I was actually just reading about this in Caste: The Origins of our Discontent. The author talks about how one’s body goes into stress or anxiety or defense mode when the person knows they’re being followed, watched, or otherwise scrutinized. She brought race into it. A Nigerian man, who was just a person in his country, was healthy as anything. He got to the U.S. and within a year, his doctor told him he was suddenly pre-diabetic and had high blood pressure. He never had those things in his country. He learned that being Black in the U.S. is a very different experience than being Black in a Black-centric country. The author elaborated more about those in poverty, women, and being a minority in general. Having that “fight or flight” triggered in the body, sometimes for hours or days or weeks at a time, degrades the body’s natural defenses, making them more vulnerable to disease.

(Los Angeles Times) — At first glance, Kemper Donovan’s backyard bungalow appears perfectly normal for this Santa Monica neighborhood, but a few clues suggest otherwise.A map of the English county of Devon. A copy of “The Poisoner’s Handbook.”

A professional-looking microphone perched on a wooden desk. And then there’s the enormous portrait of Agatha Christie hanging next to the guest bed.

If you use your little gray cells — as Christie’s fictional detective Hercule Poirot liked to say — you might deduce that this is where Donovan, 43, records the long-running podcast “All About Agatha.” In it, he and co-host Catherine Brobeck set out to read and rank all of Christie’s 66 mystery novels, and discuss them in exhaustive detail.

For six years, thousands of Agatha Christie enthusiasts across the globe have downloaded the podcast for what one listener described as a “joyfully geeky” take on the Queen of Crime’s expansive canon. In addition to the mystery novels, Christie penned 14 short story collections, two memoirs, more than 20 plays and six non-mystery novels under the pseudonym Mary Westmacott.

Donovan and Brobeck discussed all of it with glee. As “Agathologists,” they lectured at the University of Cambridge on the collective catharsis of the denouement (when the detective gathers everyone in the drawing room to reveal the killer), gave media interviews on the steady stream of new Christie adaptations, and became beloved pillars of the close-knit community of devout Christie fans and scholars.

Today, the podcast averages just under 100,000 downloads a month with most of its listeners in the U.S., the U.K., Canada, Australia, Germany and Scandinavia.

The co-hosts frequently disagreed. Donovan was a die-hard Miss Marple fan, Brobeck was Poirot all the way. You could almost hear Brobeck’s eyes roll whenever Donovan attempted a phrase in French, or read, once again, from Christie’s autobiography. But even when they argued, they made each other laugh.

Then, suddenly and tragically, Brobeck died last November, just days after her 37th birthday, from a previously undetected genetic disorder. Hundreds of listeners reached out to Donovan to express their shock and grief. Many felt they had lost a friend.

Who wants to hear about my new obsession? Great. Textile people, knitting folks, fiber peeps, history of those things lovers, and archives/special collections comrades, this is for us.

So a few weeks ago, in the midst of A Big Sad, I set out on the simple distracting mission of giving my mom the link to something I want for Christmas. Long story short, I failed. I fell down a deep rabbit hole on traditional Estonian knitting and ended up ordering a book on the subject from Estonia for myself. Anyway, it arrived and holy shit.

300 pages of fiber/knitting/history nerdiness. The first hundred cover Estonian knitting history, including archaeological finds (bog body knitwear!), regional traditions, dyes and colors, museum collections and patterns reconstructed from them!

As an archivist, I lost it when I saw this, a helpful guide to searching Estonian museum collections for English speakers. Vocabulary for knitwear collections! Navigating the search features! MIND BLOWN. In the history intro section, they recommend books on knitting history with the website link to libraries with free digital copies. They are pulling me farther into the rabbit hole and I am here for it.

And because I am a knitter and an archivist, they included a basic guide on preservation and care of vintage knitwear. I am crying rn

Ok, history is cool and all but what about the knitting??? It is amazing. This volume is not complete patterns but more of a stitch/pattern encyclopedia that can be added to other projects. It includes tips on color palate while providing reference to various traditional plates of different regions of Estonia

So these are suggested stranded colorwork patterns for mittens. But use them wherever

The second volume (hard to find) is all on socks/stockings, and volume 3 (which has just been released in English) is all about mittens and I might have ordered it this morning.

It is not the easiest book to track down, nor the cheapest. As I said, I ordered it from Estonia. Amazon and Amazon owned Abe Books both had it for around $70. I, personally, refuse to give bezos money and, in this case if you are considering buying it, I encourage you to order it from this shop in Estonia. Even with international shipping, taxes, fees, and such, it was actually about $10 cheaper.

Rereading And Then There Were None is really funny. What do you mean Wargrave wrote a fake letter for himself? Was Constance Culmington real? Was he going to go on elaborate fake stories about her if anyone inside Indian Island bothered to ask him about her invitation? Or was he going to recount real stories and he, in fact, stayed up late at night making his fake invites for his murder victims going 'now which one of my associates would plausibly throw something like buying an island and inviting me to the murder party... aha! I know! Constance!' I know Christie probably made it as a throw-away line to misdirect, but it's so funny, did Mr. 'killing a murderer keeps the number of murderers in the world the same, kill at least two murderers' really make friends with who seemed like a sunbathing aristocrat hippie? How did they meet? Was the relationship that close? I dunno if my plausibly distant remote friend would be up for inviting me to her island without it being a little suspicious. Either scenario is hilarious to me. Either Wargrave made someone out of thin air, or Constance Culmington got out of her Syria vacation one day to look at the news and found her old 'I swear he's not evil, he just gets weirdly intro retributive justice sometimes!' buddy got found dead on Indian Island and also badly forged her signature.

Thinking about that one Wendy Carlos video where she's boymoding and has the big fake glued on sideburns and the suit, but with beautifully shaped eyebrows and that t-girl voice, and shes completely and utterly unconvincing trying to pass as a man, but also shes just so excitedly infodumping about moog synthesizers and batting her eyelashes its hard not to fall in love with her.

This was one of Wendy's last television appearances for a very long time. She came out publicly nine years later in an interview with Playboy magazine and talked about how miserable she was at this point in her life. She'd released Switched-On Bach as Walter Carlos in October of 1968, less than a year after she'd begun HRT, when the physical changes were becoming more noticeable.  Wendy had been living as a woman in her private and social life, but the public appearances and interviews she had to do in the wake of its commercial success and critical acclaim were a source of profound anxiety and dysphoria.  Wendy used to cry in her hotel room as she applied the press-on sideburns, put on a wig to hide her long hair, and used an eyeliner to fake a five-o' clock shadow before going on television shows (and before her meeting with Stanley Kubrick to compose the soundtrack to A Clockwork Orange); few people bothered to hide their speculation and open disgust.

Over the next decade, she continued with the treatments and was able to afford gender affirming surgeries but released two more albums as “Walter”—fears for her safety and pressure from her record label made it unthinkable to do otherwise. That’s ten years of both public and creative isolation in a field she pioneered:

The fact that I couldn’t perform publicly stifled me. I lost a decade as an artist.I was unable to communicate with other musicians. There was no feedback. I would have loved to have gone onstage playing electronic-music concerts, as well as writing for more conventional media, such as the orchestra.

This is Wendy Carlos almost twenty years later.  She was always beautiful, but right here? She’s fucking luminous.

Imagine waiting for the coast guard or whatever to show up and instead a replica of 18th century merchant ship pulls up and tows you to the coast.

The mooring went well, and our destinies were linked for very long hours, during which we shared the same radio frequency to communicate with each other. The crew of the Götheborg showed great professionalism and kindness towards us. They adapted their speed to the size of our boat and the weather conditions. We felt accompanied by very professional sailors. Every hour, the officer on duty of the Götheborg called us to ensure everything was going well.[...] This adventure, very real, was an incredible experience for us. We were extremely lucky to cross paths with the Götheborg by chance and especially to meet such a caring crew. Dear commander and crew of the Götheborg, your kindness, and generosity have shown that your ship is much more than just a boat.
