Things I wish I did differently while self studying a language

Note: this is of course completely based on my experiences and studying habits. I decided to make this list and share it in the hope people won’t make the same mistakes as me.

While Duolingo is great, it shouldn’t be your only resource. Start with books from early on, look for other apps/websites.

Don’t just write your vocabulary down, study it.

Verb conjugations are awful to study but you really will thank yourself later on

Listen to music, watch movies/series, look for children’s books online or buy them,…

SPEAK! Even when you’ve just started, you can try to make up easy sentences.

Write down grammar rules and use examples.

If you don’t know a word, look it up. If not immediately, later.

Keep a diary in your target language, it will help you understand the language.

Follow as many blogs as possible that post about your language.

If you don’t really have time to concentrate and study, skip studying for that day and study when you can concentrate.

Language Pen Pal project

Hi everyone!

My name is Tas, and I’m from Sydney, Australia. Recently, I was thinking to myself “how cool would a Pen Pal Project be, but with language exchange?” So I decided to launch The Bi-lingual Mingle Project! Basically you just put in your target language (or languages) and your language of fluency- to find someone who has allignent language goals. ie. I am currently studying Spanish but fluent in English so my Pen Pal would be studying English and fluent in Spanish! HI!! i'm having A LOT of trouble knowing the difference between using imparfait and passé composé. Could you please tell me easy ways i can distinguish them and when to use them in sentences, thanks!

1. imparfait answers “what was going on at that time?” regarding (mostly) a/ descriptions (les enfants jouaient dans le jardin), b/ an historical fact (les mineurs se blessaient souvent), c/ habits (elle jouait au golf chaque lundi). it sets the scene before DUN DUN DUN the thing happens (au passé composé).

(je -ais, tu -ais, il/elle/on -ait, nous -ions, vous -iez, ils/elles -aient)

2. passé composé answers “what happened?” regarding a specific action, often sudden, from the past and now over. it’s made with un auxiliaire (être or avoir) conjugé au présent + le participe passé of the verb you want to use. you build a participe passé by putting -é at the end of a first groupe verb (manger : mangé), -i for the second group (finir : fini), -u for verbs in -oir (savoir : su), -re (attendre : attendu), -ir verbs for the third group (courir : couru)… (more : x).

note 1 : you’ll know if a -ir verb is from the second or third group by checking the plurals. finir goes nous finissons, vous finissez, ils finissent, which makes it a second group verb. but courir goes nous courons, vous courez, ils courent and goes into the third group.

note 2 : if the auxiliaire is être, your participe passé is going to be conjugué. if your subject is masculine singular, nothing changes : il est tombé. if your subject is feminine, you will add -e, and if it’s plural, -s. so elle est tombée, ils sont tombés, elles sont tombées.

note 3 : imparfait (tense written with one word) is made with one word but passé composé (tense written with two words) is made with two words.

example :

tous les matins, mon chien descendait les escaliers en courant. un jour, il est tombé. alors, il a décidé de descendre en marchant tout doucement. 

every morning, my dog would go down the stairs running. one day, he fell. then, he decided he would go down walking slowly.

“tous les matins” shows you the former habit, “un jour” identifies a specific time and “alors” is the clue of a change in the dog’s behaviour.

Mommy by Xavier Dolan is a great Canadian film to help you practice your French while taking in the accent! It was actually shot in Quebec! My girlfriend made me watch it a couple times and I definitely did not cry. Nope.

The story follows a struggling single mother trying to care for her violent, unstable son without committing him to a hospital. Its definitely an emotional roller coaster and it won quite a few awards. its worth it guys.
