 5 they don’t really take what she says seriously.
Tony and Pepper think “Petey Pie” is an imaginary friend until one day they bring Spiderman in for some avengers shit and Morgan just attaches herself to him and calls him Petey Pie and asks where he’s been and Peter damn near has a nervous breakdown.
“How do you know my 7 year old daughter?”
“I DONT KNOW DUDE YOU TELL ME!”
Peter has been pretty much entirely alone for like 2 years at this point, so hes tweaking that someone remembers him. He’s become friendly with the likes of Punisher and Deadpool, but they’re not exactly normal company to keep.
“Morgan, how do you know Spiderman?”
“He’s my big brother!”
“I think I’m gonna be sick,” Peter starts gagging, and he pushes his mask up just enough to suck in a deep breath through his mouth.
“YOURE gonna be sick? IM gonna be sick! What’s going on here!”
“IM HAVING A PANIC ATTACK, DIPSHIT, FIGURE IT OUT!”
He’s hyperventilating in a corner, one hand on a wall, his head bent down as he tries to breathe. Then he turns around and points at Tony.
“I am not – I AM NOT – doing this multiverse shit again!” Peter screeches. “Someone call the fucking wizard!”
Then he remembers Morgan is still there and he covers his mouth and starts rambling, “Oh shit – shoot – sorry Morgan you didn’t hear that don’t repeat that okay?”
Morgan narrows her eyes then, and she marches right over to him and jabs a finger in his belly, making him hunch over.
“Daddy said you never say bad words.”
“Well Daddy’s a dumbass, sweetie,” he says in a ragged voice, having knelt down on one knee to ruffle her hair a bit and push her head away, teasing her.
He missed her so much. When she giggles and shoves his hand away, he feels like he might have another nervous breakdown.
What if everyone forgetting him sends Peter in a downward spiral? Like he’s still a good guy, still a good vigilante, but hanging out with the likes of Deadpool and Punisher while having really no other human connection has had an effect on him.
He becomes a little mini alcoholic. Very self destructive. He hangs out at Sister Margaret’s or whatever it’s called a lot. He has a job there as Peter, too.
So when the avengers bring him on for smth and Morgan remembers him, it sends him on a bender. Tony finds him drunk on top of a building, humming along to a song and kicking his legs over the side of a skyscraper. He has a bottle of peach schnapps in his hand and he takes a swig every so often.
And all Tony sees is himself. He’s starting to remember very slowly, but holy shit, seeing Peter like this is killing him.
“Why are you drinking schnapps? Aren’t you like, 16?”
“Fuck you, I’m 19!” He whines. “And it’s because schnapps is a funny word. And Weasel let me have the bottle for free. Think he felt bad for me, he usually charges me.”
“And who the hell is Weasel?”
“Why are you being such a sourpuss? Come on, we had a good mission, we’re all having a drink in the afternoon–”
“No, WE are not all having a drink. YOU are having a drink. And you need to hand it over now.”
“What? No way dude! It’s mine! Get your own bottle!”
They tussle a bit over the bottle until Tony yanks it away, but Peter gets huffy and just flops over the side of the building. It nearly gives Tony a heart attack until he sees Peter swinging away.
“I have a heart condition, you know!” he shouts after him.
Peter either doesn’t hear him or ignores him, Tony isn’t sure. What he is sure about, however, is that he’s going to find this Weasel idiot and tear him a new one for selling his kid liquor.

Fun little fic idea for my first post on this blog:
Peter gets bitten and becomes Spiderman when he’s 13 instead of 14. He’s 13 when Ben dies, during the events of Civil War, and Homecoming. Except Tony never finds out who he is behind the mask and recruits him while he’s in the Spiderman suit. Everyone thinks he’s like a college kid.
Then May dies. He ends up in a foster home that’s shit (maybe with Skip?) and he runs away. He stops going to school because he doesn’t want the cops bringing him back to the foster home he ran away from. He basically is now Spiderman full time, and he sleeps in an abandoned building.
Fury somehow finds out who he is and recruits him by vaguely threatening to send him back into the foster system if he doesn’t work for SHIELD. Peter reluctantly agrees.
He ends up living in Avengers Tower, but he has a condition with Fury that no one else can know his real name or how old he is or even ever see him without the Spiderman mask. Fury agrees.
He gets to go back to Midtown, and there’s a couple SHIELD agents who stand in as Peter’s “foster parents” for school related shit to keep up appearances.
All the Avengers think he goes to college classes during the day or whatever. They think of him as some annoying vigilante. They don’t like him. They’re actively kinda mean to him bc they don’t like that Fury just added him to their team. In response, Peter is very surly with them, he isn’t afraid to talk back or to call them dipshits or insult them.
ENTER Stark Industries field trip trope! Peter forgot abt the field trip, and he isn’t able to get out of it bc Fury already made sure his permission slip got signed. Fury thinks it’s hilarious. (He’s 14 at this point i don’t remember if I mentioned that)
The Avengers are having their daily bitch session about Fury and what have you when FRIDAY announces that Spiderman has returned to the Tower much earlier than normal. The team is confused. They want to keep tabs on him.
FRIDAY also mentions that he arrived with the Midtown Tech robotics class (or whatever could be the decathlon team idk) field trip. They’re even more confused. They ask if he’s a chaperone or smth. Maybe he’s a volunteer.
FRIDAY informs them that Spiderman appears to be one of the students. That a boy matching Spider-Man’s DNA signature or whatever and wearing the same clothes he was wearing that morning when he left is currently lingering towards the back of the group, hiding behind one of his friends.
And that’s how they find out Spiderman is 14 year old Peter Parker<3
Bonus points if the avengers think Spiderman is a delinquent bc Fury previously tried to use them to capture Spiderman, but Peter just kept evading them (I do love fics where Steve just launches his shield at Spidey full force and doesn’t care how badly it hurts him, I love him the angst of it all). Then when Fury DOES bring him in and announce that he’ll be living in the tower, he just says “I made a deal with him” and they think it was a deal to work as an avenger so he didn’t get criminal charges or smth lmao
Okay but for this au where they all think he’s a delinquent. If they find out who he is when he’s there on a field trip, I’m imagining them eventually pulling him aside to interrogate him. Because what the hell are you doing here on a school field trip what do you mean you’re just a kid what the hell is going on?
And Peter is so upset, because now Flash is gonna just tell everyone that he did something he wasn’t supposed to and got in trouble with the fucking avengers. And so he’s giving them such an attitude as they tell him that they know he’s Spiderman.
So he just shoves his hands in his hoodie pocket and hikes his shoulders up near his ears and tells them in the cockiest tone he can muster, “Yeah, it’s me, don’t cream your pants.”
They’re all so shocked that they don’t even know what to say, so he continues with, “So can you guys just be cool for once in your lives and NOT tell my teacher or whatever? Seeing as it’s kind of, you know, a SECRET! Dipshits!”
But also imagine him getting so whiney because, “I didn’t even DO anything! I was following the rules, I was keeping my head down, you’re the ones who couldn’t wait until I got back to start interrogating me! Now stupid Flash is gonna tell everyone I got arrested by the fucking avengers in their own tower!”
“Language,” Steve says on habit.
“Bite me!” Peter snaps. No one can even get annoyed about it, because he really just looks like a kid who’s having the worst day of his life and like he might jump out of his skin if anyone moves too fast near him.
“I’ll do you one better, Spiderling,” Tony says, putting an arm around Peter’s shoulders and dragging him back out to his class.
“Don’t call me that,” Peter mutters, a frown on his face as he drags his feet. He wants to just not cooperate at all, not move a muscle so Tony can’t drag him out back to his class, but he’s afraid of causing any more trouble for himself.
When Mr Harrington asks what happened and why was Peter taken by them and what did Peter do, Tony can feel Peter tensing up next to him.
“I was just offering Piper here–”
“–Peter!–”
“–an internship. As my personal intern, actually. I’ve had my eye on him for a while, what a coincidence he showed up here today.”
“You’re shitting me.”
“Language!” Mr Harrington scolds him, but Peter just rolls his eyes. It actually makes Tony want to laugh.
So Peter gets his powers when he’s 13, and Ben dies a couple months later. Then he becomes Spiderman. A year later, May is dating Happy. Maybe May was going to lose the apartment, so Happy suggests they move in with him at the Tower.
Peter, meanwhile, is so fucking nervous bc he’s already been recruited as Spiderman for Civil War, but Tony never pried when Peter said he didn’t want to take off his mask or share his identity yet. Tony, feeling generous mostly bc he was desperate for help, decided not to push it.
And now he has to LIVE in Tony Stark’s tower? How is he supposed to be a friendly neighborhood spiderman when he lives in high security with an AI tracking his every move?? He’s had to become very sneaky about going out for his spider related activities.
Then a few months pass. Maybe it’s almost Christmas. And Spiderman gets the crap kicked out of him bc the Avengers interrupted him trying to talk down some bad guy or whatever and basically it’s their fault he gets super hurt.
And then they take the mask off when he’s in the medbay so they can fully asses the damage, and it’s stunned silence. Because Spiderman is a child. Did anybody know Spiderman is a child?
No one speaks until Happy just, “Peter, what the FU-”
“Don’t be mad don’t be mad don’t be mad!!!” Peter immediately interrupts him. “And please don’t tell Aunt May!!! Happy if she finds out, she’ll freak out. And when she freaks out, I freak out!”
“I know that!”
“So don’t tell her!!!”
“Happy,” Tony interrupts, speaking slowly. “Who the hell is this kid?”
“Really, Tony?” Happy scoffs, and now he’s offended on both his own behalf and Peter’s. “He’s May’s nephew!”
“…May?”
“My girlfriend!”
“Oh, the hot nurse?”
“Hey!” Peter’s voice wavers.
“Tony, they BOTH live here. You’ve met them.”
“I meet a lot of people, do you expect me to remember all of them?”
“When they’re important, yes, I do!”
They’re bickering back and forth while Peter slowly inches toward the edge of the bed, unhooking himself from IVs and whatnot. He does pause a moment when he hears Happy call him important, because he didn’t think Happy actually liked him all that much and that he only put up with him for May’s sake, so it’s a nice surprise to hear. He’s nearly to the door when there’s a hand on his shoulder, tugging him back.
“And just where do you think you’re going?” Happy asks, marching him right back into the bed. “A building just fell on you! Get back in bed!”
“S’not like it’s the first time,” he huffs, but he realizes it was the entirely wrong thing to say when Happy and Tony both zero in on him and ask him to repeat himself. “I mean, uh, nothing! I didn’t say anything!”
“I knew you were gonna give me gray hair,” Happy groans, falling into a chair near Peter’s bed. He looks like he might faint.
“Well,” Tony says, brushing imaginary lint from his clothes, “perhaps now you’ll reconsider that internship offer, won’t you, Spider-Kid?”
“It’s Spider-Man,” Peter mumbles.
“Internship? What internship?” Happy snaps.
“I offered Spiderling an internship after Germany–”
“You!” Happy accuses, standing and pointing a finger at him. “You took my kid to Germany!”
“Yes, you were there.”
“Well I didn’t know he was a kid! Or that he was my kid!”
“Well, I didn’t know either!”
They’re bickering again, arguing about Tony being irresponsible and not thinking things through.
Until Peter’s voice breaks through their argument, asking, “Did you just call me your kid?”
Happy freezes, a little embarrassed, until he scoffs a bit and says, “Of course you’re my kid, Peter! I drive you all over New York, I went to your parent-teacher thing when May was working late, you eat me out of house and home–”
“–I have a fast metabolism–”
“–of course you’re my kid!”
Happy is stammering, and Peter is refusing to make eye contact, and Tony makes a gagging noise.
“Just hug and have your little Disney Princess moment or whatever. I’ll come back when you’re done being so sentimental, it’s making me sick.”
Happy glares at him as he walks out, even though he does also immediately go over to check on Peter and hold him close for a moment.
“Does Mr. Stark not like me?”
“I think, unfortunately for me, he likes you a lot.”
Peter looks at him confused. Happy just shoves his head back under his chin so he can hold him close a moment longer. He damn near had a heart attack when the Spiderman mask came off and Peter’s big, freaked out eyes were staring back at him.
