Finding Nemo - Nemo's first day of school when he meets some of the other students.
This short clip is from Finding Nemo, and it is about Nemo’s first day of school. When Nemo arrives at school, he is made fun of for having one shorter fin. However, it is shown that although some kids made fun of him, others rushed to his side and supported him, showing that they were not perfect, too. When most us first watched this movie as kids, we probably did not see the wide diversity of representations of disabilities (physical, mental, and cognitive). The directors, in my opinion, did a really good job portraying disabilities in this film because it was showed that: sure, there will be some people who make fun of those who seem different. However, we are all different in our own ways, and that’s what makes all of us unique.

Renegades by the X Ambassadors is a music video that features those with physical disabilities. From the very beginning to the the very end, it shows the struggles and emphasizes the accomplishments that those with physical disabilities have.
It’s a positive portrayal and representation because it truly emphasizes the accomplishments of people with physical disabilities. Rather than portraying that they face greater adversities than the able-bodied population, it shows that despite the hoops they have to jump through, they are able to jump through the hoops and do so quite successfully, too.
A negative aspect about the music video is that there is not much intersectionalism presented. Almost everyone featured in the video are seemingly white, cis-gendered, heterosexual males. There are a couple of representations of women, but it’s primarily dominated by men. More than one minority is not [clearly] depicted. This under represents the actual population and diversity within the disabled community.

Rion Paige auditioned for the X Factor in 2013 at the age of 13. She has a condition known as Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita.
I think that a really positive factor about her audition is that when she came out on stage, the judges did not really comment on her condition until Rion, herself, mentioned it. After the audition, everyone was simply “blown away” by what they just heard. When the judges gave their feedback, I think it is really important how they mentioned that she can be a huge inspiration to everyone in the room and how she was “literally” extraordinary.
I feel like many people are afraid to hurt someone’s feelings when they talk about something that makes that person different (ie: a physical disability). However, I believe that if the person (with the disability) feels comfortable talking about it, so should others because the struggles and obstacles that said person has faced are important in shaping them. Rion’s past experiences are what makes her a truly inspiring figure to those with or without disabilities but especially to those with physical disabilities because they have someone who they can directly relate to and have as a genuine role model.

This is Natasha. She is 16. She had her first debate in high school on abortion yesterday and won it 30-3. Natasha happens to have Spina Bifida. Her parents, and so many like them, were pressured to abort her because of “her quality of life & cost to society.”
Natasha won her debate because she spoke passionately from experience about what abortion steals from us.
Her mom says, “I think her quality of life looks pretty dang near perfect. She waterskis, snow skis, wheelchair races, runs 5ks, plays wheelchair basketball and a whole lot more.”
Thanks, Natasha, for showing us that our challenges don’t define us or destroy our lives! And congrats on your win!
