woke up today having yumi thoughts...
stream of consciousness here we go -- there really is no rhyme or reason to this, it's just random thoughts that have collected
largely a loner even within the yellowjackets but probably gravitates toward nat the most. the "burnout" culture is not that dissimilar to the "sukeban" culture that she had been steeped in until her family moved to wiskayok
also understands a lot of tai's neuroses of being a person of color, though they have sort of opposite journeys of yumi shedding the respectability while tai tries to chase it as much as she can -- irony for the adult timeline where yumi starts out similar to tai as a high-achieving, successful woman of color
would have joined tai's expedition south in the teen timeline because it's her nature to do something rather than sit around and wait
socially within the team, she floats between groups but doesn't have a fully settled place or person. she's cordial with everyone but she's very socially aware of the dynamics that are underlying every action because it reminds her of her time in tokyo. for that reason, she doesn't rock the boat, particularly with shauna, but she acts as a steady, silent presence if needed
in the adult timeline, she's in private security and i think it's not unreasonable that she was aware of both lottie and melissa and their locations. her paranoia and OCD would have her keeping tabs on everyone (not unlike misty) and using her resources to do so. she wouldn't do anything with that information unless it threatened her, but she would have it
largely absent from s1 shenanigans, despite having received a blackmail postcard from jiff, and doesn't show up until the reunion
sticks around after hearing about travis' death / the blackmail and teams up with misty when nat goes missing. tbh walter can be there too, yumi will just hate it twice as much
everything in lottie's compound goes down as it does in canon, except yumi is also there. afterwards, she goes back to the west coast to try and ward off bad press stemming from the incident and protect her company
s3 timeline, she's fighting with her board to keep control of her company. they use the s2 antics and the fact that yumi just disappeared for weeks as reasoning that she's unfit to be the head of the board
rather than fighting a lost cause, yumi finally gives in to the idea that this is what the wilderness has always wanted, for the yjs to finally recognize that they need to be together and feed the kami that they brought back with them (i never said she wasn't as crazy as the rest of them)
as mentioned above, i'd be interested in playing it in a way where yumi was aware that melissa was still alive and simply held that information close to her chest. as more of an outsider within the group, which is a feeling that compounded over the years that yumi kept herself isolated from the others, she would have had no reason to reveal that secret to the others -- mostly meant as a way of depicting yumi as standing on the fringes of this group with no fierce loyalty to a single group or person
when she hears shauna and the others are going to go find melissa, she tries to get there ahead of them to warn her. shauna arrives shortly after she does and assumes that melissa and yumi are in cahoots together while melissa assumes yumi led shauna to her
yumi tries to convince both of them that the wilderness wants them to work together, not against each other. melissa is rightfully like "you guys are nuts" and books it, but gets brought back by tai, van, and misty
yumi leaves with misty, realizing that this is not going to end well and if she wants her company back ever, she can't be at the scene of more shenanigans
after everything, tai calls yumi and misty to talk about shauna. when leaving the diner, yumi calls melissa unbeknownst to the others and tells her that they need to talk

He wakes up in complete darkness, surrounded by freezing cold. Fear claw at his heart, sink sharp ugly nails into his meat and bones — He should not wake at all. Nicky knew he was going to die; in the forest, the ashes of their cabin on his tongue, lungs painful and heavy, the metallic taste of blood constant in his throat. It was so cold, even under layers of furs and the fire of the cabin, he could not stop trembling. After, when they were out in the snow, no warmth — His time had run out. He knew it. He had known for a long time.
(Perhaps ever since Jackie — Nicky knew he was not cut for this.)
Nicky isn't meant to be here, walking amidst traffic, after having crawled out the morgue. He is meant to be dead, gone. Is this purgatory? Is he trapped in hell because of what they did to Jackie?
He doesn't know. All he knows is this feeling in his chest, wrapping around his legs — Tugging him to an worn down store, in the middle of a rainbow filled street. He hears a familiar voice calling to him, comfort just a breath away, but he doesn't know where he is. Doesn't know, when he steps inside the store with big doe green eyes, how many days have passed. Where they rescued? Was him in a coma? He sees a familiar shade of red, and his heart clenches
“Van?”
Over the last twenty-five years, Van Palmer has done a lot to rebuild the smashed remnants of their life they were left with. When they think about that time now, it has been packaged up into a neat story, with a beginning, a middle, and most importantly, an end. The secrets they left behind in those woods are meant to remain buried there, or so they believed.
In reality, those ghosts have haunted Van every single day since they got on another plane and sent back to reality. Some days, Van isn't sure which is the story and which is the truth. Even now, they wake some days with the smell of wood smoke in their nostrils and the rich, earthy tones that comes with living on top of one another, and they open their eyes to an empty apartment, warmed by gas and electricity rather than flame.
This second-third-whatever chance this is that they've been granted, Van is determined not to waste it. Sometimes it's the only thing forcing them up in the mornings to face the bills and the stares and the reality of life, knowing that they have this chance and so many others don't. After all, they are a storyteller at heart. What better role do they have in the world than to remember their friends' stories, the ones who aren't here to speak for themselves?
Their bones ache and creak as Van settles in front of the register for the morning shift, usually pretty dead except for a handful of moms running errands to drop off tapes. When the bell above the door rings, Van straightens up from where they were definitely not dozing, and takes a quick swig from their lukewarm coffee sitting on the counter. It doesn't help.
People know their name around a place like Oberlin, especially when they stand out as much as they do, so hearing their name isn't all that much of a surprise. But the voice is, and their head turns to stare at someone who is definitely a ghost. Nicky looks almost identical to the way he did the last time Van had seen him, only he seems to be breathing now. (Do ghosts breathe?)
Nicky isn't the first of the Yellowjackets that Van has encountered over the years. With the vision in their left eye dwindling, it has become almost second nature to see things out of the periphery of their gaze. Jackie is a common appearance. So is Laura Lee. Coach Ben. Melissa. Javi. The dead have followed them around for years, and Van has always believed it is because they are supposed to be part of that group, instead of among the living.

you squeeze your eyes shut, like you could blink the vision of you off like a TV.
when you don't just disappear, you curse under your breath, rubbing your eyes. you know yourself better, though you wish you didn't. you know yourself enough to know that you won't just up and leave your side: and how hard it is to shake the memory of you off.
it took a long time to win a home for this kid inside the better parts of yourself, in your video store — but they're trapped in the terror of your life, where they will deal their way out to bring you everywhere you've been since. the circular logic of this feels fucking nauseating. logically, this kid shouldn't know any of this yet. the hope in their eyes says they've got to. you look away from it.
(if this were a time travel movie, you two would have seriously fucked with events in the timeline even worse. if you could fuck with anything worse.)
"you again," you say to yourself when nobody but you is around to hear it. your mouth feels like static. "what're you that desperate for entertainment options?" it's disingenuous because you know the answer. attempting to ask what you need to hear, you stop short when you struggle with how to ask it, "where — ?"
are you, are we?
There is a smile on your face, flipped upside down from the expression on theirs. The curse rolls off your back like water from the lake, no offense taken even though they clearly don't want you around. That's never been their choice really.
When they have no one else, they still have you.
You perch on the edge of their bed, ragged pink converse tucked underneath your frame. It keeps you, quite literally, on your toes, rocking backwards and forward like you want to get closer, but you respect the distance.
Barely concealed awe is written all over your face, like you are beholding a marvel for the first time. The lines by their eyes, the faded scars, the undeniable evidence of a life lived. Your grin is lopsided and a little sad when you respond to them. "Dunno, you didn't take any weird shrooms again, right?"
But you feel the unspoken weight, a plot point you had familiarized to yourself a long time ago, amidst an endless forest of trees, like a premonition of what comes next. After all, how many movies have warned you about the concept of borrowed time? Still, you can see that it was much more time than you ever believed you were owed and for that, you are grateful. "I'm just here to help." To fulfill the role you have always been given, easing the harsh edges of reality until it can be swallowed.
bittersweet because i like the confirmation they're at least giving van something outside of taissa, but also hate that we had to wait this long for it and it comes after what happened in s3. also how are they going to fit everything in 8-10 eps?
Morgan smiles a toothy smile as the proprietor abandons all sense of propriety and shouts across the store. Their energy matches the same sort of overenthusiastic joking that she and her husband could manage at the arcade and in the privacy of their own home. She shakes her head. "No need to be sorry. It's not often my mind's endless reserve of useless trivia is cause for celebration."
At the mention of swap meets, she nods enthusiastically. "That would be great, but don't stress about it if not." Morgan has never been to one herself -- she used to hit up thrift stores which, in Southern California especially, could be little gold mines from the would-be rich and wannabe famous. But there has always been something both fascinating and melancholy about them to her, the idea of selling away things that no longer belong to your life -- whether death did them part, or time got long and interest got small. But there was joy in knowing someone else would bring it into their life, continue its story.
"Oh my gosh, I have, but it's been... forever minus however old I am," she says, gasping slightly as they hand her the tape. Morgan looks over the cover like it's something from a museum -- which the store sort of is, in the same way the arcade was -- and recalls, "Creature stole my Twinkie, right? Or, or, wait -- Wolfman's got nards! Wow, this is like reuniting with a friend I haven't seen since childhood."
Morgan's eyebrows raised in surprise and she chuckled again. "Oh, you were serious about that? Well, shoot. Can't go wrong with a Crunch bar, right?" She grabs the candy and puts it alongside the recommended tape, and then looks around at the shelves again and then leans in towards Van. "If it's not an abuse of my prize, I'd love to also ask you... out of all of these, what's one film you think I should watch? Not because of what I usually pick up, but because it's something you think is important viewing." She straightens back up a little.
"You'd be surprised what movies I haven't seen."
Morgan doesn't seem the type to judge Van for acting like a child, which is a relief in itself, but the redhead still tries to rein in some of their enthusiasm just in case. They were used to feeling like too much with other people, and while Van couldn't afford to lose customers either, it had also been a while since someone walked into their store already knowing some of the classics. Morgan had the sort of affable nature that felt comfortable to Van, a little dorky but earnest, and they didn't want to scare her off so soon.
"I'll keep it in mind," she reassures Morgan as she rounds back around the corner to ring her up. Her smile grows wider when Morgan is able to quote back one of the famous lines of the movie. "Damn, I'll have to step up my game next time," Van teases as she carefully bags the VHS tape and candy bar. However, Morgan delivers her challenge right then and there and Van has to pivot.
It's a question she has fielded many times before by customers. Most of them do want Van to predict what she thinks they would like, but she gets the sense that's not what Morgan is fishing for. "Something that's important viewing." Van could cheat and say the whole store. She had a firm belief that every movie was important in its own way, purely because someone was passionate enough about it to want to spend time and money and labor on creating their vision.
But Van decides to take a leap, deciding that the worst thing that could happen was that she makes the moment awkward. She disappears briefly into the back room before emerging with another tape in hand. "The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love." Van sets the movie down down gingerly on the counter between them, fingers trailing along the spine. Watching it now always made their heart ache, like a world where things had turned out right for them, but they keep the same steady smile on their face for Morgan.
"First movie I saw that had lesbians in love and they didn't have to suffer for it," Van explains simply with a shrug. "It's totally cheesy, and things have been getting better over the last few decades, but when I was in high school, I didn't think I'd have... any of this," they gesture around at the store with its visibly queer decorations and signage.

"Enough about me, let's talk about you for a minute." Yumi has never been comfortable being the focus of attention, and the very idea of being perceived makes her skin crawl. Call it a product of her upbringing or her culture, but she has always much preferred to be efficient from behind the scenes, in a way that no one sees coming.
Unfortunately, it turns out that when one is stranded in the middle of the forest for months on end with a group of teenage girls, they quickly run out of things to talk about. So she takes any opportunity she can to shift the attention off of her. Some of the others are open about sharing their personal lives, and it has served as a mostly surefire way to change the topic.
"You said you had brothers?"

"You're etched upon my mind." Lottie's voice is low and musical as she talks, like she's balancing on the edge of speaking and singing. The air of dissociation that floats around her has become semi-permanent over the months, and while at first it had been terrifying, there is something comforting about the way it blurs the edges of their circumstances. She has a vague sense of wrong and right, but with each day that passes, those notions slip away like dust in the wind.
Van is a steady presence next to her, fiery red hair like a blazing sun against the endless backdrop of snow. The connection she feels with the goalie is inexplicable, and Lottie simply knows that having Van look at her with hopeful blue eyes makes the ball of anxiety in her chest dissipate for a few moments. "All of you. All of this," she adds, gesturing over to the clearing where they hold their morning session. The power of the Wilderness seems dormant now, sleeping and sated, but Lottie knows that inevitably it will hunger for more. "They all think I'm crazy, but I'm not."

"You don't have to be so defensive." She uses the same voice that she often uses on new individuals who have come to her facility, even though Lottie is fairly sure that saying these words in this tone to Tai is futile. She's never known Tai to let her walls down, certainly not with her, and Lottie understands. While she has done a lot of work on herself to stifle many of the off-putting habits she had developed over the years as a result of her mental illness, it is always a bit different when she is faced with one of the women who had witnessed her in the freeing throes of madness. "I simply want to help."
The best way Lottie has ever known how to help people is by throwing an obscene amount of money at them. In her experience, it functioned better than nearly any apology. "I care about them too."
