Fast, reckless driving often leads to slow, sad music
cannot emphasize enough how much of an impact i think brian dying had on paul & his interactions with his own queerness like i do genuinely think it's the first domino in why everything fell apart like it did for both him and john whether fully consciously or not.
but like...... here you had him hanging out with queer artists all the time (and with brian a Lot more in 67) and talking about how he's trying to get over 22 years of conditioning telling him what's good and bad. about how he wants to be more open with people. and also experimenting with psychedelics which is majorly view expanding
and then brian died. alone. stressed. unhappy. without a loving relationship. he'd already been hospitalized on several occasions for suicide attempts- no matter what the beatles said then and now, i have 0 doubt in my mind that they at least Feared he'd killed himself.
and i do think that really Really fucked up any exploration he might've been doing. because there's your answer, right there- what happens? you're alone, you're miserable, you'll be punished by the karmic law of the universe
and it's like....... while obviously paul's interest in the avant garde and the arts never fully left, you can see him pull away from that entire scene quite strongly. and you get things like him writing maxwell's silver hammer in india about karma. and spouting off about not being a 26 year old unmarried queer. no longer determined to let down that armor or tear down his years of conditioning
and i think he found that side of himself again later with linda, who let him let his guard down, but man.
anyway. fucked up. i think about it a lot
if i was drunk and also paul mccartney i would tweet mclennon was real and then turn off my phone
