So I wanted to say that I never actually believed in confirmitygate, unfortunately. Even though I think it’s brilliant, and some clever writer really should use that idea because it would be historic and change audiovisual storytelling forever! You are that iconic. Genuinely better writers than the Duffers, for sure.
Anyway, I did believe in cutgate at first, but after the Duffers’ statements and comments from people who worked on the production saying that scenes weren’t cut. I started to doubt it about the original scripts being rejected. And even though the Duffers claim Netflix gives them full artistic freedom, I find it hard to believe they would leave the script for the very last minute to the point of filming random scenes without having a final ending ready.
To me, with the documentary, it becomes pretty clear that the Volume 2 script and the final episode was rewritten in a rush because the original version was rejected.
Things that support this theory:
• The WSQK hints making no sense at all in relation to the show.
• The merch that doesn’t make sense: “For Will” mixtape.
• Licensed songs that were never used (“Here Comes the Rain Again” I still talk about you 😭).
• The Volume 2 script constantly building tension with no real payoff.
• Foreshadowing that led nowhere: Will being marked with the “X” as if he were meant to be the bridge, and Mike staring at A Wrinkle in Time in the hospital with blue and yellow color coding plus a rainbow-colored puzzle.
Plus: I believe some of the details you all noticed were added by the art department as a kind of silent protest.
