The mission of Women’s Global Empowerment Fund is to support women through economic, social and political programs, creating opportunities while addressing inequality; strengthening families and communities.

We’re absolutely over the moon to celebrate the opening of the Gulu Women’s Resource Center! This effort is many years in the making - thank you to everyone who made this dream a reality.

GWRC is a one-stop center that will provide essential support, information and education to women and girls in northern Uganda.

The goal of this initiative is to create a community space providing women current and critical information, community meeting space, and computer and life skill trainings. It is through information and education that self esteem and empowerment is facilitated, enabling women to stand up and lead themselves out of the vicious cycle of poverty that is often presented before them.

Access to Justice Initiative

WGEF’s Access to Justice Initiative seeks to address violence against women, gender bias, inequality and gaps in the justice chain for women, this initiative strives to provide the critical information and resources, enabling women to know their legal and human rights within the justice system.

This week, 10 women participated in a 2-day refresher training to discuss the issues they have faced and strategies to better address them. These challenges may include navigating the legal/justice system, domestic violence, and land rights.

Women in the program learn skills such as self-care, reporting, debate, and how to approach victims, in addition to methods for prevention.

Our Healthy Period Initiative is in full gear and girls have finished training in production now they have started producing final product, and already created a brand name LUCKY GIRL. We have worked on packaging using paper bags printed with the name of the product each pack to have 8 pieces of sanitary pads. For a full month we shall be testing with some clients before we take it out on the market in the villages.

2 years ago we were approached by producers of a romantic-comedy called THE WEDDING INVITATION. They were in pre-production on the film - a female-driven comedy about chasing love with a backbone theme of empowerment. They told us that they were donating a % of the film’s profits to 10 women’s charities and organizations and that we were one of the companies they’d selected.

The film is now complete. It was chosen to have its world premiere at the 21st Annual Palm Beach Film Festival  (4/9 & 4/12) and has been nominated for BEST FEATURE. It will then go on to screen at the Manhattan Film Festival (4/23).

It’s Raining Films (a female run company) has produced the film and is now launching their grass roots marketing campaign to get the word out.

WGEF Agro Loans: improving household income, food security and nutrition for women in Uganda

Our agricultural program continues to promote increased food security and increased household income that improves nutrition. More than 620 agro loans have been lent to women in Northern Uganda, women involved in agro business are improving livelihood, income and food security.

Beatrice 32, mother of 3, received a micro loan of $300 which she invested in her agro business planting maize together with her group member (13 in number). Together they have harvested 1 ton; all members in the group has enough to feed their families and are selling the rest to support the family needs. With small agro loans from WGEF, women are feeding the region!

WGEF is breaking the silence on menstrual health management for women and school-going girls in Northern Uganda.

Today we started to address this reality, training 15 young girls on how to produce affordable and safe sanitary pads for themselves and school going children, providing education and awareness creation real empowerment that benefit rural school going girls and women. Women and young girls are provided an opportunity to learn how to make, use and sell sanitary sanitary pads, creating employment opportunity while addressing menstrual health management challenge for rural women and schoolgirls.
