“While Carlo Ancelotti attached little importance to speaking to players individually, [Rafa] Benítez is the polar opposite and the players see him as more of a teacher. He has made an impact with his desire to speak to players individually to correct mistakes and also in groups, usually split by position. He takes advantage of any small break in order to approach somebody.

Benítez also took the defence to one side to polish some details that were not to his pleasing. He lets his assistants do the work, takes a step back and observes. When the drill finishes, he comes on to the scene and mixes with the players in order to give them tips. […]

The first point of contact hinges on the players understanding the message that Benítez is transmitting to them. It is not an order, rather a dialogue in which he reasons with them.
