Love how tumblr has its own folk stories. Yeah the God of Arepo we’ve all heard the story and we all still cry about it. Yeah that one about the woman locked up for centuries finally getting free. That one about the witch who would marry anyone who could get her house key from her cat and it’s revealed she IS the cat after the narrator befriends the cat.
Might I add:
The defeat of the wizard who made people choose how they’d be to be executed
The woman who raised the changeling alongside her biological child
The human who died of radiation poisoning after repairing the spaceship
The adventures of a space roomba
Cinderella finding Araura (and falling in love)
I don’t know a snappy description but the my nemesis cynthia story certainly lives in my head
hilariously, these are almost all in my fic tag. so, a compiled list from the notes (and some extras):
The God of Arepo (graphic novel 1 / 2 / 3) (ebook)
The Monster of Sentan
The Witch’s Cat
Raise Both Children
Stabby the Roomba (honorable mention)
Cinderella Marries the Prince (comic)

What about the one with the princess locked in a tower learning to become a wizard? That’s lived in my mind for years and I haven’t seen it in a long time
Oh, love that story, adding it to the list: 20. Princess Talia and adding a few more contenders 21. Thyme 22. The Monster under the Bed 23. A Meaningful Death 24. Humans are unstoppable…until they aren’t 25. The Monster under the Fridge 26. Antler Guy 27. Cleric slamming healing spells
Adding a few more I remembered: 28. The Frog and the Scorpion 29. HSTHETE 30. The First Witch in the World 31. Imagine that Oceans were replaced by Forests 32. A Faerie taking a Name 33. The Dragon on the Farm 34. Synovus & Menace 35. Raising the Anti-Christ 36. Aliens vs. Flora & Fauna of Earth (pretty sure there are even more additions to the original post but I had this one saved) 37. Doctors without Borders…in Space! 38. The Villain-Wrangler 39. The Last Contact 40. The 100 Parent-Point Children 41. And the Heavens Wept 42. The Night Gentleman 43. The Serpent God and their Priestess
44. No One Showed Up for the Last Storytime

Still bothered by the US cultural idea that men can only be non-romantically intimate with one another in war-like or competitive circumstances.
I'm pretty quiet about the fact I'm a transman usually, but holy shit I need to tell you about the culture shock I'm going through because it's blindsiding me.
There's a huge sense of social isolation that comes with being perceived as male, because now people are subconsciously treating me as a potential predator. All strangers, no matter their gender, keep their guard up around me.
It made me realize that there is no inherent camaraderie in male socialization as there is in female socialization—unless, of course, it's in very specific environments. And the fact I don't amnbiently experience this mutual kinship in basic exchanges anymore is an insanely lonely feeling.
You know how badly this would have fucked my mind up if I had grown up with this?
It is 4:30am and I'm mourning the loss of a privilege I didn't even know I had.
Anyway, I'm going to figure out how to navigate this. Don't know how yet, but I'm gonna.
Absolutely, because it's an extremely sticky issue.
Frankly, this is something I would've never understood without living the experience.
It's now blatantly clear to me that most cis men probably experience chronic emotional malnutrition. They're deprived of social connection just enough for it to seriously fuck with their psyches, but not enough for them to realize that it's happening and what's causing it.
It's like they're starving, but don't know this because they've always been served 3 meals...except those meals have never been big enough.
This deprivation comes from all sides of aisle, by the way.
In the case of women: When I'm out in public and interact with women, all of them come off as incredibly aloof, cold, and mirthless. I have never experienced this before even though I know exactly what this composure is—the armor that keeps away creepy-ass men.
As someone who used to wear it myself, I know this armor is 100% impersonal. Nobody likes wearing it, and I can say with absolute certainty that women would dump the armor in favor of unconditional companionship with men if doing this didn't run the risk of actual assault. (Trust me when I say women aren't just being needlessly guarded.)
But I only have a complete understanding of this context because I've experienced female socialization. If I hadn't, I would've thought this coldness was a conspiracy against me devised by roughly half of the human population. Even now, with all that I know about navigating the world as a woman, I'm failing to convince my monkey-brain that this armor isn't social rejection.
And as for male socialization? Again, it seems taboo for a man to be platonically intimate with men for reasons I have yet to fully understand, but I think it boils down to a) the fact society teaches boys that it's not okay to be soft with each other, and b) garden-variety homophobia. Our media only shows men being intimate with one another when they're teamed up against a dire situation, and I'd bet real money it's a huge reason why men gravitate toward activities that simulate being teamed up against an opposing force.
But men are not machines of war. Yes, testosterone absolutely gives you Dumb Bastard Brain, but that just makes you want to skateboard a wagon down a hill or duct-tape your friend to the wall, not kill someone.
The human species looks so much colder standing from this side.
I can see how men might convince themselves that their feelings of emotional desperation is personal weakness as opposed to a symptom they're all experiencing from Western* Imperialism. Because this human connection, this frith, is as essential for our wellbeing as water is.
So sick. How sick. I want to destroy this garbage.
* EDIT: Had this written as “White Imperialism” originally, but a few people interpreted this as me blaming a group of people as opposed to a system, so I’ve changed this for clarity.
Stop pampering men for God sake, they don't fucking deserve it while their out here murdering and raping women and children, they're going after you as well, you'll always be a woman and no one sees you as anyone else, if they say so they're lying.
No.
Why THE FUCK wouldn't anyone and everyone deserve a little pampering in life...? Like everyone needs a little grace, especially in person. And isn't it obvious this social/emotional starvation is what leads several men to make the dark and desperate choices to start the rapey/murder path...? It's a vicious spiral that does no one any good!
But to make it a little personal... I wonder if these types of revelations and known interactions from the female perspective/experience are part of what keeps me from leaning too far into the male perspective/experience. I can 100% say with my current presentation I often get the first initial male cold-shoulder or aloofness or stiffness. And then as soon as I speak, or they take that second look, there's the realization that I'm female and the armor partially comes off and people warm. I would even say that people who perceive me as female will get into my personal bubble uninvited.
The only thing I've heard of yet, to combat the male isolation is time... Making friends who can trust you enough to let your armor down, knowing that any affection or closeness is not sexual in nature but innocent hugs and friendship and silliness.
Okay book readers of Tumblr, I could use some help.
I read a book years ago, and I’m trying to find it again, but I don’t remember the title.
What I do remember was that it was a (possibly?) romance novel (not a smutty one) set in Victorian England. The main character was physically disabled and had to use a cane to get around, and I’m pretty sure she was a witch?… I don’t really know, but magic definitely played a big part in the story. I’m also pretty sure one character was a doctor named Graves, and other characters commented on the irony of such a name. One scene I remember was this party where the characters unwrapped an actual Egyptian mummy (which was an actual thing Victorians did!).
Also the main character’s disability wasn’t magicked away, her maid and her best friend got together and made her new shoes and canes that went with her outfits and made it easier for her to walk without pain or discomfort.
I’m going to keep looking for the book, but if this is ringing any bells please reblog with the title, I really want to read this one again.
@sophielovesbooks @books-and-cookies @sleepyreads @whilereadingandwalking @just0nemorepage @i-love-books-because-reasons please help if you can
It doesn't ring a bell for me, but maybe someone else can help? Guys?

No clue what this book is but given that synopsis? I want to read it.
That's where your money is going 😎👉👉💰
OMG MY FAMILY THOUGHT I WAS CRAZY AND LIKE NO
I track my spending on a spreadsheet. And I definitely saw a significant rise in groceries, etc. over the last few months.
The first higher bill/receipt I was like ‘hmmm, maybe I got some out of season produce and maybe something else wasn’t on bogo’
But the the next time, it was the same and it hasn’t gone back. I told my family and they are just like ‘well what are you buying? You must be buying extra stuff for your total to be so high’ and like NO.
I am buying the same fucking things I always buy. I might get green apples vs red depending on what looks best, but everything is the same. Same toilet paper, same pasta, same granola bars, same seltzer water. And I get the same amounts to last for about a week.
The prices have just gone up! And my pay hasn’t changed. (Although the assholes that run the company have cut payroll, so even though I make the same amount dollar wise, hour wise I make less. It’s a fucking pay cut without cutting the pay rate.
But yeah. I’m not sure what the income threshold is to where you don’t notice the inflation/gouging, but it’s fucking there.
Ya'll, please don't take your frustrations over this on the people working at the store! They have 0 control over price increases (or product availability issues even).
Mad about it? Good, you should be. Goto the stores webpage and find the contact us page and give corporate your opinion! Contact your state congresperson and give them your opinion too. All the way up even. Cause these price increases are in part because COMPANIES CAN! Look at gas prices as an example. Sure, there are supply chain issues and workforce issues and all that. But at the end of the day, profits are soaring DESPITE all that. Because a company can just increase the margin they make on an item (while cutting labor mind you because that is seen as the only controllable expense). But the folks that work at the store? They are already getting it from the company. Pay rates that still aren't great, lackluster raises if they even get them. Frustration over empty shelves and corporate folks yelling at them to keep the store looking full. They don't need you in their face too. Your on the same side after all.
In case you didn’t see
John Mulaney decided to surprise the crowd for his show last night by having Dave Chappelle open up
Chappelle made transphobic and homophobic jokes, which Mulaney clapped for and hugged Chappelle as he got off stage
No one knew Chappelle would show up
Trans and gay people in the crowd were attacked by the comedian on stage without warning
If you care about trans people
If you care about gay people
You will not support either of them anymore
…John Mulaney did WHAT
Since when is he homophobic or transphobic what the fuck happened to this man since we saw him last
Apparently certain things about him became a lot more visible. - _ -

What Monster from Folklore Protects you?
Banshee
"Far, far away something made a single ghostly howl, like a banshee in the dark." -Lucy Christopher
The banshee, is a creature from Irish Folklore. Though not inherently malevolent, it is said to be a dark omen. The ghostly cries of a weeping woman drift in the air, warning any unfortunate soul who hears of impending death. Following her like the train of a morbidly beautiful wedding dress, a thick fog envelops her skin as she croons a sorrowful, haunting song which is filled with concern and love for her family. This song can be heard a few days before the death of a family member and in most cases the song can only be heard by the person for whom it is intended. Some even go to argue that it is the banshee's unwitting song which kills the person.
You care very strongly about your family and friends. Your loyalty towards those whom you care for is unconditional. You are an excellent and reliable friend, trustworthy enough to bear even the darkest of secrets. Secrets which you would gladly carry to the grave unless of course, they harm your loved ones. You will fight tooth and nail to protect the ones you care for, restraint left abandoned. The banshee admires your reslience and passion. It desires to aid you in protecting those you love and to help you navigate a harsh reality just be warned and keep a close eye on the people you love,Your undying loyalty may just become their undoing...

Thanks to @starforger where I first saw this
Things I will never know
I always feared the day I’d finally find you because I didn’t know you. Didn’t know your beliefs. Political, religious, views on LGBTQ+. Was afraid you’d want something from Dad, something I don’t have to give. Or afraid you would still be so angry about that time…
But I still wanted to find you. Wanted to let you know about him. What happened. In case it mattered to you or was needed for care reasons.
I wanted to find you to know the truth of what happened. Why did your mom and our dad break up? What did she know? What did you know?
Did you ever try and find me, ever wonder about what happened with us? Did you know my mom and our dad also split up? What was your favorite movie, favorite tv show. Would we have found commonalities outside of our dad? You were just nine years older, but you’d have remembered the 70s like I do the 80’s.
What was your favorite car? Were you a car person? Were you kind? Was your childhood good or bad? What about growing up? 61 years is alot of time on this earth (though far too short still).
You ever get married? Have kids? Were you straight, gay, non-binary? Were you comfortable with that?
Reading your obituary hit me alot harder than I expected. For all the fear and what ifs, you were still my brother and i really wanted to get to at least talk to you and see if there was a bridge there still, see if we might have the chance to reconnect after all these years.
I hope your life was good. I hope your passing wasn’t painful. I’ll see you again one day…
Mostly I'm watching black people I know express distaste with non-black people ignoring the context of what happened, thankfully no one I follow is clowning where I can see it.
But I'm watching arguments about 'toxic masculinity' (can you call defending your wife from someone being a dick to her 'toxic masculinity'???) and 'male violence' (I know PLENTY of black women who would backhand someone talking about them like that) and 'abusive' (fellas is it abuse to defend your wife's honor in a way you likely were taught yourself?) etc etc and they're all ignoring the actual context of what happened.
A black man who knew better made an offensive and ableist joke about a black woman's medical condition that drastically changed her appearance and caused her to sacrifice something culturally important to her, on live TV in front of an audience, and her black husband got on stage and confronted the problem the same way it would have played out if this was not a televised event.
It's wild to me that people aren't connecting the dots. "He shouldn't have used violence" sure and Chris Rock shouldn't have made the joke but he did and he got what he knew he would have gotten if he'd said it anywhere else. He was part of that hair documentary. He KNOWS BETTER. I got popped just like that for a comment about a black woman's hair when I was 8. There are lines and he crossed them. And unlike my 8yo self, he knew where those lines were when he chose to open his mouth.
She was in the audience. She was sitting by Will. Chris looked directly at her and pointed at her before making the joke. He knew what he was doing. He watched Will come up to him agitated. And he didn't press charges even though police encouraged him to do so. He knew exactly what he would have gotten for that in any other place.
I mean, he also knows how much he'd come off as a whiny crybaby who dished out but couldn't take it if he did press charges. At the level of scrutiny both of these guys are at, everything about how they're handling this conflict has to be calculated in terms of public reaction, which has layers and layers of observation and scrutiny from both people with and without context.
as you absolutely already know, obv. but like. yes. Rock's douchery had layers and he knew exactly what kind of nastiness he was pulling, and he was executing that nastiness in a venue where he must have thought he could force Smith to observe without being able to do anything about it: Smith was up for an Oscar himself, he had to attend, Jaida essentially had to attend, Rock is on stage--what the hell is Will Smith going to do to him if he makes that joke? The more humiliating he can make it, the more powerful he feels, and yeah, you are correct and he knew precisely what kind of target he was aiming at, because the more humiliating and painful the joke he can make without retaliation from Will Smith the more he can get off on how much power and control he can exert. Which, you know, totally consistent with Chris Rock's everything.
It's an interesting incident in terms of just how much social context layers onto it to underscore exactly how much of an offensive, nasty, asshole Chris Rock was being there--again--and also in terms of how much weight and context hangs on everything Will Smith chose to do and why. As You Know Jaz the standards that even wealthy and famous and powerful black men are held to are so different from what wealthy and famous and powerful white men are, and especially given the weird dynamics of being minority people in a majoritarian institution--there's so much pressure there to navigate, the stakes are so high!
like, I guarantee to you that the choice to slap Chris Rock rather than punching him was a thing Will Smith made an active decision about based on calculations about the signal that sent: how much aggression vs control does he calculate that both Rock, a generalized black audience, and a generalized white audience will see? how much context does he need to underscore? you can see Chris Rock trying to weasel out and make Will Smith look unreasonable ("I said G. I. Jane!") and Will Smith is just totally unyielding. He's got to make sure he comes off as both angry and principled and also completely controlled and it's just, it's such a great example of a thwarted power play on this enormous stage.
pretty sure I'm lecturing the prof, here, obviously, but just--aaaaugh the whole interaction sincerely feels like something that should be preserved in a museum display so that the layers of context can be unwrapped and understood to appreciate all the pieces, and white people making stupid fucking takes that ignore all of the very specific African-American experience pieces of it (not the least that hair documentary that Chris fucking Rock produced if I recall right) are. vexing.
Good god allllllll of this plus some. Again because like, Chris Rock is known for toeing the line of what he can get away with and so, knowing no one defends disabled people and no one defends black women and certainly no one defends any woman made out to be ugly- because there is an implied message of ugliness there.
The Smiths have had a very public eye on the situation with the cheating and so for Rock to stand on stage and point to her and call her "GI Jane" aka an ugly, mannish, brutish, bald woman knowing that Will is still smarting after the hordes of cuckhold jokes he's been subject to... there's this feeling of 'haha your wife's ugly now, you couldn't keep her when she was pretty do you think she'll stay now that she's ugly, maybe you'll cheat now that she's hideous, lol isn't that so funny' to it knowing their marriage problems are very, very much exposed to the public.
There's also the racial aspect of black women especially with shorter hair being called exactly that: ugly, brutish, mannish for not fitting white femininity. And Rock knows, he fucking KNOWS that, that's a racially charged statement to make and he did it anyway and this is why I'm constantly harping on how black people absolutely can further antiblackness despite being black themselves. Rock was raised by a black woman and he has black women in his life and he KNOWS and he chose to do it anyway because he thought it'd be funny and he'd get away with it because who confronts a comedian on live TV and especially at an awards show?
"he just said GI Jane" "it was just a joke" until you can fully understand the full context of that "joke" you will never understand why a lot of black people who saw that had the reaction of "Smith shouldn't have hit him but Rock was wrong for that one" or "if someone talked about my wife like that they'd get more than a slap".
yeah, I just wandered over to another community of mine and the goddamn pearlclutching over "violence is never the answer" there. (I waded in, because what the fuck, you're the same fucking community that went "YEAH GO THAT DUDE WHO PUNCHED RICHARD SPENCER.") At some point we do have to ask ourselves: what speech can we tolerate without directly responding, and what do you do when the person you are trying to deal with is not operating in good faith.
I am just! How the fuck! people.
there's also the layer in which by pulling that, Smith draws so much more attention to how unacceptable the joke is than he would by simply speaking about it. he is so much more emphatic by saying "not here, not now, not where I see." He gets so many more people talking about what an asshole Chris Rock is being, again, and he can hope that enough people explain the layers to really underscore how much Chris Rock knew what the fuck he was doing to people who aren't members of the African-American community that he and Chris Rock share. Like, how do you respond when someone is deliberately being as vicious as they can to you on a shared wavelength that a bunch of observing people don't have access to?
[Tweet from @/fozmeadows: "human gender and sexuality are very much like animal taxonomy, in that both look structured and simple on the surface, but once you start investigating, it turns out there's actually no such thing as a fish despite the fact that we all know what a fish is, and that's okay"]
As a biologist, that is a fantastic comparison.
We talk about “fish” (which, cladistically, do not exist, there is no monophyletic group of “fish” that simultaneously includes all organisms we understand to be “fish”-like while also excluding, say, humans) because, despite the utter fiction that is fish, it’s still a useful label when we talk about certain features that “fish” tend to have in common.
Gender is absolutely the same way.
