Fired up! Ready to go!
President Obama set a good tone in this message in the aftermath of the Trayvon Martin verdict where opinions diverge widely and wildly. He acknowledged that we all must understand that there is an historical context that frames the opinions of black Americans in a case like this. That context is different than for whites. But what can we do once we make this acknowledgement? He said to look at our youth today and recognize that things are better now than they were fifty years ago. I was around, and Obama’s statement is fact. He asked white people to look in the mirror and think about how they judge situations, and people, and ask themselves are they being too harsh or unfair. I hope they will listen. I, as a black person, will also look in the mirror and ask am I doing all that I can to leave some of my bitterness of past events in the closet when I hit the pavement every day. Perhaps so I don’t feel as weighted down and can do a little more to lift a young person up. He made me realize more than ever it is our youth we must focus on.

I heard Michelle Alexander speak on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr Day in January at Vanderbilt University. She gave a motivating talk, her ad libs were great and she answered all of the tough questions. I din't think she could be any better live than she is on YouTube, but she was, and that is saying something.

April is Stress Awareness Month. According to Mayo Clinic psychiatrist, Daniel K. Hall-Flavin, M.D., chronic stressful life situations can increase the risk of developing depression, if you aren't coping with the stress well. The World Health Organization says depression will be the 2nd leading cause of disability and death worldwide by 2030 (up from 4th today—see pg 34). A task force of U.S. clinicians from leading medical schools recommends screening of adolescents (12–18 years of age) for major depressive disorder when systems are in place to ensure accurate diagnosis, psychotherapy, and follow-up.
Separately, a study of U.S. adults found among the groups that tended to be depressed were:
blacks, Hispanics, non-Hispanic persons of other races;
persons with less than a high school education;
individuals unable to work or unemployed; and
persons without health insurance coverage
I am also aware, through my work in cancer patient advocacy that the mental health of those caring for a loved one may suffer due to their caregiving responsibilities, and the resulting stress. Strength for Caring, a Johnson & Johnson Initiative, has published an entire section on how to reduce stress, manage multiple responsibilities, and find time to care for you as well as your loved one.
