Oats Studios Release Another Short
Welcome one and all. The fantastic "Oats Studios" has released another short. If you aren't familiar with the studio, "Oats Studios" is the brainchild of Neill Blomkamp and is a way of showing his immense talent. I posted an article last week after the first short was released online which was entitled "Rakka" now another short has been released entitled "Cooking With Bill - Damasu 950". This is a twisted take on the infomercial and is hilariously dark. check it out below:
Before I Wake (2016)
Welcome one and all to my review of the 2016 horror film "Before I Wake". Before I begin I would suggest you check out my previous posts on Oats Studios, Eighteen Visions, Happy Death Day, Dario Argentos Inferno or just checking out the many other posts available on my blog at Welcome To Prime Time. As always if you have any comments or feedback leave a comment in the section at the bottom of the post. "Before I Wake" is yet another fantastic "Netflix" own horror/thriller release written and directed by Mike Flanagan who has had a great record of fantastic horror releases in the past few years including: "Occulus", "Hush" and "Ouija:Origin Of Evil". "Before I Wake" follows the story of Mark and Jessie, who adopt a young boy by the name of Cody after their own child died in tragic circumstances. Strange things begin to happen as the young boys dreams begin to manifest themselves in real life. All seems beneficial to the grieving couple until the dreams begin to take a dark turn. I really enjoyed "Before I Wake" which I watched through streaming service "Netflix" I am a huge fan of Flanagan's other work and I am glad that I took a chance on this film. I am glad in a genre filled with cheap "cash in" sequels, prequels and spin offs there is still original story telling being released. That's not to say that "Before I Wake" didn't have a few issues. I felt that the film fell into the quiet/loud tropes that have dominated modern horror cinema. Instead of a menacing visual feast I was subjected to cheap jump scares which is a shame as the visual effects were handled well. The character of "Cancer Man" was a terrifying spectacle enough without the cheap jumps and overly loud sound effects. The visual flourish of butterflies was a great addition and really creates some beautiful visuals. The acting in "Before I Wake" was of a good standard throughout. Kate Bosworth's performance was pretty generic at the beginning of the film but, as the story progressed I began to warm to her. Thomas Jane was OK; I felt he had a permanent look of shock on his face which was a tad strange. I won't even mention his questionable wig choice. The real star of the show was Jacob Tremblay. At a mere 10 years old during production his performance in such a film is nothing short of outstanding. His mix of vulnerability and charm is a pleasure to watch and I look forward to great things from him. The plot of "Before I Wake" was a strange mix of melodrama and horror. It felt a little disjointed at times and really felt like two separate stories could have been told. As I said I really enjoy original story telling in the horror genre and "Before I Wake" is a clear example of this. The idea of "If someones dreams could come true, would you use that for your own gain ?" is an interesting and thought provoking premise. I felt heart break for Mark and Jessie as they deal with the grief of losing a child and how they are trying to piece their lives back together. the pacing of the film allows for a great arc to be told until the third act unfolds perfectly and fills in all of the blanks of Cody's tragic past and how the "Cancer Man" came to live in his dreams. Overall "Before I Wake" is a fantastic example of not only a unique and original voice in horror cinema but, also a great example of the quality of release that "Netflix" is able to release with one platform. I would highly recommend you not only check out "Before I Wake" but, also Mike Flanagan's other releases. Thank you for reading and as always you can let me know what you think by leaving a comment below or by following me on social media by clicking one of the links at the right hand side of the my home page.
Oats Volume 1 Arrives And Is Magnificent
Welcome one and all. I recently posted a trailer for the first of "Oats Studios" output. If you don't know what that is, Neill Blombkamp has taken to releasing short films online. The first is entitled "Rakka" and I must say if this doesn't prove that Blombkamp is one of the finest science fiction and hell even one of the best film makers in general I don't know what will. Enjoy:
Shameless Promotion Part 9: Eighteen Visions
Welcome one and all to part 9 of my "Shameless Promotion" series. I have spoken about everything from podcasts to films with the previous two articles about films; "XX" and "Prevenge" respectively. This article will be about a band very close to my heart: "Eighteen Visions". Picture this if you will. The year is 2005 and I am an 18 year old kid that had recently taken the step to become "Straight Edge". This was a huge step in my life as I had liked to drink to excess and smoked quite heavily too. As cheesy as it sounds it was music, and the music of "Minor Threat" that brought the "Straight Edge" philosophy to my attention. I had listened to bands like "The Misfits" and "Black Flag" for a little while but "Minor Threat" struck a chord. After that I fell down the rabbit hole, looking for "Straight Edge" bands and "Hardcore" bands a like. I discovered "Bleeding Through", "Throwdown", "Most Precious Blood" and "Eighteen Visions" all on the same "Trustkill Records" DVD compilation (Remember DVD Compilations ?). My mind exploded, I fell in love with all of those bands and had to buy all of their music straight away. Thanks to a poorly used student loan and bursary pretty soon I was in possession of a great deal of CD's purchased through eBay or countless hours perusing through HMV or local record shops. Whilst I loved all of the bands "Eighteen Visions" were the band that struck me the most. They were good looking guys, who dressed well but, played weird and disjointed music that didn't really sound like anything else. Fast forward nearly 15 years and I'm now 30 years old and I feel like a kid again with the release of "Eighteen Visions" new album "XVIII". I was extremely excited when the band announced they had reformed and later announced their new album. I was quick to re listen to all of their old albums on my iPod classic and all of the memories came flooding back. I have waited patiently for my CD to come and after listening to the whole thing I am delighted that the band have reformed. "XVIII" is a fantastic mix of all of the previous "Eighteen Visions" releases; dark, melodic and brutally heavy in equal measure. Looking over the art work I was struck by the incredibly touching tribute to former bass player, Mick Morris, who passed away in 2013 and listening to "Live Again" shows that his memory will live on. "Eighteen Visions" have a great back catalogue of music starting with the album "Until The Ink Runs Out" filled with brutal riffs and a unique style. "Vanity" came next with a cool mixture of melodic vocals, heavy riffs and films quotes for days. The album that brought the band to my attention is "Obsession" the melodic vocals became more prominent in this release that brought the band to prominence. I can still remember all of the words to "I Let Go". The final release before the bands spilt was "Eighteen Visions" which was a much more "radio friendly" sound for the band that is still pretty great, in my opinion. Go and give "Eighteen Visions" a chance. I would suggest just consuming all of their back catalogue over and over again. I might not be able to style my hair or "pull off" the guy liner and black nail polish look anymore but, "Eighteen Visions" will always have a huge spot in my heart. Thanks again for reading and if you have anything to add leave a comment below or follow me on social media.
Happy Death Day Trailer Online Now
The first full trailer for "Happy Death Day" has appeared online. This is the new movie for Christopher Landon, director of the last "Paranormal Activity" film. It will be released through "Blumhouse" and "Universal". On first viewing "Happy Death Day" is a "Groundhog Day" for horror fans which is an interesting concept. Watch the trailer below and let me know what you think by leaving a comment:
Short Films To Catch Your Eye
I really should post these in a "Shameless Promotion" article but I really want to let the films themselves do the talking. First up is a short entitled "Fabricated Existence" by Matt Turner. This is a fantastic display of sound design and well worth a watch:
Second up is a short horror film that has been around for a little while entitled "The Smiling Man" which is genuinely creepy. I discovered this when I tracked down the "Lights Out" shirt that's spawned the full length feature last year. Check out the short by Michael Evans below:
The final short is another horror by a filmmaker called Danny Donahue entitled "The Moonlight Man" which is great example of great suspense horror and great use of practical effects. Check it out below:I
I've Never...Seen Dario Argentos Inferno
Welcome one and all to the latest instalment of "I've Never..." series exploring things I haven't experienced in my life. If you have been reading the series there seems to be a recurring theme of watching films I've never seen other than anything else. If there is anything you think I should be writing about feel free to make a suggestion in the comment section below or by following one of the links on the right hand side of my homepage. This instalment of "I've Never..." is talking about the criminally under rated Dario Argento film "Inferno". Dario Argento is considered one of the finest horror film directors of all time having written and directed such classics as "Suspiria", "Demons" and "Deep Red". in 1977 Argento wrote and directed the cult classic "Suspiria" a tale of murder and suspense which forged the first part of the so called "Three Mothers Trilogy" the second of which is "Inferno". Whilst the 3 films, the final part being 2007s "The Mother Of Tears", are not conventional sequels, they follow similar themes. "Inferno" follows the story of Rose Elliot, a poet living in New York who stumbles upon a book entitled "The Three Mothers" written by an architect by the name of Verelli. The book mentions the story of "The Three Mothers" who rule the world from three separate houses, one in Freiburg, one in New York and one in Rome. Rose suspects she may be living in the very house she has read about. She contacts her brother, Mark, who is studying musicology in Rome, to tell him of this fact. What comes next is a decent into a horrific world of murder, intrigue and witchcraft told in a way only Argento could do. I purchased "Inferno" through Amazon. I bought the fantastic remastered version on Blu Ray that was released through "Arrow Films" and with every "Arrow Films" release there are some fantastic special features including an Q and A's, a special documentary about "The Black Cat" the unofficial sequel and a full colour booklet talking about "Inferno" I loved "Inferno" I would go as far as saying I preferred it to "Suspiria" The story was incredibly suspenseful thanks to an almost operatic score that drove and boomed as the suspense built. The usual Giallo style is present through out. The horror is almost secondary to the crime and suspense in the story. When the bloodshed comes it is brutal in a simplistic way that is lost now with the more realistic gore of modern horror cinema. There is blood and gore but, in an almost tasteful manner that whilst was detested when the film was made would be seen as tame to the modern audience. The fantastical style of lighting and staging is present throughout. The trademark red purple and blue colour pallet of Giallo and Argento films play an important part in appreciating the surroundings. The use of shadow is also present, almost hiding and distorting the view of the action from the audience. This is Argento at his best and whilst I am talking about "Inferno" I would highly recommend you watch "Suspiria" and "Deep Red" as well as they are fantastic, stylish horror films with terrific scores. I would also recommend the two "Demon" films as well as they really show a great balance of Argentos earlier work whilst embracing modern horror cinema. As always thanks for reading and if you have anything to add or to make a comment leave one below in the comment section or by following me on social media: Facebook Twitter Instagram
WWE Money In The Bank 2017 Preview And Predictions
Welcome one and all to my preview and prediction blog for the "Smackdown Live" exclusive live special, "Money In the Bank". This is usually my favourite non "Big 4" live special as I'm a sucker for a ladder match. There are some notable missing names from the final card such as; American Alpha, Tye Dillinger, Aiden English and Breezango. There has not been a pre show match announced as of writing so I would think at least two of those names may be featured in the pre show. As always if you have any comments or thoughts leave them in the comment section below or by following me on social media by clicking one of the links at the right hand side of my homepage. 1. Smackdown Live Tag Team Championship: The Usos (C) Vs. The New Day: There is something strange going on in the tag division on "Smackdown Live" at the moment. From the day that "American Alpha" won the championships the tag division seems to have been all but forgotten. That being said it's not because they don't have the talent to provide the audience with good or even great matches. "The Ascension", "Breezango", and "American Alpha" are all credible teams to have a good run with the championships. Instead The New Day have been placed on the "Smackdown Live" to become the figureheads of the division and hopefully elevate the division to where it should be. This match will be a decent enough one as both teams are great and have proven themselves time and time again. Expect some fast paced action and a lot of under handed tactics. I would like to see a feud between these two teams build but, I have a funny feeling that "The New Day" may come out on top. 2. Smackdown Live Womens Championship: Naomi (C) Vs. Lana: I have no idea what is going on in the women's division right now. I keep being told that Naomi is one of the best athletes in the "WWE" at the moment, and is barely featured on "Smackdown Live". This is a shame as she has been entertaining to watch however, I feel she would have been better used as part of the first ever women's "Money In The Bank" match. Lana has arrived to a lot of pomp and circumstance on "Smackdown Live" and is being pushed far too quickly, in my opinion. This is probably going to be early on the card and will probably be forgotten about as soon as the first entrance of the "Money In The Bank" match happens. I think Naomi will retain and Lana will maybe prove herself. 3. Womens Money In the Bank Match: Charlotte Flair Vs. Becky Lynch Vs. Natalya Vs. Tamina Vs. Carmella: This is historic and will do nothing but prove how great the women's division is in not only "Smackdown Live" but, the entire "WWE" as a whole. There has to be the discussion as to who would benefit from being the holder of the most sought out briefcase in the wrestling. I personally don't think Charlotte or Becky would benefit from holding the case, not because I don't think either of them don't deserve it but, simply because it wouldn't lift their profile. I think either Natalya or Carmella would be the most likely winners of this match. This would boost their profile and push them to the forefront. 4. WWE Championship: Jinder Mahal (C) Vs. Randy Orton: Nobody was as surprised as I was when Jinder Mahal won the "WWE" Championship from Randy Orton last month at "Backlash". Whatever the reason is that the "WWE" has given Mahal the championship he really has run with it. He has gone from being a forgettable mid card guy to one of the top "heels" on the "Smackdown Live" roster. Randy Orton seems to be doing nothing but going through the motions just now. This will be a strange one and I would expect that Mahal would retain and, depending on where this match is placed on the card, he may have another match that night. 5. Money In The Bank Match: Kevin Owens Vs. Dolph Ziggler Vs. Shinsuke Nakamura Vs. Baron Corbin Vs. Sami Zayn Vs. AJ Styles: This has to be one of the most anticipated matches on "Smackdown Live" since the brand split last year. This is a fantastic mix of talent that shows that the "Blue Brand" can survive just fine without "Big Match John". The same questions I asked of the women's match needs to be asked: Who benefits most from having the briefcase ? There could be an argument for every person in this match but, think logically for a minute. Both Styles and Owens have been champions in the past and would theoretically be in the championship picture regardless of winning the match. Nakamura and Ziggler have been in a feud recently and adding the case could do good things for an ongoing feud if that was what was planned. the same goes for Zayn and Corbin, adding the case could make for an exciting turn in their feud. I really can't pick a decisive winner but, I think either Corbin or Nakamura could be the likely winners. Thanks for reading and enjoy "Money In The Bank" as always if you have any thoughts leave a comment below or follow me social media to tell what you think. Facebook Twitter Instagram
Flatliners Trailer Proves It May Well Be A Good Day To Die Again
The first trailer for the "Flatliners" remake has appeared online. Whilst I'm not the most die hard fan of the original, I'm really sceptical of yet another remake. The trailer shows that there is a lot of Visual flair and the original premise seems to be in place. Hopefully I'll be proven wrong and this won't be another style over substance remake. If you have any input leave a comment below or follow me on social media by clicking one of the links on my homepage.
The Gracefield Incident Trailer Seems Like A Weird Mash Up
If you follow this blog or my social media I am a huge fan of horror movies. Whilst there has been a trend recently of over produced, style over substance genre movies I am always willing to give horror movies a try. The trailer for "The Gracefield Incident" appeared on my "YouTube" watch list and I watched it. What I was faced with was a weird mash up of a short from "V/H/S 2" titled "Phase 1: Clinical Trials" which was directed by Adam Wingard and "Extraterrestrial" which was directed by The Vicious Brothers. Take a look for yourself and as always leave a comment below or follow me on social media.
Black Panther Trailer Has Arrived
The new trailer for "Black Panther" has appeared online. Whilst we've seen the character before in "Captain America:Civil War" there has been a lot of anticipation for the stand alone "Black Panther" movie. There's a lot of action packed into a little trailer so watch and enjoy. Shameless Promotion Part 8: Prevenge (2016)
Welcome one and all to the latest instalment to my feature "Shameless Promotion". Previously I have promoted everything from "Raleigh Ritchie" to "Lore" to "This Is PROGRESS" and the previous part was about "XX". Since the last part a previous promotion "This Is PROGRESS", the "Kickstarter" project to make a documentary about the "PROGRESS" wrestling promotion was successfully funded. A huge congratulations to all involved. I would like to invite anyone that has any suggestions as to what I should be talking about or you have a project, band, website, service I should promote leave a comment below or contact me through social media by clicking on the links on the right hand side of the homepage. This part of "Shameless Promotion" is about the 2016 dark comedy film "Prevenge". There are many things that are impressive about "Prevenge" but, the fact that Alice Lowe wrote, directed and was the main star of the film is really impressive oh and she was also pregnant when making the film. Whilst we all feel a little lazy about ourselves let me continue. "Prevenge" is the story of Ruth, a heavily pregnant mother to be who has lost her partner to a tragic climbing accident. She begins a campaign to track down all of the people involved with the accidental death of her partner, being spurred on by her unborn foetus. And if that sounds insane, it really is a sight to behold. I cannot be more positive about "Prevenge" this is really British film making at it's best. Alice Lowe has crafted such a brilliant story, as gut wrenchingly sad as it is darkly humorous. at a mere 88 minutes run time the action comes thick and fast. As I mentioned earlier Alice Lowe was pregnant whilst making "Prevenge" and that in itself makes some of the scenes that little bit more incredible. Lowe is in nearly every scene and dominates all of the scenes where she is playing off of someone which is a mean feet considering such talent as Kayvan Novak, Katie Dickie and Tom Davis are in pivotal scenes. "Prevenge" is considered a dark comedy and I would say that it is pitch black. The type of laughs it created when I was watching were really awkward ones, almost like I felt guilty about laughing. The tone is incredibly bleak at times dealing with the obvious themes of death and loss but, also isolation. Alice appears insecure and depressed masking it with bravado. It would be easy to compare "Prevenge" to ""Sightseers" both feature Alice Lowe and heavy a darkly comedic side however, I feel that "Prevenge" might be the stronger film. It is daring to deal with such themes as loss and isolation in a film about pregnancy. Nobody wants to portray these themes onscreen as it would be deemed "controversial" but, Lowe has created such a great balance of comedy and drama. Overall I cannot recommend "Prevenge" enough. Go into the film with an open mind, whilst it may not be for everyone I think it's an important film in both style and content. An incredibly daring film made by a huge talent. As always if you have any comments or feedback leave a comment below or by following me on social media. Thanks for reading.
Wonder Woman (2017)
Welcome one and all to my review for "Wonder Woman". Before I begin I will try my best and not reveal too many plot points and will actively avoid spoilers. As always if you have any comments or disagree with anything leave a comment below or by adding me on social media by following one of the links on the right hand side of the homepage. I just want to begin by saying I am a huge fan of the "DC Extended Universe" and "DC Comics" in general so my opinion may be a little skewed. Regardless of your opinions on the "DCEU" or controversies surrounding the outrage at all female screenings I think the fact that this film has brought a never before seen comic character, with a female director and the highest budget film for said female director and been able to do it not only with success but, early figures suggesting massive success should be celebrated. In a time where there shouldn't be boundaries and people should be rewarded for their skill and talent and not their gender or race I feel the success of this film will show that such attitudes are not only old fashioned but, unwarranted. "Wonder Woman" follows Diana of Themyscria, a young warrior princess on an island race of all women who saves the life of pilot and spy; Steve Trevor. Diana leaves the island with Trevor in order to stop the god of war, Ares, from executing a plan to start an unending war. "Wonder Woman" was directed by Patty Jenkins, her first feature since "Monster" in 2003 and written by chief creative officer at "DC Comics" Geoff Johns as well as Allan Heinberg; who worked on the ill fated "Wonder Woman" television pilot in 2012. What a breath of fresh air "Wonder Woman" is to the ailing "DCEU". Both "Man Of Steel" and "Batman Vs. Superman" have been heavily criticised for their dark, joyless tone, what "Wonder Woman" does is brings a mostly positive message to what could have been made to be a highly depressing film as it takes place in the height of World War 1. The story telling throughout feels a lot lighter in tone than the previous two "DCEU" films. There is a feel of "Captain America: the First Avenger", perhaps because of the similar setting but, it feels like a period piece rather than a superhero film. I loved how there was no real nods to the "DCEU", I feel sometimes a film can become bogged down with nods and references that die hard comic fans get but, the rest of the movie going audience don't get. a mere two references to "Batman" is all you get. The relationship between Diana and Steve is entertaining enough on screen however, I did feel that the romantic nature of the relationship wasn't really required. I would have been happy enough for them forming a bond without any romance, although I understand it is needed to set up the third act of the film. The action sequences are really well done in the first and second acts of the film, fast paced and short enough so they don't become the sole focus of the story. I did feel however, in the third act the action sequence and final face off was a little too much. Much in the same as "Batman Vs. Superman" and "Man Of Steel" there was a lot of destruction and explosions that just seemed a little over played. Gal Gadot is fantastic as Diana Prince, who interestingly is never referred to as "Wonder Woman" at all. She is engaging and likeable and plays the role with a great mix of strength, independence and naivety as you would expect from a woman coming from a sheltered life on a mythical island. Chris Pine is good in a supporting role, slightly too comedic at times but, good enough as a support to Gadot. David Thewlis is OK, I felt he was chewing the scenery a little by the end. That could have perhaps been down to his ever so slightly clunky dialogue. The other supporting cast including, Connie Neilsen and Robin Wright as the Antiope and Hippolyta are really great. I like that they are not just people helping the protagonist and are given decent back stories. Overall "Wonder Woman" was a great addition and perhaps even a jumping off point for the "DCEU" going forward. Gadot proves that Diana Prince is more than capable of holding her own alongside her male counterparts. I would be really interested in seeing where the character and the story would go next, if a more modern scenario would work as well as the historical. If "DCEU" films are made this well, with attention to deal and varied story telling styles I think the future could be brighter than once thought. Well worth a watch for comic fans and non comic fans alike. Great message of female empowerment showing that more female characters deserve a stand lone film, The only question now is can "Marvel Studios" replicate the same success with "Captain Marvel" ?
Oats Volume 1 Has My Interest Peaked
Neill Blomkamp has had varying success over the years with films like "District 9" and "Elysium" but, the one project that was always teased was a take on the "Alien" franchise featuring the Ripley character. A lot of time has passed and nothing has come to pass. That was until Blomkamp released a trailer for a series of test footage featuring Sigourney Weaver and Dakota Fanning title "Oats Volume 1" check out the trailer below:
Murder On The Orient Express Trailer Arrives
The first trailer for the upcoming "Murder On The Orient Express" film has appeared and displays its more than stellar cast. There have been many incarnations and versions of this Agatha Christie novel so only time will tell how good this big budget, Hollywood version will be.
I've Never...Seen A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night
Welcome one and all to the second instalment of "I've Never..." which is a series of articles that will talk about something that I have never seen, heard ...well you get the point. The first two articles have been about films but, as always, I encourage feedback and suggestions as to things I could write about. If there is anything you think I should watch etc leave a comment below of follow me on social media by clicking one of the links to the right of the home page. The second instalment of "I've Never..." will talk about the 2014 film "A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night" I had heard wonderful things about the film and bought it nearly a year ago from Amazon. Being a father and having a full time job doesn't allow for many days off that I am on my own but, as luck would have it, that's what I had yesterday and so I decided to watch "A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night" and I'm really glad I did. "A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night" was written and directed by Ana Lily Amirpour and follows Arash in a small town, Bad City, in Iran. He works hard to support himself and his drug addicted father. A chance meeting with a mysterious young woman leads to a whole new life for Arash, The Girl and everyone around them. The first thing to mention that the film reveals itself as a vampire film but, in the subtlest way. The film is in black and white so there is no real reliance on visceral imagery like so many clumsy vampire genre films. There is more reliance on sound design and presence rather than blood and guts in the same vein of "It Follows", "Under The Shadow" and "The Babadook" where just the thought of a dark presence is more than enough to fill the audience with dread. The film also has a brilliant soundtrack. There is little in the way of atmospheric music, which in my opinion, is missing from modern horror. There is too heavy a reliance of tones and clangs rather than a score however, when there is music in the scene it is perfect. There is a great mix of eastern and western influenced music by artists such as "White Lies", "Kiosk" and "Federale" that blend well. Character development is sparse however, I feel that was OK. I preferred the way the story was told in a concise way rather than bogging itself down in details and back story. I was also satisfied by the ending and the lack of definitive closure. The message of feminism is intelligently done without being too obvious. The male characters, whilst important, are over shadowed by the strong feminine presence which is a role reversal from the typical vampire film. There is sometimes a clumsy romance thrown in films like this and whilst there are undertones of love within "A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night" it is never really fully explored. Overall "A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night" was completely different to what I thought it would be and I mean that in the most positive of ways possible. Obvious storytelling interspersed with blood and guts was replaced with an intelligent social commentary and a wonderfully written vampire film. A real must for horror and non horror fans a like. Thanks for reading and always if you have any comments, observations or suggestions leave a comment below or follow me on social media.
