Some of us know, no matter who you are or where you come from, that the simple act of walking in public can get scary at the drop of a hat. We’ve been followed, insulted, harassed or even assaulted by people who do what they do because they think we don’t belong on the street. Well, they’re wrong, and we deserve better. A Chalk Walk is your way to Hollaback!, your chance to turn the tables. A Chalk Walk is you reclaiming the street, your freedom. A Chalk Walk is you healing yourself, telling the world, “I have the right to be here. To be me. To walk wherever, whenever, however I please.” So bring a piece of chalk with you the next time you’re out walking. Write a message to the person who tried (and FAILED) to intimidate you. And submit or tag a photo of your #chalkwalk to ours... We Chalk Walk against street harassment, sexism, racism, LGTBQIA-phobia, sizeism, albeism, gender-based violence, .. We Chalk Walk to show we share the streets and that we’re all in this together.

Probably one of the only people in my town brave enough to do this! 😊💪 Definitely got some crazy looks.. Also a few old men had crossed the street when I wrote “I’ve been sexually harassed here since 11 years old” 👌 & there were also some old men who’d come close enough to read what I was writing!! “Someone must have really pissed you off” one guy said.

Old painting, new wheatpaste.  In 2011, I began a series of paintings called Victim of American Fear.(The title is from this article by Adam Serwer for The Prospect. As an illustrator, I’m often inspired to create a painting from something I’ve read.) The series was meant to address the killings of black people that happen when people find themselves afraid of black people just because they are black. Think Trayvon Martin. Think Oscar Grant.  Also think Renisha McBride. If I continue this series, I’ll want to include a black woman.  

After the recent killings of more black bodies, I decided to try these paintings out on the street as wheatpastes.  Critiquing my own work, I do think these paintings are a little over-literal, with the gun targets covering the bodies. I don’t mean to be provocative just for the sake of it. But I do think it’s a strong image.  These are pasted in Newark.
