Admittedly a bit late to the party on this one bc midterms fucked me up, but I’m a pretty firm believer in the idea that allowing people the opportunity to grow/change and wanting them to get better ≠ forgiveness. Wasn’t a fan of doomersis’s apology, and I sure as hell am not ready to forgive her in any capacity for the things she said, but detaching myself from all my own grievances, I do hope she improves as a person and want her to have a fair chance at doing so

I have a good-faith question, that I don't know who else to ask, I'm sorry.

When transfeminist people say that trans men / transmascs have to 'recognize that they have male privilege / are less oppressed than trans women / transfems' what's the intended end result? Like, as a trans man I want to respect that I have privilege- but I don't understand what I'm supposed to do?

Is it genuinely just a situation where I'm expected to add a disclaimer to every discussion that trans women have it worse? It doesn't seem so, but I can't get a clearer answer from the people I've reached out to.

I also don't know what the privilege is, either. Whenever I've asked I get either no response or a nasty response about how man=privilege and I should know that. But there's no transmascs in my local politics, there's no transmascs in any leadership positions (or any positions at all) in my local pride group, there's no transmascs in my local drag scene-- it's not like me or any other local transmascs hold any power or are restricting anything purposefully. I don't pass, and I haven't met a cis person who's gendered me correctly first try. I'm surrounded on all sides by women who are quick to remind me of my trans male privilege while refusing to explain to me what it is because I should already know, and if I can't keep up I should just let the adults do the talking. I'm desperate to understand, I love my trans sisters and want to do right but I can't do it in ignorance.

Sorry if this is too drama centric, or if you don't want to answer. I saw that you communicate in good faith with the kind of people that have given me the coldest shoulder before, so I wondered if you might know why/what I'm supposed to do. Thank you for your time.

This is actually really simple, don't do anything because you don't have any gendered privilege. Eject the idea from your mind entirely, it's bullshit. Complete nonsense. Trans men need to stop giving transphobes the luxury of argument. Enough is enough. We don't need to defend our existence or explain how we do in fact experience transphobia, just call them out for being bigoted and move on. A logical defense has already been made, transphobes don't care and never will. People saying "trans men need to acknowledge their male privelege" are not arguing in good faith. Nobody who says "(marginalized group) needs to acknowledge how they're actually bad" is arguing in good faith. It's just being used to shut us down and justify attacking us. Don't give it the time of day. Stop being nice. They're transphobic, and at best conditionally accepting of only a subset of trans women, which is still transphobic.

You don't need to defend your existence to bigots.
