“young adult dystopian novels are so unrealistic lmao like they always have some random teenage girl rising up to inspire the world to make change.”
a hero emerges
And just like in the novels, grown men and women are going out of their way to destroy her. Support our hero.
And it’s not even like it doesn’t happen regularly.
Teenage girls are amazing.
Sometimes they’re not even teenagers
Reblog every time a girl is discredited/ignored
I know that it’s not always easy to recognize this, but the truth is that a lot of the mental illnesses we talk about on tumblr are things that can actively be manageable if you’re willing to put in the effort. We’re not as helpless as people would seem to believe. And I hope that’s encouraging somehow.
Listen I know you guys hate to hear anything that says you are capable and responsible for your own mental health, but I haven’t spent the last 24 years dealing with clinical depression, an anxiety disorder, an eating disorder, and ptsd for y’all to try and tell me I just don’t know what I’m talking about. There are ways to manage these things both on and off medication if you’re willing to take the time and effort to learn how to do it. I’m probably never going to be “cured” of any of these things, but I am learning how to actively manage them; I am learning how to not let them rule my life. If you give into this idea that there’s just nothing you can do and just wallow in it then yeah you’ll never get better, but if you dedicate yourself to learning how to manage these things, your life will be infinitely better for it. It’s not easy and you’ll never be perfect, sometimes you’ll fail spectacularly at managing these things and that’s ok as long as you get back on track later. I know intimately the hopeless that comes with depression, and I know that everyone’s journey is different but deciding that you won’t be ruled by your illnesses is a great place to start when looking at learning how to manage them.
No. Hollywood has an older man problem.
this is so gross
I wish I could remember the name of the actress who went ballistic after being told that, at 35, she was too old to play the love interest for the 55-year-old lead.
It was Maggie Gyllenhall. And I stand corrected, she was 37.
sometimes you say or do bad things while you’re in an awful mental place. sometimes you say things that are rude or uncalled for or manipulative. and i’m not going to hold that against you. mental illness is hard, and no one is perfect. but once you’re through that episode, you need to take steps to make amends. you need to apologize.
“i couldn’t help it, i was having a bad episode” is a justification, not an apology.
“i’m so fucking sorry, i fucked up, i don’t deserve to live, i should stop talking to anyone ever, i should die” is a second breakdown and a guilt trip. it is not an apology.
when you apologize, the focus should be on the person you hurt. “i’m sorry. i did something that was hurtful to you. even if i was having a rough time, you didn’t deserve to hear that,” is a better apology. if it was a small thing, you can leave it at that.
if you caused significant distress to the other person, this is a good time to talk about how you can minimize damage in the future. and again, even if it is tempting to say you should self-isolate and/or die, that is not a helpful suggestion. it will result in the person you’re talking to trying to talk you out of doing that, which makes your guilt the focus of the conversation instead of their hurt.
you deserve friendship, and you deserve support. but a supportive friend is not an emotional punching bag, and mental illness does not absolve you of responsibility for your actions. what you say during a mental breakdown doesn’t define you. how you deal with the aftermath though, says a lot.
This is the most carefully-nuanced discussion of this I think I have ever seen. Thank you for writing this.

so you dated the wrong person and learned a hard lesson. you chose the wrong major and had to start over again. you cherished a friend who backstabbed you. it sucks, but it’s also going to work out. that’s life; you learn, hurt, love, cry, laugh, and keep going. you experience setbacks and you grow and it’s all okay.
“Both sides” journalism needs to die.
A journalist’s job isn’t to create false equivalencies.
A journalist’s job isn’t to be a stenographer for the police.
A journalist’s job isn’t to promote corporations.
I’m not a journalist, but I thought their job was to report the truth and the facts.
It’s not biased to point out when people lie or give false information. It’s biased to simply parrot their words and present them as trustworthy and reliable sources.
Journalists should be biased, toward facts and the truth.
White fanboys are racist af. Nobody is “stealing” roles away from poor white actors. Are you fucking kidding me? Scarlett Johansson can be an Asian anime character and have their full support, but Zendaya portraying Mary Jane Watson? Or Laura Ruth Harrier playing Liz Allan? And Anna Diop playing an orange alien? Apparently THAT’S just wayyy too much for their tiny, little, racist “brains” to handle. They just need to admit they hate black people and go.
Eventually you hit that point where you’re no longer interested in convincing people that how you feel and who you are is valid and decide that as long as you know your truth and what works for you, that’s what matters.
“It’s tricky, because Janelle and I are just really private people and we’re both trying to navigate how you reconcile wanting to have that privacy and space, and also wanting to use your platform and influence,” says Thompson. “I can take things for granted because of my family – it’s so free and you can be anything that you want to be. I’m attracted to men and also to women. If I bring a woman home, [or] a man, we don’t even have to have the discussion.” She pauses in her dissection of a chunk of avocado toast, and puts down her knife and fork. “That was something I was conscientious of in terms of this declaration around Janelle and myself. I want everyone else to have that freedom and support that I have from my loved ones,” she continues. “But so many people don’t. So, do I have a responsibility to talk about that? Do I have a responsibility to say in a public space that this is my person?” Certainly, the internet would very much like that. There are countless stories dedicated to detailing their every outing, and searching for significance in their chosen outfits. Thompson is tickled when I mention this, and seems unfazed. “We love each other deeply,” she says. “We’re so close, we vibrate on the same frequency. If people want to speculate about what we are, that’s okay. It doesn’t bother me.”
