so if you don't know, there's different counting methods and the duodecimal finger counting has a base of 12 and allows you to count to 144 with your two hands.

your thumb is the pointer to count the bones in your fingers (i.e. 3 bones in 4 fingers, a total of 12) and you keep track of each full set with your other hand in the same way.

the way i remembered it as starting with the top digit of your index finger and go down and then across to the next finger — but when i did some quick research, i also saw starting from the top of the pinkie going down and across, and others starting from the index and going across the top digits,,,,,, soo. idk i suppose it depends on the orientation of your primary written language i.e. you read left to right so you count left to right and whatnot.

What's the first "big news story" you remember from when you were a kid?

It's something I love to ask mixed-aged groups sometimes because I think it's really interesting to see the responses. I've gotten answers from the Olympics of [whatever year] to Watergate to more recent stuff from my niblings.

My first news thing I remember is the OJ Simpson trial. I vaguely remember watching the news with my grandparents before that, but that's the first story I remember, in part because my second grade teacher had us go play so she could watch the verdict 😂

The Berlin Wall coming down. I was REALLY young and have only the faintest memories of those years in general, but I mostly remember my German grandparents, great-grandparents, and great-aunt gathering around their little TV and talking really fast in German (something the great-grands almost never did when they visited, and which I could not ever remember my grandfather, the only one not a first-generation immigrant or still resident of Germany, doing). I remember my impression of what was on TV looking to my preschooler eyes like some kind of construction project, and not really having any kind of real understanding of what had happened until years later. “The people who lived on one side can go to the other side now” didn’t seem like a big enough deal to make all these adults cry and holler like that.
