I think that was literally the original point of the band name. Like the title of the albums were meant to finish the sentence.

The only one it doesn’t really work for is Fast Times at Barrington High. I don’t know why they broke the format for that one.

For FEMCR and Girl Out Boy/Fall Out Grrl, you’ve gotta understand that any hate/scrutiny the members have received or been criticized for would be infinitely worse if they were women. (Also Frerard stage gay would probably not happen due to how lesbians are fetishized by the same men who would find men kissing disgusting.)

Like so bad, I don’t even know if they would’ve gotten a decent breakthrough because of the hostility they’d encounter in their local scene. Both of them started out in the post hardcore music scene of the late 90s/early 2000s, which was notoriously unwelcoming towards women (and yes FOB’s early sound was pop punk but all the members played in hardcore bands before joining FOB). MCR said that during their early days, the only bands that used to take them were Christian rock bands. Not to mention how they were mocked for not looking masculine enough, and for wearing makeup. Both bands were also undermined (and still are to an extent) for having huge female fan bases.

I think to some extent what draws people to FEMCR/Fall Out Girl is the fantasy of a world where alternative rock was dominated by women and not just women but masc presenting (usually queer) women.

If you genderswap the emo scene you get to play around in this version of the 2000s where (at least briefly) a group mostly female musicians are fronting warped tour and and being featured on the covers of giant rock magazines and playing sold out shows to giant crowds.

I really appreciate this interview with Willam Beckett where he’s asked about he stays thin and he just completely makes a joke out of the question. it’s nice that he didn’t share dieting tips or weight measurements in a time that really glorified disordered eating.
