Extra curricular activites
Did you know that teachers give up their after school and weekend time to give their students more opportunities? Today, my coteacher and I are at a local high school, having driven students using her car and gas, and having made lunches for them with groceries I purchased, so that the students can compete in Science Olympiad. Keep in mind that we work for a Title One school and that the programs we have regularly provide the students with a majority of the food they will receive during the day. We still pay out of pocket for the betterment of our students.
Public school teachers regularly give up their evenings and their weekends to support their students. We’re here doing engineering for MESA competition. Happy Saturday!

SpEd teachers are amazing, but they are underfunded and under-resourced. This is one SpEd teacher's story:
When you teach students with intellectual disabilities the resources available to teach them about subjects such as mitosis and the civil war era are very limited. Due to budget cuts, the two most valuable resources I have were not funded. I requested funding and was not at all surprised when I was told we have literally $0 in our budget. So I went to the SpEd team leader who miraculously found me funds last year. He gave some suggestions of other resources but said that if I didn't think they would work he would "cover" the renewal fees. What I found out today was he meant he literally would pay for it out of his own pocket. I didn't know he did this last year as well. These programs in no way help the students he serves but he cares so much that he will spend his own money so my kids get what they need. THIS is what public school teachers do. Go above and beyond to make sure ALL of the kids are taken care of. If I had known he had spent his own money I never would have asked. What an amazing colleague I have.

Did you know that public school teachers work, on average, 13 hours over overtime each week? This work is done for free. It's not part of contract hours, nor is it compensated. These hours go to tutoring, grading, running clubs, analyzing student data, planning lessons, creating lessons, classroom organization, making posters and learning materials for the classroom, outside trainings, homework help, intervention for at-risk students, and others!
Did you know that the Title 1 school program operates in a preemptive way? It targets at risk kids who are in danger of failing, or who might not make it through the whole system and affords them extra resources to get the education they need to become proactive, amazing members of society. Everyone deserves the chance to learn, no matter their background or socio-economic status!
Did you know that art is a great way for kids to process the information that they’re learning?
Not all kids are able to organize a lot of words into a coherent and manageable set of notes. Providing art in classrooms allows more visual and kinesthetic learners to grapple with information that would usually be confusing and difficult to interpret!

Did you know that public schools have programs that provided meals to children living in poverty for free? Even on weekends and breaks! Title 1 money allows schools who service low income families to provide meals for the students so that they get the nutrition they need to learn and be healthy. No child should have to be hungry!
Did you know that public schools offer enrichment programs? These programs often supplement curriculum that happens inside the classroom and allow students to explore different areas of study! STEM programs are the most common, as science and engineering classes are severely lacking and underfunded due to the focus on Math and ELA testing. Programs like Science Olympiad and MESA give students hands on experience and let them get creative! Competitions get them invested and show them ideas that come from other schools.
