“You don’t have to call me princess,” she said reflexively, she cleared her throat, “actually, since we’re at school, you shouldn’t. We’re all here to learn and I’m no princess of learning,” she laughed at her own joke before falling quiet. “But um, things are going great. Thank you…classes are going great, the only thing that’s going not so great is this dress that I have to pick out. Decisions can be hard…”
Melissa waited through the girl’s response, bored in the formalities and the business nature of it all. Nodding her head along with Rampion’s words, she directed a halfhearted smile at the girl in response to her joke, before returning to her head nodding routine. That is, until the girl mentioned dresses. She couldn’t care less how the princess was settling in, but the blonde princess’ fashion choices were a much more exciting subject.
Moving around the girl, Melissa let her eyes wander over the dresses laid across the bed, before turning her attention back to the girl. “I could help. As prefect, I’m supposed to provide assistance. But I don’t think any of these options would work for a princess. You’d have to start over entirely.”
adorable-dory-crosby:
“Oh, well, uhh…” Dory looked around a bit, trying to get her bearings on where she was. And where she’d been going. Both were kind of fuzzy at the moment. “I think so,” Dory said. “I mean, I think this is the floor I need to be on, but only if I’m supposed to be going to charms class which I’m pretty sure is where I was headed…”
“Have you even looked at your schedule? Or maybe you have a copy of it on you?” Melissa was growing exasperated with the blonde, but also felt responsible for at least pointing her in the right direction. It would do her no good to have Dory trapped on the staircase again.
mersoldsoul:
“No. I’m not going to work on it. These are my cupcakes and I like them the way they are. You’re the one who seems to have an issue with it, so your’e the one who can make a change if you want it.”
Melissa let out a quiet tssk, shaking her head at the girl growing more and more angry in front of her. “It was just a suggestion, dear. No need to get so upset. Everyone can use some constructive criticism, you know.”

the-flower-or-the-serpant:
She stood at the foot of her bed, arms crossed humming thoughtfully as she studied the three dresses laid out on the bed. They were so different and yet she felt like any of them would work for her purposes. She was attending a dinner with her mother, a semi casual event she called it, which didn’t mean to her what it used to. A semi casual event she would have assumed was a slightly more dressed up than usual sort of look. She had to choose the dress that night, the dinner was the next day and she needed to send her mother a photo so that they could be sure they coordinated. Rozalie thought it was an enormous waste of effort until she had been corrected by her grandmother. Her grandmother said the family had to appear as united as possible. There was no room for error in that regard. Montsolei lacked an army of any kind or any sort of defences and so their soft power had to be utilized to the fullest.
She had left her door open just a little, she was the only one of her room mates currently in and so it was up to her how she handled the door. She preferred to leave doors open, she felt more at ease that way, less trapped and there were fewer surprises. She was surprised however to see out of the corner of her eye, that Melissa was standing in her doorway. Melissa Garner, the prefect, an upperclassman and someone altogether quite remarkable. “Oh, hello,” she said pleasantly with a smile. It was a friday and curfew wasn’t for another hour or so so she didn’t think she was doing anything wrong.
“Hello,” Melissa responded, taking the greeting from the blonde as an invitation to enter. Pushing the door open, she slid into the room, eyeing the girl as she did. Rozalie, or Rampion as they were now meant to call her, was an object of extreme interest to her. The girl had never done much to catch her eye before, with below average schoolwork and what Melissa thought to be subpar Quidditch ability, but now she was a princess. Or, at least, now everyone knew she was a princess. It didn’t take much more than that to catch Melissa’s interest, or her desire.
Closing the space between herself and the blonde, Melissa’s eyes roamed the room, taking it all in. She wanted the girl’s things... She wanted the girl’s life. But she had other things to focus on. For now. Clearing her throat, as she finished her survey of the space, Melissa began speaking, reciting the directions she had been given. “Professor Cattington asked me to check on you. He, along with the rest of the faculty and staff want to ensure that this school year has begun without issue. So, has it, Princess?”
“Whoa!” Dory exclaimed as she was quickly pulled along up the stairs. She tripped a bit at the start, but soon enough got her feet under her well enough that she easily kept up with the other girls as she hurried up the remainder of the staircase.
Melissa let out a sigh as she reached the top of the stairs. Finally, she could get the blonde girl out of her way. Coming to a stop, she let go of the hand before turning her attention to her companion. “You’ll be fine from here. Yes?” She did not need it to rest on her shoulders to guide Dory around.
Mer straightened and glared at the girl. “If they aren’t the best flavor, then nothing says you need to eat them. The house elves are still around here.” She would take a lot, but insulting her favorite kinds of cupcakes in front of her on her birthday, was not something she was in the mood to take.
“Oh, I know, I know.” Melissa responded, ignoring the girl’s obvious annoyance. “But the house elves lack a real, human touch, you know. It can be something you work on, maybe? It’d be good practice, at least, if you enjoy baking.” She offered a grin to go along with her sugarcoated words.
At the cheerful stranger’s voice, Mer jumped, turning around quickly. “Oh. Um. I suppose. The frosting hasn’t really set, but the cupcakes themselves are cool.” She didn’t actually want to share them with a stranger like this, but she had already told herself she was going to give the majority of them away. So there was no point in saying no. Even if she felt stiff and awkward.
“Thanks.” Melissa shot at the girl, with a grin. “Normally, I just try to get things from the house elves. But this works, too. It’s not the best flavor, but it’ll do.” Reaching out for a cupcake, Melissa grabbed for the one with the most frosting. She normally tried to avoid spoiling her sweet tooth so much, but it was the beginning of the new school year. She deserved the sugar after all of the classwork she had already begun doing.
“Oh!” Dory said, realizing she had kind of stopping in the middle of everything. With a giggle she smiled at the other girl again. “I guess I am kinda holding up traffic huh?” With another laugh, Dory took a couple of steps up the stairs before turning around and extending a hand to the other girl, remembering that she hadn’t exactly introduced herself to the stranger yet. “I’m Dory, by the way.”
“Just a bit.” Melissa agreed, her smile growing more strained by the minute. She very nearly let out a sigh of relief when the blonde started moving, but it the sensation that came with it would have been quashed just as fast as she had begun to feel it. The blonde stopped. Again. Nodding her head in response, Melissa took her hand quickly, shaking it. “And I’m Melissa. Now, let’s get you off these stairs.” She tried to take advantage of their handshake, and pull the girl along with the hand she had clasped around hers.
Dory re-adjusted the strap of her bag on her shoulder and smiled at the other girl. “There’s just so much to get used to again, you know? This place is so weird! But a good weird. A really good weird. It’s so wonderful. But it does make it kind of hard to remember all the things. Like the stairs moving, I completely forgot they did that.”
Melissa nodded along with the girl, trying to be as polite as she could. “Yes, yes, of course. You’re quite right. Speaking of moving things, perhaps you should get moving, yeah?”
Dory was walking up the stairs when, very suddenly, they shifted under her and she stumbled backward into the person behind her. “Whoa… oh…” she said, getting her feet back under herself enough to stand. “Sorry. Moving stairs… gotta get used to those again.”
Melissa held the girl’s weight as best she could for a moment, annoyance threatening to burst out of her as she tried to quash it. It would to her no good to ruin the reputation she had spent years creating at the beginning of her 7th year. “It’s, ah, no problem.” She ground out, pasting a fake smile on her face as she did. Looking down at her uniform, Melissa began brushing herself off where the girl had fallen against her before turning her attention back to the blonde. “Yes, you had best remember. Save yourself and those walking close to you some trouble later on.”
Mer hummed softly to herself as she began to decorate the cupcakes. She had baked them earlier in the day, but now her classes were done and she could finish these for herself. She didn’t expect to see anyone else on her birthday, so she made these entirely for her own pleasure. She would probably share them afterward, but the marbled chocolate and vanilla cupcakes were her favorite. She didn’t expect to see anyone else down in the kitchen, and so she was more relaxed than she had been in days.

Melly wandered into the kitchen, feeling a bit peckish after a long day of class. Letting her nose take in all the scents around her, she paused to weigh her options before a new scent wafted through the air towards her. Cupcakes, it smelled like. Prepared to wheedle one out of the house elves, much as she would with her own at home, Melissa set off in the direction of the scent.
As she neared the source of the delicious scent, Melissa paused in confusion. She was unaccustomed to running into other students when she snuck through the kitchens. Besides, it was going to make getting the cupcake much more difficult. Pasting a grin on her face, Melissa approached the girl. “Hello, there. You’re baking smells absolutely delightful. May I have one?”
