The mangrove snake and Janus Sanders
I was bored. It’s not like I had to write something I promised months ago, anyway.
Yes yes I will talk about Orange, I swear.
So, while I was lurking around instead of doing my job, I found this post from Joan:
Uh, so Janus is based on a specific snake. Interesting, I’ve never heard of this one. What kind of snake is it, anyway?
So I did some research and this is the mangrove snake:
As soon as I saw it, the first thought that crossed my mind was “That's the quintessential of a snake”. There are something like 3000 species of snakes in the world, but if I have to pick the one that is the most “snake”, I would definitely choose the mangrove snake.
Then, it’s extremely elegant. I’ve never considered snakes “elegant”. Beautifully dangerous? Yes. Sinuous and deadly? Also. But not “elegant”. And not only this one is strikingly beautiful, but also very, very elegant.
And that’s when I realized that, oh, that’s why Joan & Thomas chose it for Janus: he’s basically how a mangrove snake would look like, if humanized.
I mean, just look at him:
Mangrove snake: black dorso, yellow bands and yellow belly. It’s basically what Janus wears: black outside, yellow inserts, yellow gloves and yellow inside (of the capelet).
And the eyes! Janus has a cat eye, because the mangrove snake’s eyes have slitted pupils like cats - that’s also the reason why the mangrove snake is also known as the "yellow-ringed cat snake".
And the more I searched, the more interesting things I learned. So here I am, spreading these crumbs of knowledge to you, to use them as you please.
You’re welcome.
_______________________________
1. A dangerous beast! Or maybe not.
The mangrove snake is a rear-fanged species. That means it doesn’t have two huge fangs like other snakes, but two little tiny fangs in the back of its mouth. Aww, how cute. And usually these tiny fangs are full of venom.
Awww, how cute.
Does that mean the mangrove snake is dangerous? Actually no. It seems dangerous, but it’s only mildly venomous. Its venom can cause pain, swelling and skin discoloration, but there has never been a confirmed human fatality.
So… it’s a snake that looks more dangerous than it actually is. An eeeevil snake, when it’s actually just a snake boy.

2. It’s not easy to deal with it
This snake is considered “potentially aggressive”. The captive ones are very nervous and even if some species may calm down and allow their owners to take them, the handling should be reduced to a minimum: the snakes can still get easily stressed and, if provoked, they won’t hesitate to strike or bite - even the owner themselves.
So, considering the snake’s nervous nature, the owner must be extremely careful in handling it.
Guys. Gals. Non-binary pals. It's exactly Janus.
He’s potentially aggressive: you do something wrong and he strikes back (just see how he reacted to Roman mocking him in POF). He’s not used to being handled by someone else (aka, to give control to someone else). And dealing with him won’t be a walk in the park - just like dealing with Virgil isn’t.

3. It eats frog and it’s already hilarious like this
The mangrove snake eats frogs. Yes, it also eats other small animals like lizards, fishes and especially birds (and their eggs)… but frogs.
But hey, we kinda saw it already? We saw him fighting Patton in POF, while he was in the Lilypadton form. Can we consider that a figurative fight between a snake and its prey?

4. It’s a mysterious boy
To my utter surprise, we actually don’t know a lot about the mangrove snake. We don’t know its threats. We don’t even know how many of them are in the world! If you see the conservation status chart (that shows which animals are risking extinction and which not), the mangrove snake is NE, not evaluated. Why? Because there aren’t enough studies about it.
That’s so freaking Janus. A mysterious boy full of secrets, who evades all ways for us to understand him. Is he good? Is he bad? What is he hiding? We might never know.

5. It’s a tall boy
Is Janus tall? Considering that all sides have the same height (Thomas’ height), this question makes no sense.
But hey, since someone might need this, the mangrove snake can reach 231 cm in length (7 ft 7 in). So yes, Janus should be pretty tall.

6. It says “stay hydrated”
Mangrove snakes like water. A lot. In nature, they live in humid places, so they always need water around - like a body of warm water in which they can soak in or just water to drink.
That means Janus enjoying bubble bath is valid and I’m extremely happy about that because nothing screams “self care” more than the snek enjoying some spa time.
_______________________________
7. No fear of heights
Mangrove snakes are nocturnal animals: they hunt, feed and breed at night. But they also spend most of their daylight hours basking on tree branches 30 meters (100 feet) or higher.
Just imagine the possibilities: the sides searching for him everywhere, while Janus is sunbathing on top of Thomas’ roof, not giving a single damn.

☀️ If you could spend a day with one of the sides, who would you choose and what would you do?
oooh, I had a dream about this once, (a couple actually) I’d pick Janus, and we’d do self care, like a spa day or something? and then we’d do crime >:3
No one on my dash is talking about this so I’m going to. Today and Tomorrow are the anniversary of Kristallnacht, the Night of Broken Glass. In 1938, less than a century ago, Nazis destroyed our homes and our synagogues. 100 jews were killed and 30,000 Jewish men; brothers, sons and fathers were arrested and taken to deadly concentration camps. Kristallnacht was when Nazi ideology became violent, and by 1945, six million people were dead. I never got to see the places my great grandparents grew up in because they had to run. They were the lucky ones.
Stop treating antisemitism as if it ended with World War II. There’s a reason synagogues have security and churches don’t. According to the JTA, there were 2,107 anti semitic incidents in America during 2019(more than they have seen in over 40 years) We are being shot and beaten and it happens everywhere. People don’t walk into Churches with a need to kill, they walk into synagogues.
and goyim don’t talk about it. because no one cares about us until we’re gone
I keep seeing people, especially older adults, claim that if you have “ADD”, you don’t have hyperactive symptoms or that you grow out of it, which is just not true.
“ADD” or ADHD-PI as its now called, just means you have much more inattentive symptoms than hyperactive (hence, PI: Predominantly Inattentive).
I like imagining ADHD as a spectrum, with PH on one side, PI on the other and C in the middle. For example, I’m diagnosed as PI but I still show hyperactive symptoms from time to time; I once threw a towel, down the stairs, at my sister’s friend because I was feeling quite hyper.
Hyperactive symptoms don’t have to be physical, they can be mental too, like racing thoughts.
I’ve been diagnosed with ADHD-PI recently and I don’t experience physical hyperactivity at all. But in my head it is quite busy indeed. I talked to my roommate the other day and she said she sometimes doesn’t have any thought at all. Like I didn’t know that was possible. Mean well there isn’t a moment I’m not thinking about at least five things at the same time.
The constant buzzing of thoughts is the reason we need background music/noise to concentrate.. to drown out the buzz. I can’t study in a library because its too quiet.. and my in contrast my thoughts are too loud.
Talking a lot is a hyperactive symptom, the leg bounce is hyperactivity, feeling restless is a hyperactive symptom. How often do PI types exhibit symptoms like this? Every day for hours on end.
The idea that someone isn’t hyperactive because their hyperactivity isn’t loud and in your face to strangers is a problem.
And ADHD is lifelong. During each life stage, or even day to day, different things effect us and we learn new coping mechanisms as we go along (good or bad) so the disorder can display really differently in one single ADHDer. It’s all still ADHD and it’s all a challenge.
Also, physical hyperactivity symptoms in kids often get internalized as they get older. So they might seem to “grow out of it,” but really their brain has just matured just enough that they can be okay bouncing their leg instead of climbing on the furniture, or that they can usually control the constant impulse to interrupt people but it’s still there and something they’re very aware of and have to consciously hold back.
I do not appear to be anywhere even close to hyperactive. I was inactive as a kid, I’m inactive as an adult. Yet I have four of the required six hyperactive/impulsive symptoms.

“Potterheads read a different book” challenge
maybe making consuming pop culture a huge part of your identity was never a good idea to begin with
I read that article. The article was thoughtful and good and ends with a plea to donate to transgender causes. Also people can be obsessed about any number of things. Sometimes it’s because they have ADHD or autism, but sometimes they don’t. And consuming pop culture forms both personal and cultural identity? There are people that form large parts of their identity around sports teams, or making movie-perfect stormtrooper armor. This behavior is normal and you can’t just call it pathetic because it’s something you personally don’t like, especially when the person in question understands the nuances of it and its problems. I am a transgender person for who Harry Potter was a big part of my identity and I am here to say that the cis person who wrote this article knows their place and knows where they are in all of this and understands that there are no easy answers to any of this.
smug ableist are once again mocking neurodivergent people for our hyperfixations, what else is new
Yeah but also don’t make fun of neurotypical people for having interests either. My grandma is as neurotypical as they come and she knows a lot about and is super into the sitcom Hogan’s Heroes. Human beings have interests. Human beings have interests that they incorporate into their personal identities.
