“--My dear, you aren’t dumb. I wasn’t suggesting that anyone was dumb,” was what you said. “I just wish the world wasn’t the way it was now. Of course, that’s just the opinion of a crazy old man.” You offered Nicole a smile as you placed your glass down onto the table separating the two of you.

“--From what I can tell, Nicole, you are a very smart young lady. You always try your hardest, and deserve everything life has to offer.”

“ Hey! Quit bothering him! ” She shouts, as she lands a high kick on two men that she saw harassing this old man. That was no way to treat the elderly!

You were a tad startled--to say the least--from the young lady’s sudden appearance. Her entrance was effective however, in which the two younger men hassling you grabbed their stuff and ran off after regaining their composure from her kick. 

It was impressive, yes, but unorthodox.

“--Oh my,” you mouthed. “You should be more careful, my dear! What if you missed and went crashing into the wall? You’d hurt yourself.”

“--Oh my,” you grumbled. “I’m torn between a casserole and baked ziti.”

“Wait really? Thank you a lot! It means more than you know! Well uh I guess so, my legs sort of moved on their own anyways so I don’t know how much credit I should get.” His face quickly gained a smile but soon he got a curious expression replacing it. “Hey you seem sort of familiar actually, you’re not a hero are you?”

He seemed like a good kid. No wonder that man decided to pick him as his replacement. 

“--Ah,” you mouthed. “So you ran head first without thinking? That shows just how strong willed you are.”

When he mentioned you looking familiar, your grip on the cane tightened--and you straightened up somewhat. Well, as best as someone your age could.

“--I haven’t been one of those for a long time,” you said with a dry chuckle. “I consider myself very, very retired.”

“--And my generation thought we were making the world easier for you kids,” you mumbled. “Apparently we didn’t do jack.” Disgruntled, you reached for your own drink and brought it to your lips.

You should really stop drinking coffee.

“--I won’t keep you if you’re tired,” you then said. “Would you like for me to call you a ride home?”

“--On the contrary,” you said. “I think without your actions that young man might have been hurt, or even worse.” With the aid of your cane you hobbled over to him, and placed your hand on his shoulder. “I think you did the right thing.”

Of all the jobs to be assigned to for the day, it had to be babysitting some old kook. How could watching an old man be more important than helping other police officers take down robbers at a bank? How? Why would the chief of police put the one “super human” they knew on a task like this and say it would greater than doing actual field work? Just, why?

Regardless, this little hesitance to help the forces is what kept her grades up enough to keep her mom off her back, so she had no choice but to go through with it. Looking down at a crinkled piece of paper with a scribbled address, the blonde sighed and moved forward towards the rather luxurious and well kept pent house. Was this guy some sugar daddy or something? Jesus. None the less, Minako found herself in front of the door, motioning towards the door bell buzzer to announce her arrival.

“–Mr. um…Brizz? This is your stand in care taker for the day, sent specially by the police force. Are you able to walk, or should I let myself in?”

Today had been like any other. You woke up rather early, made yourself some coffee, prepared lunch, watched some television, and then went out for a walk--if only to gather the supplies necessary for dinner.

You were about to slice into a fresh tomato when you heard your apartment’s obnoxious doorbell. 

“--Now who could that be,” you said to no one in particular. You were alone, after all. With a huff you left your counter top, removed your apron, and placed it on your kitchen table as you hobbled passed it. You made sure to grab your cane before venturing farther out of your kitchen.

When you reached the door you unlocked it, and opened it just enough to see the young woman’s face on the other side.

“--Stand in?” you ask. “Is Sammy not coming tonight?” What a bother. You had worked so hard on dinner for the two of you, too. Damn. “Ah, well,” you mumbled. “I see. Won’t you come in, my dear?”

You fully unlocked the door, opened it, and took a step to the side--to allow the young girl passage.

“--Oh my,” you began. “Christmas is right around the corner. I swear the month only started the other day...”

            “C’mon now…” She trails off, sighing and shaking her head. “I’m just worried about you is all. No need to be such a baby about it. I can show you some of my favorite recipes with secret hidden veggies in ‘em.” And then she stops, fighting back a sigh and running a hand through her hair. “I gotta worry about you since you clearly don’t care that much. You may be sturdy, but…you gotta make sure to take care of yourself now more than ever.”

“--I appreciate that,” you said--with a much warmer smile. “Trust me when I saw that I’m fine. This isn’t my first trip to the hospital, and it won’t be my last. How else are those money hungry doctors supposed to make a living? They prey on the old, of course. My dear, you don’t even want to know how many prescription drugs I'm currently on.” You offer a soft chuckle--to lighten the mood. “If you have some recipes to share, I’ll gladly listen. Maybe one day this week you wouldn’t mind coming over to my place?”

“ Please, accept this. –Besides, you looked hungry. ” Hands him a sweet potato that’s been wrapped in aluminum foil. She grinned, and opened her own so that she cold bite into the hot goodness. Her tongue burning immediately. OUCH.

You openly accept the free meal, and make sure to hold it in such a way that you wouldn’t burn yourself. If only the young lady standing before you was aware enough to do the same. She must have burned her tongue--by how sudden her reaction was to biting down on the potato. “--Dear me,” you said. “Did it burn you? You have to eat slow, otherwise that will happen. Especially with hot foods.”

“--She won’t be dressing up much, for anything, anymore,” came your reply. You seemed frozen for a moment--as if your own words had hurt you somehow. It took you a moment to realize this, which in turn made you reach up to scratch at your wildly beard. “Ah, a-anyway,” you began. “A knight sounds interesting. I’ve never met one before. Do you think they can see with all that armor on them?”
