serena joy in 2x09 “smart power”

okay here’s another… interesting.. episode for serena. serena is again forced to face the reality of the sacrifices she’s made in the name of Gilead as they taunt her with the life she was made to forget. watching her wistfully stare out the window of the car at the life she loved before leaving it behind for Gilead was sad but deserved. we can tell from previous episodes that she loved working and took a lot of pride in her well-spoken and educated abilities, and when she had to forsake every part of her that made her who she is, it’s not a surprise that she’s now this fragment of an individual. She’s handed papers with pictures instead of words when arriving in Canada, getting constant stares and disapproving looks by bystanders, and basically looking her old life in the eye with every step she takes. Its would almost feel like justice if something wasn’t missing.

When she meets the American government representative and he offers her what would make her life truly fulfilling and she turns it down because the Gilead “cause” is so deeply ingrained, I think you can see it slowly break her. She is deeply affected by the protests happening around her and the anger and hurt she’s helped to cause other REAL people being projected back onto her. However, fred feels nothing of the sort and she is again aware of her isolation. At the end of the episode when she throws the matches into the fire, I think her inner thoughts kind of parallel June’s at the beginning of the episode: accepting the reality of their “reduced circumstances” and neglecting any thought or hope of a way out. I think (for now at least) we’re not going to see Serena join the resistance or help June in any way, which is sad considering the progress the pair have made with each other. I still have hope for something like that to happen later, but I think Serena has recommitted herself to Fred and Gilead right now, especially in an effort to suppress her yearning for a “better life” or at least another way of life.

I think it would be interesting if they showed a commander and wife who didn’t rape the handmaids. If they treated them like humans and just blamed the infertility for the handmaid not getting pregnant. If outside the house they acted like everyone else but inside the house they didn’t believe in any of this shit either. I think that could be really interesting to see how they interacted with the Martha’s and handmaids if they really didn’t believe or think any of this was okay. I seriously doubt every single commander and wife believe in all of this.

And now Wonder Woman is being hailed as the movie that has “saved” the DC franchise.
