Been a while since I've written a fic or done anything creative tbh, open to criticism, just be nice! Not proofread because I tried to make the deadline (and failed rofl) I'll proofread and repost at a later time. Word count: 825
Summary: Ritsu's psychic powers awaken at an earlier age. (gen fic)
Ritsu Kageyama, nine years old, grasping a spoon with his hand, dashes into his older brother room next door. He finds a ten-year-old Shigeo sitting by his futon, staring into space.
“Ritsu! What is it?” Shigeo asks curiously.
Ritsu sits right across Shigeo, and holds out the spoon on the palm of his hand. “Look at this!” He concentrates his eyes on the spoon before him. A few seconds pass. Sweat starts to form on his forehead. Then suddenly, the spoon slowly begins to contort on itself, coiling once, then twice… Then suddenly, in the blink of an eye, the spoon completely twists on itself like a firmly wrung wet towel.
“Whoah! Cool!” Shigeo exclaims in astonishment.
“Now I have psychic powers like you, nii-san! We can play together!” Ritsu giggles excitedly.
“I knew you could do it, Ritsu! You’re my brother after all.” Shigeo beams at his brother. It’s not often that he shows this much emotion. Ritsu can’t recall when was the last time he’s seen his brother look so happy.
However, after a few moments, Shigeo’s expression changes. “But… psychic powers are dangerous. Someone might get hurt if we play around with it…” Shigeo looks down on the ground with a concerned look. He appears deep in thought, perhaps thinking of something that happened in the past.
Ritsu shudders, knowing exactly what he’s thinking. The accident a few months ago… What he saw come out of his brother that day… Something inhuman. That same thing that landed them both in the hospital with stitches and a crying mother.
But it’s different now. Ritsu has psychic powers now. This time, he won’t be so weak.
“But nii-san, we’ll be careful! I promise.” (And if I have to, I bet I could even beat you in a fight!)
Shigeo looks at his brother’s determined expression, but he still can’t bring himself to agree with him.
“C’mon, don’t you wanna hang out together anymore, nii-san?” Ritsu pleads.
Ever since that incident, Shigeo had kept to himself and become silent. He had been spending most of his time indoors, reading manga, helping at home, or just plain spacing out. He would refuse Ritsu’s invitations to play outside or hang out with the other kids on the block. A lot of kids would ask Ritsu about the rumors of his brother being able to levitate stuff, but Shigeo would never agree to show them tricks anymore. Ever since then, Shigeo was gone, and Ritsu missed his brother.
“Hmm… Well, if Ritsu’s around, I think we’ll be fine. You’re always so responsible after all.”
“All right! Nii-san, can you show me some of your tricks? I bet I could do them too!”
The two brothers spend the rest of the day playing with all sorts of objects at home. Initially, Ritsu focuses on bending spoons into different shapes, but he quickly realizes that psychic powers didn’t only work on spoons. He then tries to levitate heavier items—first a book, then a chair, a table, then the couch; but the lattermost he could only lift for a few seconds. In response to Ritsu’s dismay, Shigeo gives full praise and encouragement, promising that Ritsu that he would definitely get stronger over time. Upon his brother’s request, Shigeo shows off other cool tricks that he hasn’t done in a while, like levitating streams of water from the faucet and forming different shapes of water in suspension.
By dinner time, the boys are called downstairs to eat, and they excitedly share over the dinner table to what they’ve been up to the whole afternoon. The Kageyama parents are already used to strange things happening in the household; the addition of one more esper in the house is but a delightful surprise. “Two esper sons, huh! What are the odds?” their father remarks, while reading the newspaper. “No wonder we’ve been missing spoons,” their mother retorts. “Don’t forget to return them when you’re done playing, boys!”
As if right on cue, Shigeo’s spoon bends over just as he’s about to take a gulp, spilling its contents to his porridge bowl. “Allow me, nii-san.” Ritsu takes Shigeo’s spoon, and with telekinesis, bends it back into shape. “Thanks Ritsu! Let’s play again tomorrow!”
BEEP BEEP. BEEP BEEP. BEEP BEEP.
Ritsu’s eyes open wide to the loud ringing of his alarm clock. He promptly shuts it off. For some reason, he feels like he slept too long. He makes up his bed as usual and changes into his uniform. As Ritsu moves to grab his schoolbag lying on the chair, he notices a spoon on top of his study desk. After a few seconds of thought, he lets go of his bag and sits down in front of the desk. He grasps the stainless-steel spoon in front of him, staring intently, as if trying to make something happen. A few seconds pass. Then another. But nothing.
As expected, it was just a dream.
I don't really expect anyone to have made it this far, but if you did, thanks for reading! :D comments, criticism welcome
